    Dublin Marathon Report

This run was about getting my confidence back for 26.2 miles and setting the record straight for my Mum. Thursday before marathon last year we discovered my mum had brain cancer and died 2 weeks later. I still ran the marathon but dropped out at half way.

I did a 12 week plan from p&d with 3:45 a target, suffered a sprain ankle and few other minor things. But i was going to do this no matter what.

Slipped in about 1 min behind the 3:45 pacers and waited for the gun. Off we went and first few miles went by easily. Got stuck behind the 3:45 paces on North Circular, a bit of mayhem there with the crowd. Got by them before first water station and then i had plenty of space.

Got to the 5 mile mark feeling great, this is where it went pear shape last year. I knew from here it be a good day and the miles kept ticking on by.

Got to half way and saw my 2 year old daughter, she was more interested in other runners than her daddy :) At this stage i was 2 mins up on my time for a 3:39.

Got to 15 miles and had alot of pain in my ankle so took a pill, nearly choked on it:). When i got to mile 20 i was a min up on 3:39.

Clonskeagh hill hurt alot and i lost the 3:40 time there. Was 30 secs down on 3:39. Now i knew it was a test for me and i just worked on 1 mile at a time. Roebuck hill came and went, doesn't bother me much as i know there is a downhill after it.

Got to Nutley Lane and crowds were great and worked my way home. Pearse St was too narrow for the runners, you needed to go out into traffic to overtake.

I kept listening out for the crowd for the 3:45 group but never heard them, but it kept me pushing. Got to finish line in 3:42:56.

A great day out and great crowd. Thought of my mum during the run the whole way and know she brought us home.

Went to McGrattins pub but didn't see anyone there so headed off.

Plan is now to take it easy with recovery runs till xmas and getting ready for the new baby in December. New York Marathon next year for us.

Thanks for the reading the log

Aye, looking at times over the distance we werent far apart until mile 21, then u pulled away and i probably gained a bit on the last 2 miles.

Really enjoyed the race though. Any plans for the next 6 months?

    Monday

Decided to step recovery up a bit this week, 4 x 5 miles runs this week.

Todays session was with a bit of pace, wanted to do a sub 40 5 mile on the sea front. Pace for the first 2.5 miles was 8:13 and was very comfortable, wanted to kick on way back.

When i turned, the wind hit, hadn't notice earlier, so didn't want to push too hard yet, so just got pace down to 8:08.

Distance 5.10 miles, pace 8:08 and time 41:15.

    Easy 5 miles tomorrow.

Immediate plan is to recover from DCM. I'm carrying a sore left glute ever since race day. I thought it had cleared up but then last Friday it made a reappearance. Had a 2 mile warm-up, a game of 6-a-side (not advisable the week after a marathon, especially if you haven't kicked a ball in literally years) and I had to bail on my warm-down back home. Glute was just too sore. Legs were in bits on Friday evening. Feeling better now.

Probably will try a small run one morning this week then two runs over the weekend. Then just get back to 25-35 miles a week building up speed back to sub 7:15 pace for 6 miles by year-end. No races planned.

Jan 14 is pencilled in as the start date for my first PD schedule, for CCM (sub 3:30). This includes 2 buffer weeks.

    Friday

Went to club session last night and achilles still sore from before the marathon. Club did a core circuit training instead of tempo. Did 5k as warm up and warm down.

Did 5 today at lunch but I think i am going to call it a day for the year. This achilles is not going away so i think its better to rest it now and start fresh in the new year. I have no races planned for december anyhow.

Will do some core workouts instead and some swimming.

Going to used the 5k-15k JD program for first half of the year. Reason for this is because it's something different and with 2 kids under 2, I need something flexible and a good platform for new York marathon training.

Will do general runs till sat and then start the program. Will aim to get out 6 times a week mainly at lunch time in work.

Any advice along the way be great.

Today did 6.10 miles in 54:33 and pace 8:55. Quiet icy out side early this morning.

Best of luck with the JD plan. Just started phase 2 myself. Looks like some tough sessions in there but will worth it if we see some improvements in our times over the next few months.
