The charity I am raising funds for is St Luke's in Rathgar. This place does amazing work for cancer patients around Ireland. My mum had nothing but praise for this place while she was there. So I am raising funds in her memory for this charity.

I know times are tough and loads of people are looking for sponsorship, but if you want to sponsor me the link is:

    Best of luck.
Shake the cold and Burn up that course ( and maybe you can add the prefix "slightly above" to your username).

If cold is still there, adjust accordingly, but hopefully it will have cleared, make no net difference if it has.

Good luck next weekend, hope the weather is as kind as Dublin yesterday.

Good luck Sunday - supposed to be windy so keep the head down and tuck in on the bridges and the long avenues once you reach Manhattan - they can form a bit of wind tunnel. And beware - the clocks go back at 2am on Sunday !!

Looks like it was a toughie out there today T. Hope you enjoyed it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,851 ✭✭✭✭average_runner

Yeah a real toughie. Never recovered from earlier in the week.
Was never going to pull out. Knew at 5 miles I wasn't right but kept it going to 14.
Started coughing badly then and calf got very sore.
But what an experience and ain't too bothered about time.
    Officially retired now from marathons.

    New York Marathon Race Report

Ok, this has taken its time, plenty of time to think about it and recover.

The week of the marathon I was struggling with a chest infection and nasty cough, the Monday before I only managed 3 miles out of 5. By Thursday the house had my disease:eek:.

Flew out Friday morning, trying to convince myself it was just taper. Got a call that night saying our 11 month old had croup back in Dublin, this was going to be fun.

Went to the Expo Friday afternoon, jaysus New York traffic is crazy. Good expo though and got a pair of Ghost 6 for 75 euro, S5 racer for 55 euro and new Garmin 220 for 200 euro. Spent the night coughing, blamed the plane, I was ok surely.

Sat day we took it easy, i sat in a jewellers for 3 hours coughing (but i am well!!) whiie wife was ring shopping.

So race day came, I felt good, got on the bus and reached the headquarters at 8am, so not much waiting about. Got into the corral at 8:50 and we were pushed to the bridge at 9:10. At 9:30, the starter said "On your marks" and a cannon went off without warning, a few thousand jumped!!!

First 2 miles was over the bridge and at this stage I had a fleece on, a hat and gloves. It was freezing. Pace was 8:30 ish but wasnt concentrating on pace for the first 3 miles. After the bridge i took off the fleece, gloves and the hat.

Started to settle into a good rhythm, around 8:10 pace. This was always the plan as was the way i ran Athlone. After 8 miles it was becoming an effort and the coughing started. At mile 13 i knew i was in real trouble but made the decision I will finish no matter what it takes.

Mile 15 we hit the bridge and my calf was in bits, coughing getting worst and I had to stop. Walked for 1/2 mile and then ran again up to mile 18, enjoying the amazing crowds. Told the wife at mile 17, i was switching to a run/walk strategy.

From Mile 18 it was walk 1/2 mile, run a 1/2 mile but it gradually turned into more a walk than a run, still coughing and calf killing me. Central Park I ran a bit more but probably more of a shuffle:eek:. Came across finish line in 4:11.

I thought i would be furious with myself when i crossed the line, but I think when i was walking i realised it wasn't my day and there is worst things out there.

The crowds were brilliant and even though I didn't achieve what I wanted, it was still a great day and in a funny way my best achievement in a marathon, in that it was my toughest ever and I stuck at it.

My recovery for the marathon was 8 hour shopping trip around Woodbury Common. But in fairness to my wife, she ran and got the tickets while I queued at the bus station:D

    Hindsight
I trained hard this year, gave it everything, got a PB in all the races I did bar the marathon, knocking chunks from my times. I wasn't 100% on the day and that's just a part of running.

    Future Plans
This was my last marathon, plan is to concentrate on the 10k, 5k, 10 miles races next year. Maybe within 3 years i might break 40 for a 10k.

Serious respect for keeping going and finishing under the circumstances - a lot of people would have quit so kudos for finishing.

Have you got a next race in mind next?

A few club races in December, then after that it might be Raheny. Planning to drop to 3 sessions a week till xmas, just as a nice step back program but keeping base fitness.

Well done on not DNFing. If you keep up the mileage close to what you're currently logging and shift the focus to shorter distances I think you'll be inside 40 minutes before the end of 2014.

Great experience and major kudos for seeing it through.
There's many people who'd bite your hand off for that time.
