I have a two man canoe that I have used a few times and love. Not experienced for rapids or anything like that but was wondering if it's possible to spend a day canoeing back to Limerick from somewhere like Killaloe. I live right by King John's Castle so it would be perfect to spend the day making our way back to here. I have checked out the route on google maps and http://www.iwai.ie but the info is geared towards boats. I'm not sure I understand the issue with the number of turbines running and how this affects the water. Is it possible to get out and walk around Ardnacrusha and does anyone know if it's safe or even allowed for canoes to take this journey to Limerick?

Thanks. Yeah I have walked that way and defo too difficult for me. I was thinking more of the Ardnacrusha way but can't get any info on if we can go that way or if it is safe.

There isn't actualy that much to it for an experienced paddler, anyone at a lv. 3 standard wouln't be pushed. Apprently harder in high water though.

I'd be near that nursing home a bit. I'll bring a boat next time and have a look. :) Cheers

Are you still interested in doing this? If you were to go by Ardnacrusha you would have to ring ahead to the Power Sation to tell them that you are coming. You have to pay them aswell to operate the lock gates.I think its around 37 cent or something like that.

I would advise against going down by Doonass and Castleconnell as there a couple of pretty big rapids that would be daunting if you havnt paddled them before.
