Hi all, I did computer in college, and was quite decent at programming. It's something I haven't done for quite some time and I am anxious to get back into it so I've decided I will begin by developing a webpage and then progressing that gradually.

I've registered a domain name with Blackknight (just now) and want to get a hosting package that allows me to use MySQL and PHP, as these are where I want to focus my learning in relation to web development for now.

The question I have is one that you all might find easy to answer. I'm currently using a Mac Book Pro, and have apache and PHP on this and was wondering whether I need to get the windows hosting package or the linux package. I'm looking at digiwebs 'advanced' package at the moment. http://hosting.digiweb.ie/

If anyone has any suggestions tips, I'll love to receive them, and if there is a possibility your advice may breach the forum charter please PM me, I belive that is allowed.

    Thanks.

It should be very similar, but there might be minor differences.

Apache, PHP and MySQL all behave the same on OSX as they do on Linux. Go for the Linux package. Just make sure your install of PHP etc it up to date on your Mac!

The only difference I've come across (which doesn't apply to you but is useful to know) is that linux is case sensitive, while windows is not. Not sure about OSX.

So if you have an image Aimage.jpg in your images folder and a link that says <img src="images/aimage.jgg"> the linux server will not be able to find the image.

OS X is a bit weird about case sensitivity. By default, the file system isn't case sensitive. The command line tools are all case sensitive, but the UI stuff isn't.

That's a very good point though. out of habit, I observe the correct case for web stuff so I'd hadn't thought about it in a long long time!

All of our Linux (and Windows) hosting plans would give you PHP and MySQL. You'd get Apache on Linux and IIS on Windows

    You're quick Blacknight!

I decided I'd go with your company anyway in the end, seen as how I'd gottnet the domain name there. I was impressed by your webpage and so I got the minimus linux package. Hope I can get a test page up there now fairly quick so I can start progressing things. :)
