To my absolute horror today when walking down Shop street I saw that an adult shop had opened up. Shop street is the jewel of Galway city and I am extremely disappointed that the city council have allowed this to happen. Also I saw that in my opinion a few very tacky looking shops have opened up in shop street. Surely the integrity of this street should be maintained?

Haven't seen it. Perhaps a sign of the times, although I'm surprised one didn't appear during the height of the boom period to be honest. Ann Summers has a spot on O'Connell Street in Dublin if that's any comparison. Suppose if there is a market there for it, every business creates a few jobs.
It wouldn't bother me too much.

To be honest there's very little that the city council can do about it.I'm baffled as to why you think it ruins the integrity of the street though? For years Ann Summers have had a large store in the middle of O'connell st in Dublin, and although it hasn't added any "integrity" to the street, it certainly hasn't done any harm either.

Shop street is equal to Dublins Grafton street and my opinion the standard should be highly maintained. Leave the sex shops for the back alleys.

Is it affecting you in any way what so ever.No.So why do you care about it?.

Ann summers is a high class establishment. Shop street is Galways main shopping thorough fair.It should be high class and not ruined by bright pink adult shops. Surely the city council could do something about, The new business would have to pay rates etc. This is my opinion.

They have been making their way out of the back alleys and into mainstream business districts for the past 10 odd years at this stage!:)
If there is enough of a market it will stay open and if not, it will eventually close down, just like any other business.

Yes I do care about it, I would like tourists to country and my children to walk down the jewel of Galway city without seeing shops that sell mechanical sex devices, hard core pornographic audio and visual and Nurses uniforms that any real nurse would catch puenomia in.

What makes Ann Summers more "high class" than any of the other sex shops?Branding?
Personally,I'd rather encounter a sex shop while I stroll down Grafton St than being heckled by the many junkies that seem to have made the street home. The reason why a sex shop hasn't popped up on Grafton St yet is probably due to the rent, not Dublin City Council trying to maintain the street's integrity.

Look ten years down the road and imagine what shop street will be like given the current calibre of shops opening. Moore street in Dublin will be comparable. With head shops, hair extensions in every second door.

I'd be happier if a sex shop moved into Taaffe's rather than the way it is now.

I have to say that I agree with the OP on this one. I think it's a terrible pity that no effort is made to make Galway's main Street a bit less homogenous and a little more sophisticated than it is at the moment.Right now Shop Street looks like a tacky back street in any dingy town in Ireland or the UK. It has no charm and no unique vibe at all.I can't see what attraction it could hold for visitors.A sex shop plonked in the middle will only detract from it. The truth is that in terms of bolstering the local economy, tourism creates a whole lot more jobs than a singular sex shop ever will. A little forethought about what we want out of a city centre, what kind of city centre might most benefit us, and some planning to create that would not go a miss.

Most sex shops are terribly tacky and Shop Street should be child-friendly.

I think sex shops are best suited to business zones like Lisbaun Industrial Estate, or the new business district beside B&Q, where adults work, or a discreet area at the back of a chemist shop, etc.

Ann Somers (sp?) does contain tasteful lingerie and products, unlike most sex shops which can contain rather disturbing gear, like sinister looking black leather gear/whips, etc.

I am not against sex shops: but everything has its place and I agree with the OP that Shop Street is not the place for them.

    LOL.

    Welcome to the 21st century.

Thankfully people have moved on from the backward place Ireland used to be.

Leave aside the sex shop for the moment. How about the other shops that have opened up in the recent past? do you like tourists pointing out and talking about large Liquidation sale signs? how about the other calibre up jobs are they befitting of the area?

You should contact loudmouth Cllr. Conneely OP, he's been campaigning about the filthy immoral sex cinema located on an industrial estate in town. I'm sure he'll be outraged at this development.

The shop is on the 2nd floor of a building, you can barely notice it if you were just looking into shops, you have to look up to notice it and a lot of people dont do that when shopping. I walked along Shop Street one day looking up for a change to see how many business's i was missing.

    There was a lot.

Ireland is moving forward and people arent so shy about sex any more.

Anyhow you cant see into the shop so kids wont even know that its there.

Live and let live. Someones started a new business and no doubt is trying really hard to make a go of it. Anyone with the stones to do that these days should be given a big clap on the back, not be moaned about.

So its not to your taste? That doesnt mean it should be shoved out of the way, and there is a market for it. As said by another poster its upstairs out of the way, and although its bright pink its not "in your face".

It would be worse if the shop was lying empty like so many retail units up and down the country today. Fair play to them i say
