On Page 281 I estimated the sales at €617.195 million, so very close. The story says the value reached almost €4.7 billion, so I was a little bit over with that. Cashed in is much more difficult to estimate than sales, so I probably went wrong there.

"The number of €50 prizes in the January 2023 draws is 4,712 up from 4,373 in January 2022, an increase of 7.752%. Applying that to the fund value at the end of 2021, €4,442.6 billion would make the current value €4,786.995 billion, an increase of €344.395 million.

The newest bond to win on 07 January 2022 was AYV 705919, newest 06 January 2023 BCQ 456969, sales of around €617.195 million. That would mean bonds cashed in approx €272.8 million. That compares with sales of €660.544 million and cashed in €327.663 million in 2021 from the Annual Report."

Nothing for me today. The newest bonds to win are in the BED series, all bought this week. That person in Carlow probably thinks it will be like this every week.

May count. The same 18 million bonds BDC to BDT in each of the four draws. Not counting 2 x €500 prizes.

Friday 05. 101 prizes. Highest BDN 9. Lowest BDC & BDO 2 each.

    Friday 12. 91. BDK 10. BDO 1.

    Friday 19. 118. BDI & BDK 11 each. BDG, BDO & BDP 3 each.

    Friday 26. 106. BDI 12. BDQ 2.

    Highest overall BDN 35 (9,9,7,10). Lowest BDO 12 (2,1,3,6).

    72 million bonds won 416 prizes. Average per million 5.778. x 52 x €50 = €15022.22. Divided by 62.5 to get what €100K would win in a year with the same luck = €240.36. Nearest to 5 x €50.

That's an amazing start for that Carlow PBholder - think I might change my address as my current one is not bringing me any PB luck! Nothing again today.

The 2022 annual report of the Prize Bond Company has landed: https://www.statesavings.ie/media/pdf/prizebonds_annualreport_2022.pdf

The average prize won was just €67.36.

With over 751 million bonds the odds of winning a weekly prize are 164,349 to 1, or 38,000 to 1 in a month.

  • Registered Users Posts: 21,021 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

The total prizes paid out was €16,008,350 of which €11,832,950 was €50 prizes. That is 79.9174% of the prize money. Applying that to the 0.35% interest rate gives 0.258710. That is up from 0.255772 in 2021. If simple interest was paid instead of €50 prizes, every €100K would get €258.71. As long as the bigger prize structure stays the same, and the fund keeps increasing, this figure will keep creeping up.

do you know how many prize bonds were bought in the same years. as your data is biased towards the earlier years, one would be excused for thinking you had higher odds of winning in the earlier years. #did you initial investment make upa significantly higher proportion of overall bonds, or is you bonds now gone into a stale accounts area, ? if I was cynical, id suggest that to make prize bonds more appealing an post are biasing wins towards newer bonds. but I dunno

You are correct. The odds of winning were higher back in 2011, but have gradually decreased as the notional interest rate applied has kept coming down. There used to be around 10,000 €75 prizes in every draw, even though the amount in the fund was well under half of what it is now. Anyway €25K in bonds out of €4 billion is far too small a sample to prove anything.

    2000 2.75%.

    Nov 2014 1.25%.

    July 2016 0.85%.

    Aug 2017 0.5%.

    Feb 2021 0.35%.

    Nothing for me today.

The number of €50 prizes in the June draws is 4,810 down from 4,812 in May. The newest bond to win on 05 May was BDY454129, newest 02 June BEE615869, sales of around €38.5 million.

In 2022 the sales in May were €50.49 million, and cashed in €33.329 million. So it is possible that the €38.5 million sales was exceeded slightly by cashed in to produce the reduction in prize numbers. More likely is that some money received in May is not processed yet, and June sales numbers will reflect this. That appears to have happened in Feb/March as I posted in post #8620, copied below.

The number of €50 prizes in the April draws is 4,801, up from 4,752 in March. The newest bond to win on 03 March was BDE900303, newest 06 April BDS084912, sales of around €82.4 million.

I noted that the February sales of €37.2 million was low. The March sales are very high. Both were around €60 million in 2022. It looks like some funds received in February were delayed in processing. Overall the figures for the two months combined in both years are nearly the same.

So prize bonds is really 0.35% interest? That's diabolical in fairness.

In 3 years with 18K I got 2x50 euro so that probably works out under 0.35% per annum over 3 years. By my (probably wrong) calcs I should have gotten 63 a year so about 180 euro. So well below 0.35%.

I'm taking out my prize bonds are sticking them in the new 2% AIB account. I'm also thinking of using raisin.ie but it sounds like a bit of a pain tax wise.

  • Registered Users Posts: 292 ✭✭carrickbawn

Dont think that aib account is as good as it sounds. Its a monthly savings account that you feed in 1000 a month and after your 12000 is in the rate drops down again. Check it out.

The real world return if it was an interest bearing product is around 0.258%. See my post #8680. The Government have all the money they need, so they don't want to borrow more from us. But even with the very low chances of winning, the money has been piling in to Prize Bonds in record amounts.

That 0.258% is as good as 0.343% for anyone subject to DIRT.

With Bunq Easy Savings, you'll get 1.6% gross (interest paid monthly), covered by the deposit guarantee in the Netherlands. You don't need to take the paid current account and you can get a debit MasterCard.

  • Registered Users Posts: 395 ✭✭willycat

For raisin, there's plenty of deposit accounts that don't withold any tax so you'd simply have to declare the gross interest using the tax returns form next year, and the Revenue would deduct DIRT from it. There's some that don't withhold any, and some that don't do it if you prove that you are not tax resident in that country (tax residency cert from Revenue works).

I have part of my uninvested cash at TradeRepublic, since January, they're paying 2% AER (paid monthly!) and no withholding tax. It's grand! DM me for a Referral code (€10 cash benefit).

That AIB account is a load of smoke and mirrors (I can think of several even less complimentary terms) and is far more hassle than it is worth. AIB aren't very transparent about how they calculate interest but I'd estimate that sticking your €18k in there will get you something around €120 gross, which is €80 after DIRT.

BUNQ at 1.56% (variable) will pay you €288 gross, which is €187 after DIRT

Raisin (Younited) at 2.95% (fixed for one year) will pay you €531gross, which is €354 after DIRT. No messing with DWT, just declare your DIRT with your year end tax return. You can get a higher rate from Raisin, but it means dealing with DWT which you appear adverse to.

Somebody in Australia getting a nice financial boost from their Prize Bonds today.

First prize in over 5 years €50. The notification arrived just after I requested to cash in 2000 bonds (50% of holding) to invest in UK Premium Bonds.
