Single Stakes About query

I'm just trying to get my head around SSA bets at the minute. Think I have it all worked out, but there is one particular scenario where two online calcs disagree with each other.

I'm looking at these two calculators:
    http://www.free-bet-calculator.co.uk/
    http://www.bettingmad.com/newsettler.asp

The bet, for simplicity, is a €1 each way SSA on two horses, who are both priced at 12/1 and both have 1/4 place odds (so a total stake of €4). The scenario where the calculators disagree is where one of the horses wins and the other is placed.

Free-bet-calc states that the returns in this case are €38 (€34 profit).
    Bettingmad says €26 (€22 profit).

The second result makes more sense to me. The 'Win' returns would be €12 (i.e. one win bet, minus the stake).

For the place returns, if 12/1 at one quarter odds is 3/1, then I sum them up as 3+4+3+4 = 14 (and 12 + 14 = 26 = total returns).

Just wondering if somebody who is well used to doing this type of bet can comment. Thanks.

How do you get a stake of €4 ?
    Either its a €2 e.w. double or a €1 e.w. single and €1 e.w double which costs €6.

The bet I'm talking about is a Single Stakes About bet. That's a Single bet on each selection, with the stake from one winning selection being placed as an an additional single on the other selection (and vice versa). They are the building blocks of multiple bets like the Round Robin and all the 'Flag' bets.

So, it's two e/w singles of €1 (unit stake), which totals €4.
