Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Saorview: Simple Improvements

There are two very simple improvements that could improve Saorview at no additional cost.

    1. From the sample Multiplex Setup, 0.6 Mbps is assigned for ‘EBU Teletext’ on RTÉ One and TV3. Digital Aertel is available on every MHEG-5 Saorview approved receiver/IDTV, so the ‘old style teletext’ on RTÉ One is a waste of space, while TV3’s text service is now merely a place-holder, which directs people to their website, and 3e’s text ‘service’ isn’t too far behind. Why not remove these and distribute the available bitrate to all channels, especially RTÉjr/RTÉ One +1, whose picture quality is barely a step above the old temporary RTÉ Two SD service?

    2. Is there a need for SD channels to broadcast at a resolution of 544*576? BBC One on Freeview is at 720*576 with a comparable bitrate (in MPEG2 terms) to SD Saorview channels. This seems like an unnecessary loss of resolution for what seems like an adequately assigned bitrate. Why not increase SD channels to ‘Full SD’ at 720/704*576?

    Any other ideas?

With Cable TV systems using Saorview as a source for any or all of RTE/TV3/TG4/3e- it would mean a loss of teletext for viewers.

Likewise with hotel systems etc that might use modulators to feed dozens of non-MPEG4 TVs - they would all lose teletext.

Opportunity for RTE News Now - how about feeding an hour of Euronews instead of repeating 6 and 9 o'clock news at 7 and 10 o'clock as these are being shown on RTE1+1 ??

I know this might be a bit novel for RTE but why don't they 'BROADCAST IN FECKING HD'

Addition of local 3-4 regional TV stations based in universities/IT's - opportunity for Media Studies / Engineering students to develop skills / showcase talents ?

Make the on screen DOG's smaller and more discreet. They are flipping huge when compared to UK TV stations.

RTE have already said their EBU text is likely to go off air at ASO in 2012.

What are you talking about. You already got 4 hours of HD 10 days ago. Do you think RTE are made of money. Jeez.
