McCrack I hope I give you many more months of amusment, that's all we can do, it's all a game of chance, I enjoy good health and appreciate what I have, a win on anything is a bonus in life, last year's Lottery Christmas millionaire raffle top prize 1 million euro went UNCLAIMED, bloody hell, now they are the mysteries I don't understand, going to the bother purchasing a ticket and then don't claim the prize, some people don't deserve to win anything.
I purchased my first prize bond in 1985 to 1990 I had 100, then stopped but
still have them, then in 2015 with interest rates on the floor purchased 20k batch wins to date €450euro. August 2016 30k batch wins to date €400, September 2017 10k batch no wins yet.
I live in hope, I dream big and there is always next Friday and many more months of amusment.

No I get the whole lotto dream thing - the big win or whatever

Its the genuine disappointments that are expressed around here thats somewhat amusing -posters are pissed off each month after month etc

Its like buying a scratch card or playing the lotto and being upset it didnt win

Ask About Money has a list. You might find something slightly better. Always remember the 39% DIRT on the interest on most products.

Have you got any examples of this? People who genuinely thought they were going to win and were surprised and pissed off "month after month" when they didnt? Or is it just something you're pretending is happening for your own amusement as you put it?

So cashing them in, i have about 40-45 individual certs. Do i have to write every serial number down on the bloody repayment form? (such archaic nonsense)

Also, is the serial number on the back or the actual bond numbers?

    That's what I did when cashing in a load - I wrote Bond AAA123456 - AAA 567890 etc
Bond Nos are on the front where it says 'from AAA123456 to AAA 567890'

I have a prize bond of £20 since about 97. Don't know where it ever went as I probably never took it with me when I moved out of home. Do you know if they write to you if you win or do you have to keep an eye on prize bond yourself?

    They write.

Nothing for us this week :(:(

Nothing for me for a while now but i like checking it after work every friday in hope! although we only have around €3k in Prize bonds these days.

I was looking at the UK Premium bonds and their website gives alot more info on winners compared to our site.
They have a much more user friendly listing that shows you the prize, Bond number, area (not just county), the total bonds held by the winner and winning bond value (whether it was from a large number all bought together or a much lower amount.) and crucially when the bond was bought.
would love to see that on Prizebonds.

is there any way of knowing rough dates on prizebonds to guess how old they are just from the number ?

There is nothing crucial about when the bonds were bought. It is not even slightly important. Every bond has the same chance of winning.

bad choice of words, should have said interestingly instead of crucial.
but yep of course you are right every bond has the same chance, just would be nice to get a better understanding on the breakdown of winners profiles every Friday

I have a bond from June 1980 which is W890xxx. So 23 years after the launch of Prize Bonds there were still fewer than 25 million issued. Not too surprising since a bond would have cost more than a weeks' wages back in the day.

I also have a couple from the AE series, September 1984. The issue dates of the million winners also gives some indication of the sequence in more recent times.

So unlikely that my bonds bought in the late 1950's will ever come up, they have not so far anyway

Very unlikely, they'd be right down the bottom of the drum!!

Unlikely but not impossible. Click on View All Prizes Awarded. Then on Winning Bond at the top of the column. That will show the winners every week in Bond order. You can do the same for each County. Every draw has a few winners from the very early days.

I did a quick trawl of the previous 25 x €1M draw winners, all we can see is when the bond was purchased.
Its all totally random but there are no winners in this sample before 2002 so maybe its more unlikely any very old bonds before 2000 can get the top prize due to the increase of bonds in the past 18 years
some lucky punters won the top prize in less than a year though but we don't know how many bonds each holder had.

If you invest in UK Prize Bonds, what is the tax implication if you win?

  • Registered Users Posts: 289 ✭✭FoolsGold1

I had almost given up on checking these. However, I had no win on 5/1/18...BUT...on 29th December I got €100 (2 x 50) to round off the old year. That brings my winnings (on c.70K) to the dismal total sum of €400 for the full year of 2017, Jan-Dec. In comparison, I'll go back few years for the hell of it! 2016: €750; 2015: €600; 2014: €1,200; 2013: €1,200 ('13 and '14 exact same total.) Where have all the flowers gone....???

Yes and prizes were actually better, top prize IR100,000, 2nd prize IR50,000 3rd prize IR25,000, then 2 IR10,000, 10 IR5,000, then lots of IR1,000 and IR250 the lowest, the weekly top prize was IR15,000 and that was when money was worth money, but they were the days of high interest rates, them days are long gone, high interest rates only good for prize bond prize fund, bad for everything else house mortgages etc etc.
It was a ''catch 22'', having a large holding in the 1980s would have been nice, but then if you were not winning you'd be a big loser, you get so much more for your money on earned interest elsewhere, but then again as I've said so many times before, it's all a game of chance, now that interest rates are nearly zero, the down side, the prizes are miserable too:mad:

In the good old days Savings Certs paid 61% after 5 years. Of course my mortgage interest rate was 18% back then. Is this where the "recovery" is heading?
