Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Questions about sub work and payment and the dole...

So got the long awaited phonecall this morning and managed to nab myself not only some sub work today but tomorrow as well. Since it's my first time, there's questions I need to ask...

    1. Formality question here; what's the standard procedure with regards being paid? Does the principal pay me when my services are no longer required? Does the Department of Education just send me out a cheque? What's the standard methods of payment?

    2. In terms of the dole, I've obviously been on benefits while waiting and come tomorrow evening, I'll be out of a job again. So do I ring the offices up and inform them I've had two days work? I was planning on going in on Friday anyway, to tell them I'll be away for two weeks on holiday, so can I just wait and tll them then and tell them then? Or should I be ringing them tonight?

    3. Finally, I've been told there's a chance I'm going to be taxed pretty heavily but there could be a chance I can reclaim some of it. What's the procedures or the ins-and-outs there?

    Many thanks in advance :)

I'm assuming this is primary school subbing?

Um...honestly? Not sure. I think so. It was a special needs school so it seemed to be a primary school set up but with secondary aged students.

Ring your dole office and inform them you have 2 days of work.

You will probably get put on "emergency tax' as you will have no tax certificate for this employment, but you will be able to reclaim it back! Congratulations on getting some work!

    Ok, cool. Thanks :)

Just to ask again though, whats the procedure with getting paid? I got the feeling they thought I should know about these things but I don't have a clue. Money wasn't mentioned and I didn't want the last thing I said to them to be "now, pay me!" since I want to get back in in the future if I can. Will a paycheck or something be sent out in the post or what?

Ask the school secretary if you will be paid, and if so, how and when.

You said there was second level students at this special school. If it is a VEC school/centre then you need to fill out a claim form.

Don't tell the dole about this until you find out about payment. It could be a case that this was an offer of work experience ( but unlikely). I did lots of subwork when i started teaching, the principal never discussed payment with me, I always dealt with the secretary about payment.

Ok, thanks. I'll get in touch with the secretary and ask today :)

You will get paid by the dept of education (presuming its under the dept and not vec or youth reach) You will need to give the secretary ur pps number and all your details to give to the dept. These will then be saved and placed on the dept of education database for future sub work. Next time you are in a school you will only need to give them your pps and and they can find you on the system. Tax is at 42% (CRAZY!!) but since its only sub work you are able to claim this back. To re-claim you need to go into the revenue office, recieve a tax credit certificate (I think thats what its called!!) and ring the dept. of education they will then sort everything out. Because its your first time subbing (Im just assuming!?) it could take a while for payment to come through and for you to be put on the pay roll, generally its every second thursday though!! Hope this was some help!!!

Ok, thanks for the detailed post lollipoplady :D

Don't like ringing the school up a week later hunting them down for money but I guess thats just how it happens. Know for future reference to go into the secs. office when I'm in there though.

Ok, figure it's better to bump this thread since it's a continuation rather than start a new one...

Paycheck was in the pile of post sitting at my door wyhen I got back from holidays yesterday. My question is in relation to the whole "Going to be taxed to hell" bit people warned me about. It says my...

    Total Pay: 255.82
    Total Deductions :12.79
    Net Paid: 243

Now, thats for "Substitute - Basic", two days work. My question is as follows: does that mean it's 243 after tax? Is it 243 before tax? Or is the amount taken in Tax even shown on the payslip? (I notice there's a "Taxable Gross" section which says 248, and a tax credit which say 64.)

Sorry about being a nusiance here. All so new to me. Getting paid for work, that is...

net pid means you got 243. Check your bank account. Thursday is pay day. Unless they told you you're getting a cheque.

Fair enough, but where do I find how much tax I paid then
