That's like saying you pay for €50 petrol via debit card but you can't actually get the petrol until it clears.

On the post offices end paying €50 cash is the exact same as paying €50 via debit / credit card from their records point of view(i.e. You have cleared your debt for the transaction) so I don't see why it would make any difference for a prize bond transaction

But regardless of how you pay you are not given a physical prize bond on the Post Office premises, unlike getting petrol in your tank at the petrol station. The regulations are written in such a way so as to allow the Prize Bond Company decide when to include your new bond on the register of bonds.

    http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/eli/1993/si/337/made/en/print

5 Issue of bonds and registration.

    5. (1) As soon as may be after receipt of the purchase money in respect of bonds, the Operator shall allocate an individual serial number to each bond and a bond certificate showing the relevant serial numbers shall be issued by the Operator to the holder.

    (2) A bond shall be registered in the register of bonds to be kept by the Operator in the name (or, as appropriate, joint names or title) of the purchaser of such bond or the person for whom such bond was purchased.

    (3) The Operator shall record in the register the last address furnished by the holder for the purpose of receiving any document (including the bond certificate) or notification issued by the Operator in relation to the bond.

    (4) A bond shall be deemed to have been issued when it has been registered in the register.

Those regulations also say a new bond will have to be registered for 8 days before being eligible to be included in the weekly draws. That has been superseded and bonds are now included in draws as soon as they are registered. But the "As soon as may be" for registration has not been changed as far as I can find out.

I have a vague recollection from years ago that new bonds had to wait for 3 months before going into the draws, but I can't find anything about that. But it is the case that new bonds have to be held for 3 months before they can be cashed in if anyone was not aware of that.

Nothing this week, last win €50 7th April on 30k batch.
Interesting too, that each of the six counties in Northern Ireland, winners are in single figures, but the 26 counties all well into double and treble figures, Dublin is the only county that has winners in 4 figures, this week reaching 2,916.
All this reflecting population and were the most bonds are held, all down to odds.

I don't dispute any of your points, my post was a reply to garit who said nothing will happen on their end until an post get their money from the merchant processing the debit card

    Garit is correct.

    Garit is correct.

    Any evidence of that?

I never came across an merchant which waits for credit/debit card transactions to be cleared before they consider the payment completed and deliver the associate services/goods.

That's what NTMA told me. It also says in their terms that they issue the bonds as soon as possible after receipt of the money.

I'm not fully sure why but I do know issuing bonds is very different to selling a product, once they issue the bonds there is nothing that can be done to reverse them. Even if you steal a card and buy bonds with it once the bonds are issued they can't be revoked, they are yours and the law protects you from anyone taking them off you (Except CAB or a court order). Those laws are necessary for the financial markets to work, but mean it is necessary to make sure they have received the cash first.

They also can't spend the money or receive interest on it until they have it, 3 days interest means nothing to most people but a huge amount to a bond issuing institution.

    This evidence:

As soon as may be after receipt of the purchase money in respect of bonds.

That is the Prize Bond Company in receipt of the purchase money, not some agent which processes a purchase on their behalf.

Nothing for us today. We will have our €100k batch 1 year next week and have won €750 on them. We've also won €150 on the €20k batch that we bought in August and €50 on an old bond from a very small batch. That's €950 since mid May last year - €50 win next week would make it an even €1000. Here's hoping :)

Well, we won nothing this week so we didn't make the even €1000. Well done to those of you that won :)

Nothing again this week. Last win was 31st March.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,345 ✭✭✭Negative_G

    No win today.

I won €50 last week and the notice letter usually arrives the following Tuesday with the bond arriving on the Thursday.

I've only received the Notification letter this week and that arrived on Thursday. Still no sign of the prize bond cert.

    Anyone else experience similar?

Nothing since Paddys Day, what a crock of sh1t. I have a Google Finance watchlist of about 50 shares like Google and the rest that I watch rising by the day but I just cant bring myself to invest, it just feels like everything is overvalued and a correction is overdue. Wish there was somewhere to get a decent return for your cash, no point looking at property either, prices rise faster than I earn it even though Im saving 50% of my income these days. First world problems compared to other peoples issues but it is very depressing.

I wonder what the opportunity costs are? E.g. having the same amount of money invested in a pension scheme, in a savings account and also in a investment funds....

Average winnings are pretty decent compared to a savings accounts.

But looking at the average is misleading as the large prizes increase it quite a bit and therefore regular luck won't deliver that average for you.

In short, with a lot of luck, you will win much more that the average. With "averge" luck will win less than the average winnings (because the average winnings are driven up by high prizes which you won't win with you average luck). And with poor luck you might win nothing or at least sugnificantly below average.

Just a quick question. I've bought some bonds but received nothing in the post as confirmation?

What do you typically receive? Also I want to ensure I am entered into the draw each week!

You will receive a confirmation slip with the bond numbers in the post. Mine took almost two week to arrive however, so if you just bought the bonds a few days ago they are probably still being processed.
