Hard Drive recovery can be quite costly - Mcs on Parnell St. do it, but Check and see if they will drop the price if you supply the HD - besides that you can try getting recovery software and do it yourself; I'll check and see what free software I can find and I'll send it to you.

    Hi

I've been through this many times. First off - disconnect the drive as soon as possible, if there is physical damage you will make it worse by keeping it on.

With any luck it's just the motor gone for the read/write head, in that case the platter is fine and all your information will be intact.

I'd send it to a specialist either way - well, depending on how vital the data is to you, going at it yourself can do wreck, and also you may need to get the read/write head or motor replaced - that has to be done in a cleanroom environment.

There are a good few places doing this but I've used a crowd in the UK - http://www.dataphoenix.co.uk who managed to get stuff back for me, the reason I went with them is they'll examine it at no cost, if they can get stuff back they charge you but if they can't it won't cost you anything.

I've heard good things about criticaldata.ie as well but they do charge you 50 quid to look at it.

I went through that last year - thought I'd lost all my photos that I keep on the drive. Turns out that all it needed was a new case. PC told me that all was lost and nothing they could do, best throw it in the bin.... Curry's actually had a case, but wouldn't touch the disc. I brought it to a friend (computer savvy) and he replaced the case. Eh voila - all working normally again. TG:D

if your any small bit techie, try this first, will save you money
download a free copy of ubuntu, burn it to disc

power down pc, boot up the ubuntu disc, let it run LIVE you dont need to install anything

you'll be able access your folders if they arent protected, stick in a usb drive and drag them over...walla magic

Perhaps you're attempting to load an incompatible fat16 or 32 drive on Win 7? If the drive is physically intact it’s likely a format or OS issue. Do a Google on FAT and NTFS so you know where you’re at.

Harddrive recovery can be expensive. If done cheaply, and they f**k up, they can claim data corruption, and you'll never get your files. If done properly, it may be costly.

Or do it yourself. Grab the demo below, and it'll allow you to run it to see can you see the files. If you can, maybe buy the program, and get the files back?

If the files were recovered, but lacked the directory table, try running the demo of O&O Data Recovery to see if it can find the files. I have found this program to be very good at finding files after the directory table got wiped (accidently formatted the disk, and reinstalled windows to it).

Got mine done in MCS a week or so ago, the harddrive was fried. Cost 180 including deposit.

it's an old machine, the message i was getting was
    starting windows 98..
you are using automatically generated config files.
your original config files have been resaved
config and autoexec and are locatedin the c: "something" directory

this pc was n't started in a few years but had a lot of family photos.

i'll have a look at the options and might try myself first. i did get a usb connector and hooked it up, could hear it spinning but no joy accessing the data
