€2...seriously?? some of you wont tip €2?? im in recession as much as the next person but if i can afford a take-away in the first place then i can tip a couple of euro

but why do they need to be tipped?
Every €2 counts I'm afraid. The last couple of times I ordered a takeaway for delivery (prob nearly a year ago at this stage) I was scrapping the coppers together to pay for it, so no chance of a tip I'm afraid. I clearly had an insatiable craving for pizza at that moment in time.

Usually just let him have the change, once it's not anything ridiculous.
But if there is a delivery charge then they're not getting ****.

Actually yeah, now that you mention it, I see a remarkable number of tip jars in places where I shouldn't see them.

Does anybody else sometimes feel pressured into tipping so as not to look like a cheap **** infront of others?

    You don't tip the hairdresser.
You tip the apprentice, the person who spends years training on ****e money.

You know, the girl who washes your hair and get minimum wage while the hairdresser charges you over €60.

They deserve tips more then taximen or fast food drivers or barmen or your waitress. None of them spend years training at their craft to qualify

Well in fairness hair dressing is a skill and a lot of the hairdressers would be on an apprentice wage. Also hairdressers don't leave a cup beside the till, as far as i am aware anyway!

And what's up with you spending €100 on a haircut anyway ?

Nah... lots of people tip the hairdresser not the apprenctices. Besides a lot of people have to work for years on minimum wage and don't get tips.

I dont have a food delivery driver because I am not in a wheelchair. Even if I were ordering fast food, I think I would go out and get it myself.

Sitting at home while someone deepfries you up a load of grease with some overcooked meat on it, then comes to your front door with it, is a bit too Lou & Andy for me.

ugh...I hate this argument of if you can afford such and such then you must be able to afford a tip. No- people work off budgets, they generally don't have an endless supply of money to be dishing out to whoever washed their hair, drove their pizza 2 mins down the road or handed them a cup of coffee. This attitude that if people have paid a certain amount of money for something then they should be willing to pay even more money for it doesn't fly with me at all. Anger.

I just started doing deliveries around 2 months ago and was amazed at the amount of people who dont tip because I always did!

Now I get paid 5 euro an hour and the delivery charge on each delivery which is 2 euro and Ive never done more than 8 deliveries in a night,

So I get about 30-36 euro for the night, which is 5 hours work. Below minimum wage.

I would be delighted to get a euro tip! Scabby feckers who dont tip, and im not just saying that as a drive because I always did it! And the worst is that I have to call half the fukkers on my own mobile so I can get into their **** apartments etc!

Not that im bitter or anything...

Why agree to work under minimum wage? Insist on what you're due.

Sure you've extra expense like declaring it to your insurance company if it's your own car

Ok, what I'll say is this.
Never tip the hairdresser. As you say you're paying €100.
If you do wish to tip, then give it to the apprentice.

The same way you don't tip a hotel manager, you do it to the serving staff

I think you missed the point where the argument wasn't about who to tip in the hairdressers so much as whether to tip in the hairdressers. I think you just wanted to make your witty comparison between tipping a hairdresser and tipping a hotel manager. well done.

If its 20 quid and they are pleasant with me I tip 2Euro

If its 17.65 and they are ages searching for change and jaysus with the heartache of looking for coins - because for gods sake what would they have coins for?... they get nought. And they are always fine and snotty about it which I really Love

I used to always tip the drivers around €2-€3, but one time I miss-counted the amount I owed, but when the driver called back and made a fuss over it I won't be tipping again!

I really admire this attitude. This is the attitude of the energetic worker who knows how to get ahead, remain competitive, and still derive a personal financial profit. Even if it means undercutting your fellow worker - that is business, that is how labour comptetition works.

    This, on the other hand...

I usually just round it off. Say its 15.40 ... give 16. If its say 15.80, give 16.50.

I hate all this tipping bollocks. Im not a tight git. In this case I would have already bought the food. Your man is making a wage out of it (delivery charge / flat rate) .. why should i be deemed as "tight" if I dont get him an extra 2 euro?

You dont tip the guy working in mcdonalds as he hands your food.

well I wouldn't say anyone is tight, because it is up to the individual person whether they want to tip or not which is perfectly fine, but everyone is different and I choose to tip, not because I feel it nesessary but because I choose to do so.

I am the same. I choose to tip.
Some drivers look at you tho, if its 15.40 and you give 16 euro... like i'm scabby. Other drivers are fine. But theres always that percentage that want 2 euro off you (etc) and anything less is scabby.

But its all just about what side of the coin you're on. Lets say Joe Scabby starts a delivery job tomorrow. While he wouldnt tip any of his takeway deliveries before, he wants big tips from other people now that he is doing it.

Only if its hot and fast delivery.
+1 on what zenno and lighterguy said. It is a personal choice to tip. For every delivery I do I don't expect to get a tip but it is nice to get one. I always say have a nice day / enjoy the food etc or if the customer wants the food brought in I will do it whether they are a "tipper" or not. I always give the best service I can.

But it comes down to there will always be some people who are willing to spend an extra euro or two in the hope of getting better service. If I get a chance to provide preference to one customer over another it will always go towards the known tipper. ALWAYS! This can be anyhting from an extra drink/dips/sauces to entire extra pizzas or just which customer gets their order first!

Nobody is saying you have to tip but if you do it usually pays off! And that is from both a delivery driver point of view and a take away customer.

When doing deliveries there is a lot more than just the wage to consider. one of the big things is the workplace atmosphere. I much rather work for slightly under min wage but in a take away with good management than work in a hell hole working with absolute di**heads just to get min wage. I know one guy who was fired from a place only a couple a weeks ago because he got a flat tyre while on a delivery!

And also +1 to no quarter for his attitude to work. This country could really do with a few more like him/her

Delivery drivers possibly aren't earning what the guy behind the counter at mcdonalds is though.
They usually get a flat rate which is well below minimum wage and then a small fee for each delivery,
a euro or two, depending on where you order from.

Factor in the price of petrol these days (currently €1.52 per litre where I live) and it's hardly a feckin goldmine.
It's a fairly shít way to make a living really, probably better off on the dole.

You do have the odd good week but most weeks you would work out better on the dole. I am a fit healthy man in my 20's willing and able to work. Its a personal decision for me to not go on the dole as I would rather earn my own way even if it does mean working for less than min wage. Before anybody says it I do not hold anything against anyone on the dole. I understand it is a very necessary support system that is there for a reason. Just to be clear it is a personal decision that I do not want to be on the dole.

Hrmm, lets see, I wake up in the morning and bury my head into a law book for about 8 hours before I get up and go to work in the evenings, to earn about 35 euro and spend about 10 between petrol and call costs. Luckily, as you say, I get to sit on my arse between deliveries, that thankfully gives me more time to study, because seeing as I have to pay 13,000 euro this year for my second degree to become a Barrister, I need to study as hard as possible to pass the entrance exams.

So I would hardly call myself "fcuking lazy scum". You, sir, on the other hand are a fcuking moron so shove your 2.1 in product design up your hole haha! :)

    No - Never - I can't afford it
If it takes more than 45mins then I wouldnt tip but the majority of times it is within that so about €2.

Sometimes people dont know how to put a lid on a container and when they hand the bag the food has leaked right thru it - in that case they get nada.

In fact I have refused to accept the food on a couple of occasions when the container was literally swimming in the bag.
