Engagement Ring Problem

    Hi All,
I dont know if im posting this in the right section but..
I bought an engagement ring over a year ago. I spoke to the jeweller about a design that my Fiance wanted and he said he could make it up.
I asked for a half carat diamond in the centre and 2 smaller stones either side.
Basically to make a long story short, I have no clue about diamonds but, i seen a half carat diamond in a ring the other day and it definitely looks bigger than the one i got. It was the side "cut".
I feel that im after being ripped off by him lying about the size of the stone! Do I have a leg to stand on even though the purchase was over a year ago?

    Thanks

Well the first thing you need to do is confirm that you did not get what you ordered. Might need to go to a diamond expert to do this. An option is to maybe go into a jewellers looking to price the ring and see what they say it is? I think you can get these things valued.

    hi axer.

thanks for the reply. i couldnt go to that jewellers because they made it. so they'd recognise the ring. If i find out the diamond is smaller than i asked for, where do i go from there?

    Thanks

I meant going to a different jewellers. If you can show what you paid for is different from what you got then you first give the seller the option to remedy the breach of contract and if they are unwilling or unable to then take them to the small claims court. I think you will have a strong enough argument that you relied on the sellers expertise to give you the correct stone but you will need to show some proof of what you paid for is not what you got e.g. a quote or something.

    Hi Chelsea1

I don't know much about your rights but I've recently gotten engaged and when we were in the jewelers we were shown a few different rings of the same carat. some looked bigger than others the jeweler explained that it was the way that they were cut. Some were wider at the top, some had the bulk of the stone hidden so that they looked deep or high set. So I think it's to do with the cut. I think the previous advice was good, go to another jewelers and find out the actual/size and value of the ring.

If its not what you ordered then your well within your rights to have it replaced, but if it is the same carat as you asked for maybe the jeweler will replace it through good faith?

    Good luck!

carat is the weight of a diamond. could easily be the correct weight but different size

A 0.50ct round brilliant cut diamond, well cut, should measure around 5.15mm in diameter.

I would assume that you got a valuation for insurance from the jeweller for the ring, which should have stone dimensions and, because he made it, actual weights of the stones on it.

It could be that the second stone you saw may be the same weight but spreading across a different diameter (in which case the second stone won't be as high), which means that the second stone may not be as well cut (if a stone spreads too wide and is too shallow, it won't sparkle as well because the proportions and facet angles are off).

    Hope this helps.

    EDIT:
