just got this from peat's the other day. reasonably happy with its performance and versatility.

i had a couple questions that i wasn't able to answer with either the included (1-page) manual or the 'complete' manual which i downloaded from iomega's site.

i've found very few-to-zero results through google regarding the questions, and after spending 30 minutes on iomega's 1-on-1 real-time chat support the support 'tech' eventually admitted "to be honest, i have no idea. i'll pass your query on to my supervisor and they will get back to you shortly." no email yet, but it's the weekend.

at any rate, if anyone else has figured these things out, i'd love their insight!

    1) subtitles. i tested an .iso of a dvd with subtitles turned on. worked exactly as expected. then i tried an .mkv with embedded subs and a few different .avi files with the relevant .sub or .srt files named exactly the same as the movie (e.g. My Film.avi and My Film.sub, both in the same directory and folder). i could not for the life of me get any subs to show up with either the .mkv files or the .avi files. the online tech tried to help by asking me to make sure i had Subtitles turned ON in the options menu. of course i tried everything i could think of. under options menu the subs toggle between Off and Sub 1 (or, in the case of the .mkv files, Off / Sub 1 / Sub 2). i know that when using VLC or GOM player sometimes it takes a few pieces of dialogue for recently activated subs to start showing up. i let each option run for about a minute, just to check. still: nothing.

    2) within the native gui i can browse through the library of films either by Cover, Thumbnail, or Preview (if i remember correctly). the Preview option does indeed begin each film in a little preview window on the left as the cursor moves to a selected title. but for Cover and Thumbnail view, how does one apply thumbnail images to a movie file? i know that, for instance, in windows XP, if you want to associate an image with a folder you have to leave a file called folder.jpg within the folder you wish to affect, and then in Thumbnail view this image will fill up most of the folder icon. is there some similar trick with the MX?

anyone who has similar issues or has figured out what works, please feel free to respond.

    thanks for reading!

    I have the DX version.
It seemed an interesting piece of kit, i suppose it is in it's own peculiar way.
I haven't reached the heights that you have, but a trial run with a rental movie from iTunes ended sadly, wrong file type.
    All iTunes movies are apparently.
Rather than me running out and buying Apple TV, I wonder if you could suggest sites with a range and a standard equivalent to iTunes, ie not wall to wall porn and a Trojan lurking under every hyperlink?
    Thanks,

    ?
    Thanks,

In fairness, all Itunes movies are protected by Digital Rights Management (DRM) and Apple are notorious for only allowing their own products play DRM content (Microsoft seem less reluctant to allow other companies hardware play their DRM content). DRM sucks anyways, buy the movie and rip it to avi yourself ;)

    Hi folks,

Any way to network enable this device? I bought one for the girlfriend as I already had the Screenplay HD Pro but then only realised the blinking thing didn't have an ethernet port.

I have seen some devices on fleabay that seem to allow to share your usb device over the home network so wondering if one of these would work with the Screenplay MX?

    Cheers,
