Havent really been updating in a while but that is because I dont have any good news :-)

So far this year have won 2 x €50 prizes on an overall PB value of little over €100K so not really great.

I have been thinking about recent discussion on interest rate hikes and sounds like more to come, I havent seen it reflected in any sort of savings account increases yet but what do people think on the medium term with the prize bonds, do you think if interest rates continue to go up we should expect to see the % prize also start to increase closer to what it was a few years ago ?

Just 19 prizes in Longford, but one of them was the €50K. AV bond bought in 1993, will be a useful marker if anyone is trying to work out the sequence of when bonds were issued.

It's a lucky Friday for one Longford resident with the announcement of the Prize Bond winners. This week's Prize Bond Star Prize of €50,000 goes to lucky Prize Bond number AV 205464 held in County Longford. The lucky bond was purchased in 1993.

I'd expect them to go back to 0.5% within the next few months after the next ECB rate rise.

As far as I can see, all the banks have done is to change negative interest rates to zero. The government in the shape of the NTMA have no need to borrow from the Irish public at present, according to the links below. So there might be no change. They have spent the last few years, as have Credit Unions and banks trying to discourage deposits, chiefly by putting the €250K limit.

Despite that Prize Bonds and even the ordinary Post Office deposit account paying 0.05% and subject to DIRT have experience large inflows of cash every year. Last year Prize Bonds went up €339 million to €4,470 billion, and the deposit accounts went up €501 million to €4,420 billion. These and indeed the €24 billion total in all the NTMA Post Office products are only a drop in the ocean compared to the overall. Maybe the government will allow some increase to stop some sort of campaign against low deposit rates happening. But I think the banks and Credit Unions would have to have a say in that as well, as the owners of a lot more deposits.

Nothing for me today. The number of €50 prizes in the September draws is 4,625 up from 4,595 in August.

Newest bond to win on 05 August was BBB 715668, newest 02 September BBK 637783. Sales of around €56 million.

Logged onto my account after months and found I won E50, so that's a total of E100 from E5,000 bought 2 years ago

Thanks for that, I was curious about the year, I have bonds AM and AN dating back to 1990, an old bond AV winning €50,000 gives me hope, 1993 29years, that was a nice surprise for somebody in Longford.

7K invested in Bonds since 2011. Nothing won since 2017, before that a couple of 50s and 75s won. I feel like cash them in and invest in Shares, I know it's a bit risky... :)

In advance of any notional interest rate change, a little bit of history. I have posted the rates a few times before.

    2000 2.75%.

    2004 2.4%

    Sept 2007 3%.

    Jan 2012 2.25%

    June 2012 1.75%.

    Dec 2013 1.6%

    Nov 2014 1.25%.

    July 2016 0.85%.

    Aug 2017 0.5%.

    Feb 2021 0.35%.

I remember over 10,000 €75 prizes every week when it was 2.25%. It was still more than 9,000 when the €75's were done away with. Back then the fund was well under €2 billion but was able to produce double the number of prizes we have now, because of the higher rates. If we had 1.75% now it would be about 22,000 €50 prizes every week. But despite the low rates, every year sees a big increase in the amount of money people are putting into Prize Bonds.

From January (2014), the number of weekly €100 prizes will be halved from 500 to 250, according to the Prize Bonds Company, which runs the scheme.

This is the third cut to prizes in a year. Just last June, the top €1m prize was changed from once a month to once every second month. And last January, prizes were changed to provide for 500 weekly prizes of €100 and 8,200 prizes of €50. Previously, there had been 10 prizes of €250 and 9,000 prizes of €75.

€50 for me on 16 Sept. It shows that a few hundred bonds can win twice in the space of 9 months. The trouble is the few thousand either side which are overdue a win.

Up to date as of Friday 16 September 2022

    16 Sep 2022

Prize Bond Number Value of Prize

    MC935480 €50.00

    30 Dec 2021
