Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Just cut silage on 5 acres of mature (very mature) grass and i am going to reseed it straight away.
question - is there any point in spraying off after cutting the silage.

i was thinking of ploughing staight away and then spraying for weeds 6 weeks after sowing?

You should have pre sprayed the silage with round up and cut 7 days later. We did this on 25 acres, baled and wrapped on Monday. spreading slurry and lime now and will be reseeding on Friday. Using 1 pass system - no ploughing

should have done that last week!!! too late now, i will have to plough as one side is too compacted and needs more then a one pass i would think,
too far away from farm yard to draw slurry,

will you be spraying for weeds after the grass is up?

You can spray afterwards for weeds of course but the advantage of a good glyphosphate burn is that it gets rid of all the weed grasses, scutch and the like.
Unfortunately if these re emerge there is no spray that I know of that will kill them.

Going doing a few acres after the first cut now as well, Is it getting too late to sow oates with the grass seed or is there anything more suitable for this time of year?

Do you intend to cut this reseed for silage again next year? Will it be too severe on the ley if so?

I thought you were never meant to put out slurry and lime together?:confused:

If you are going to graze it then it isn't too late to sow oats with the grass seed. 25-30 kg/acre of oats should be enough to sow with grass seeds.

What would you recommend for taking a late cut of silage?

No it would be too late before the oats would be at the right stage for cutting.

So that you could graze it earlier

Depends on how quickly it grows some years it could be as early as 1 month after sowing

    More bulk to graze earlier

    4 leaf stage

You would want to sow undressed oats as it would be cheaper and also sow it with the fert spreader to keep costs down

    hi all,

    Just looking for some advice for next summer;
Say silage cut on June 1st - reseeded straight after it
Spray burn off on May 23rd?
Slurry, lime, muck, plough, reseeds etc from June 2nd to 5th
When would it fit for grazing light cattle? – (no sheep on farm)
When would it be fit for 2nd cut silage or is this recommended?
Do you fertilize as part of reseeding & again when grass starts to grow?

    K

I reseeded a few acres 5 weeks ago. Let yearling cattle in on it over the week end. I will let them give it a lightish grazing, and then give it a bag of 10:10:20
