Nothing for me today. The number of €50 prizes in the August draws is 4,595 up from 4,568 in July. The increase of 27 is the same as between June and July.

Newest bond to win on 01 July was BAU 233910, newest 05 August BBB 715668, sales of around €47 million.

Those three winners to the same person were in Monaghan where there was just a total of 29 winners.

Since June, Premium Bonds in the UK are paying out 1.4%. The maximum holding is £50,000, there are only 12 draws in the year, and nearly all of the prizes are £25.

If someone wanted to purchase bonds today, say £50,000 or €60,000 worth, would you recommend they purchase the UK bonds instead, or would the currency risk be too high?

Nothing in july on €170k-5x€50 in 2022.

Well 1.4% is much better than our measly 0.35%,your winnings would be in sterling but i think you need a UK bank a/c or address.i'm not an expert on them but i'm sure some of the more regular posters on here would be more au fait with them no doubt.

The amount paid out to £25 winners makes the real world return 1% with average luck. Same as it is 0.25% on Prize Bonds because of the money allocated to the big prizes.

I have 1 premium bond - given to me by my godfather at my baptism - many decades ago! Never won. But I got a letter in last few months saying they can no longer facilitate me as I don't have a UK bank account. I can't even remember what they said they would do - it's £25 at most to be returned - maybe not even that. I have to admit I had forgotten completely about being thrown out until I saw the message above.

The "Coming Soon" flyer which I posted on 18th July has been replaced with a new version. The change is that the words "Coming Soon" have been replaced with "As of September 2022". I'll scan and upload it when I get an opportunity.

"Line up everyone with £1,000 worth of Premium Bonds in order of their year's winnings, and the person halfway along would have won... not a penny! In fact, you'd need to walk past 70% of the line until you hit the first £25 winner."

€1000 held in irish pbs will on average win once every 19 years approx.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,547 ✭✭✭Hibernicis

The original and revised versions of the Coming Soon flyer. How impressive that State Savings are able to narrow this change down to an entire month - any normal business would have an exact date and time for a change of this magnitude when its just a few weeks away.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,866 ✭✭✭ozmo

Thats a cool site is there an Irish prize bonds version of that odds calculator?

    “Roll it back”

  • Registered Users Posts: 378 ✭✭Saudades

There is a spreadsheet on this thread somewhere but I can't figure out how to search within a specific thread since the boards upgrade. Maybe the original poster will repost.

You can calculate it yourself at real world return of 0.25% and round to the nearest €50 increment.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,556 ✭✭✭wassie

Would you also possibly be liable to pay tax on any UK pbs winnings if you're an Irish resident for tax purposes?

Irish pbs winnings are tax free.

If you have Revolut you can add a UK account and get a UK sort code and account number and add that to your NS&I account

  • Registered Users Posts: 378 ✭✭Saudades

Yep I looked into it further and realised with tax plus PRSI and USC, and the currency fluctuation, it's not worth it. Over the last 12 months, £1 has ranged from €1.150 to €1.215 so it's quite a swing with £50k, depending on your entry and exit dates it can be over a £3k swing in just a 12 month period.

    Just to compare them though,

Premium bonds of £50,000 would be expected to win £500 (€600) in a year.

Prize bonds of €60,000 would be expected to return €150 in a year.

A €450 gain, before tax, for the same level and type of investment.

August count, all prizes €50. The same 17 million bonds BAN to BBD in each of the four draws. All bonds newer than 13 weeks.

Friday 05 August. 98 prizes, average per million 5.765. Highest BAR 13, lowest BBB and BBD 2 each.

    12 103, 6.059. BAR and BBB 9 each, BAZ 1.

    19 103, 6.059. BAU 10, BBA 1.

    26 107, 6.294. BAP 12, BBC 2.

    Highest overall 34 BAP (8,6,8,12) and BAR (13,9,6,6). Lowest 12 BAZ (3,1,3,5).

68 million bonds won 411 prizes, average per million 6.044. x 52 x €50 equals €15,714.71. Divided by 62.5 to get what €100K would win in a year with the same luck equals €251.44 nearest to 5 x €50.

After many months of this count, it is clear that anyone who gets advice to exchange older bonds for newer ones should ignore it. Newer bonds are not any luckier than older ones. Same applies to consolidating smaller holdings into one large one. It is only making unnecessary work.
