    This is a Galway issue.

    what?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,785 ✭✭✭James Forde

There is a wider issue here. Galway relies heavily on tourism. If it continues along its current level of tackiness it could end up like Bundorran.

erm, I thought it was more along the lines of a hens/stags kind of place.

Which if you haven't noticed Galway also relies heavily on too

Edit: Any Business person willing to pay the extortionate rent for a premises on Shop should be applauded

Well how about you expand on the point of it being a Galway issue?

someone said sarcastically that the hotels would be empty because of a sex shop, and you replied "this is a galway issue"... I fail to see the logic in your retort?

Truthfully, the word 'sex' never appears outside the building or on any signs. So it's harmless from that sense. You could look at it and have no idea of what it actually was (unless you were a dirty minded hoor like all of us here)

I only saw for the first time when I was coming down from Edward Square a week ago. If you're just walking up and down Shop Street, you wouldn't even bleedin' notice.

It's marketing itself as a business specialising in Hen/Stag night paraphernalia. Galway is rather popular for Hens and Stags and this whole blather about tourism and whatnot, sure isn't 23 lads or lassies landing into Galway for the weekend to go on the auld piss as good a cash boost as a small troupe of tourists wandering about buying shillelaghs?

I understand people's dislike of sex shops, but honest to Christ you're in Galway. 'Liberal' is practically the motto of our town.

This is the kinda stuff you hear about on Joe Duffy, and I'd suggest anyone that really is genuinely outraged at this shop to call him, cause maybe he'll entertain your shíte.

It's good to see someone creating jobs in Galway, they could be selling meth for all I care as long as they take some of the people off the dole queue.

The owner has already said he'll repaint if people complain. His marketing drive has worked though, 5 pages already.

I will be making a call to the Joe Duffy show about this on Tuesday.

...And there are no tacky shops in any town or City other than Galway? Good one.

I'm starting to think the only reason you have an issue with it being in such a public place is because you don't like being seen in it. Otherwise, you'd have no problem with it, as you actually have to go out of your way to see it.

If it was on a street other then Shop street and around Eyre square I would not mind. These are the main areas in which tourists etc gather.

On the front page of the tribune on friday

but why did you reply that to the poster?? TBH its the "issue" bit I'd almost have more trouble with, this really is a non-issue.

Leave the sex shops for the back alleys.

    Good old sexually repressed Ireland.
If nobody buys anything there, it will close down.
    If they do, it won't.

yeah Keith Finnegan enjoys a pro church, wholesome debate most days, im sure he would be appaled at this tremendous blight on Galways map.

    Lmao.

The shop is not selling anything illegal. The shop owner is entitled to operate their business anywhere they feel like once they comply with the law. I can only assume that they are paying their rent and paying Galway City Council their rates. The good people of Galway are clearly purchasing items from this shop and making it a viable business. If you have an issue with the shop do not purchase anything from them.

It is your opinion that the shop is tacky. The shop is a retail outlet and whether your sensabilities are offended or not is irrelevant.

I'm sure Joe will give you a hearing on Tuesday. He likes a bit of hysteria.

I think he's commenting on your username "Business start up". For all we know, you could be the sex shop business "starter upper" and this could be a sly way to generate interest in the start up of your new business.

About tourists, what ones are you talking about in particular? I'm sure they have sex shops wherever they come from.

EDIT: Actually no, he's just commenting on your spelling.

Don't see the problem with the shop operating once it's frontage isn't offensive nor easy for minors to gain access.
