see someone with a very very old bond got 50 quid this week, bond number 2804. never seen one that old must have been sold in the very first few weeks of the draw being set up, they've been waiting a while!

The problem is there are very few "non term" contract type options that have the flexibility of Prize Bonds that you can get your cash back relatively quickly (within 2-3 weeks) without penalization.

Even if you were to invest a lump sum for example with your bank, I think the majority of those investment portfolios require a minimum 2 year signup to ensure any sort of gains.

This is why there is a hesitation on my part to move away from prizebonds as the risk with them is minute and as previous posters said if you get 2/3 wins on your bonds throughout the year the winnings are as much as the interest on most banks savings accounts at present because interest rates are still not great (obviously dependent on how much of a lump sum you have).  Where as with investment portfolios you are locked in time wise (majority of time) and have a slightly higher risk of either making nothing or losing money and probably also people dont trust their banks that much anymore...

on that point I wonder why they don't increase the number of prizes? They must have so much more revenue than ever before, yet the amount or the value of the prizes haven't increased :confused:

The value of prizes follows a fixed formula that is published online and very clearly explained.

Currently many bonds issued by countries are negative interest, most banks give 0% interest on deposit, ecb rate is 0% too.

Prizebond prize rate is 0.5% pa and its calculated on a monthly basis based on current value of Prizebonds in issue.

    http://www.statesavings.ie/PrizeBonds/Pages/Prizes.aspx#

If ecb rate was 5%, then prize fund would be ten times current value

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

I've put a significant amount of money into price bonds 8 months ago. Not as much as the OP, but still a lot of money. And I've won €0.00 so far. I guess sticking the money in here was a bit of a foolish choice. That said, at the time I had little or no alternatives. Pension contribution maxed up (to save income tax) and the money paid in interest on a savings account is near zero. Half of zero after tax :-)

Thanks to pbwinner and to PB2018 for their update; here is mine for comparison (on c.€70K):

    2016 ... 15 x €50 = €750
    2017 ... 8 x €50 = €400
    2018 to

I worked it out i think. 1.5%. I am thinking there is no Dirt tax. What is the rate of dirt tax on normal savings?

If it is 1.5% is that not better than any of the banks and no tax to pay.

€ 1,000!!!!!!! (thought I'd share to show that there is hope for boardsies!) :)
Randomly arrived in the post today. I have € 10.9K, most bought in a batch a few years back. Only one € 50 (think it was 50 anyway) win to date otherwise. The win actually came from an older batch of € 500, not my main bundle. And yes I wrote to them last September asking if I'd missed any winnings and how would I go about selling them!

Do they email you if you win or how to you know?

Do you think it is worth investing in Prize Bonds?

Well done gOg - think you're the first person (on this forum to have alerted us immediately to a) win of more than the basic!
