    Rory 5th in the 1500m

A 1100m jog and 400m sprint! Gillick would have had a shot at winning that one!!

With the distance races at these championships (from what i remember) always tends to be a bit of a burn up and are rarely fast times but great for spectators:D

it's a joint team competition...men and women are a combined score..they compete together

I thought it was just one competition, not a seperate one for men and women??

Carey was 8th of 12 in the 400m. Where is Joanne Cuddihy these days? You'd imagine a fully fit Cuddihy would have bagged the 12 points in that race today.

Cuddihy is part of the relay team. She has just finished her medical studies and has been training Down Under.

is it time to start to get worried about gillick

Gillick just kept going backwards in the home straight, very unusual.
46.95 is very worrying after a few runs.

    46.95 :eek::eek::eek:

    :(

Heard from some people on here he missed a good bit of training with calf problems (cannot confirm this though) which would explain his recent performances. Still plenty of time in the summer and long way off WC

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,076 ✭✭✭Dan man

I think what is worrying is the fact that he has had 3 outings and 46.95secs is the slowest yet. Surely if everything was well he would be progressively lowering his season's best.

unless the change of coach is taking time to gel and he's working on some master plan that will peak in 14 month time.

    I can't imagine 46.95 being part of a plan for a 44.77 runner though.

Could still be in a base phase with lots of endurance specific training and hasn't done much of the speed stuff yet. I'm not sure how the rest of his group are going. Hard to know but hope he turns it around for later in the season.

I never would have considered 45.25 A standard for Daegu to be an issue, but right now you'd got to worry will he even manage that.

Really hope he turns it around. I don't know why but when he has a bad day I feel twice as gutted for him as I do for the other athletes. Just a very likeable character.

Bit of a shambles there in the relay. That's gonna hurt us!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,029 ✭✭✭Pisco Sour

10th place after day 1, but around 25 points ahead of 11th.

Great run by the relay guys. Think they were 3rd.

    Day 1 totals

    Position|Country|Points
    1.|Greece|177
    2.|Turkey|174
    3.|Norway|151
    4.|Belgium|143
    4.|Romania|143
    6.|Netherlands|140

    9.|Finland|129
    10.|Ireland|121
    11.|Slovenia|98

The points should be correct but apologies if there 1 or two points off (Irelands is spot on though for certain)

    how many get relegated?

I believe its two. We are safe(ish) once we don't have any zero point clangers. It was always going to be about avoiding relegation.

I was browsing through the start-lists for tomorrow's events and going on season's bests/personal bests then Slovenia should overtake Ireland. It seems that our best chance of survival will be to catch one of the other teams above us, Switzerland maybe. Anyway, best of luck to Team Ireland tomorrow. Can't wait to see how young Ciara Mageean and Darren McBrearty get on!

Sheite, was basing my confidence on ecoli's wrong table. We are screwed. We need a few to pull out a Barr or Crowe tomorrow and punch above their weight.

In my mind relegation will be a disaster. There is no Euro Team Champs next year. It'll be 2014 before we are back in this flight. At that stage Hession, Gillick, DOR will probably be gone. We need to stay up.

Don't panic just yet my friend. On paper we should beat the Slovenians in a fair few events tomorrow. Unfortunately, in most of our more favourable events tomorrow, the Slovenians won't be too far behind so our gains over them will probably not be too substantial. But in some of the field events in which we are weak, Slovenia should do well so they will gain a lot on us in those events. It's probably going to be on a knife-edge, but at least if it comes down to the relays, we should fair better! Stay positive!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,076 ✭✭✭Dan man

I actually think that the table on the EAA website is wrong. I calculated Slovenia's points tally based on the results and I put them on 96.5pts.
This is backed up by lots of other websites and I can't for the life of me see where they got 121 for Slovenia. Even if their relay team was re-instated (doubtful) they still would not be on 121! It must be a typo.
This would be very welcome news for the Irish team, not to mention thirtyfoot!!

A bit disappointed with Day 1. However, a few notable performances.

Nice to see the men's 4x100 team running 39.6x, which must be their first time under 40 in a couple of years?

Barr and Crowe stepped up when needed. Faroughi, I believe, will become one of our stars over the next 5 years, he's on the cusp of breaking into the 2.2x region and improving his 2.20m PB.

Pena was disappointing, but luckily there were a few others off form in the vault too.

Foster and Reilly performed in and around their PBs and got deserved top 5 finishes for their efforts.

With an 8.43 indoor 3000m PB, it's difficult to understand a 9.17 performance from Cullen. And it goes without saying that a relay team qualified for the Worlds should be getting the baton around, but even the best relay teams in the world drop it (U.S and British teams in Olympics, etc).

Here's to Day 2! Looking forward to Foster possibly improving her PB in the 200m. O'Rourke usually starts off outside 13 seconds, so we'll probably be looking at third at best there behind Vukicevic and Urech.

Don't forget Yanit! The race is in Turkey, after all.

The EAA website is wrong. On the live feed last night they showed the final standings after day 1 and we had a healthy 25 point lead over Slovenia.

Why is there no Euro Teams next year? Because of there being a B-Standard European Championships?

Am hearing a rumour that Gordon Kennedy has to run the 110 Hurdles today. If true this is a total indictment of the team management after what has been a very poor first day. Kennedy must be totally bemused having been a first hand spectator at the relay shenanigans last August. And where is John Coghlan the relay coach? Certainly not out with the team. Add in what is looking like a very doubtful decision to send Gillick to Florida and the failure of Tori Pena to do the only thing that makes any sense of adopting her as Irish - get points in the Euro Team Champs - and you have to hope that Amkrom starts taking charge of senior team affairs sooner rather than later.

It was Gillick's decision to go to Florida, nothing to do with team management. Don't be too soon in writing Gillick off...someone with his desire for success can make things happen for himself even if it seems the 2011 season may be one to forget. But it would be an absolute mess if Gordon Kennedy had to run high hurdles.

If Kennedy has to do hurdles it must be that McDonald is injured out there. Too late to call a reserve. Options would be Timmy to run it but he would be last as he has never high hurdled. Timmy has U23 coming so would be risky. So to get one point throw someone in. If Kennedy has stepped up it's another example of the charachter of the man. This happens a lot in these team comps and unless you have the luxury of bringing team reserves then you have to make do with what you have. Bottom line with McDonald out we will only get 1pt so doesn't really matter who does it.

Is he risking injury by voluntering? I don't recall him even running a 400 hurdles before and those high hurdles are pretty damn big!

Would kouroush not be a better selection. Experience with high hurdles and finished his own event so it wouldnt get in the way?

Liz McGolgan's daughter, Eilish, travelled with team GB to their euro team champs as a reserve as she could cover at anything from 800 to steeplechase

Unfortunately it's not as easy to have a sprinter/hurdler reserve ...

Understand the concern but i would rather not see an athlete get injured at all and better to see someone who has actually raced the high hurdles before rather than someone who hasnt (in years for the best of my knowledge but not sure if he has done them at all) less of an injury risk by putting in someone with a bit of experience as opposed to none

Does anyone know where to watch today's event from Izmir online?

I have the TRTworld link from yesterday but it doesn't seem to be showing anything?

    Anyone else having success?

    Thanks,
