Nothing for me today. I knew there was little hope when I saw that Louth got only 42 prizes, lowest I can remember. Last week it was 67. There is a link on the site now with details of the new rates.

For Prize Bonds it clears up the doubt which was expressed on that Ask About Money link about the number of €50K prizes. There will be a €50K prize in every draw.

He has the chances of winning the once-a-week (52 times) €50k prize, the same as the once-a-month (12 times) €500k prize?

  • Registered Users Posts: 21,021 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

That would be correct. Each draw stands alone with no influence from the past and no influence on the future. If there is only one prize in a category, the odds are the same in each draw. Nothing to stop a bond winning €50K or €500K in more than one draw, but it would be beating odds of about 700 million to 1 each time.

I went to a post office Thursday last week to open a state saving account (and therefore purchased some prize bonds). I was told I would receive a letter within 5 working days but… nothing yet.

How long did it take for people who opened an account recently?

it could also come from An Post…

Nothing in August on €70k, nothing in 2023. Rate rise much appreciated but they sure took their time.

If people took their money out when rates were miniscule they may have raised them faster.

2 x €50 for me today, fourth time that's happened this quarter and fifth time this year. As ever, I remain convinced that the software that controls the draw was completely fuxked up during the changes in Feb 2021 and hasn't been right since.

Dealing with State Savings at the moment on redemption of a batch of fixed term products in anticipation of reinvesting when the new rates materialise on 1st October. They are excelling themselves, being even more inconsistent and woeful than ever in their handling of the redemptions. And that says a lot, given their historic garbage service levels.

If you want to buy for more than 1000€ of prize bonds, you can only do it by cheque. Is it correct?

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,095 ✭✭✭Trigger Happy

50 for me last week. Back on form this week with 0.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,547 ✭✭✭Hibernicis

No, State Savings have no transaction limit when purchasing that I am aware of, other than the maximum holdings of €250k or €500k. You are however limited by the maximum allowed by your bank for a debit card purchase. I have certainly purchased batches of €50k (Ulster Bank debit card) and €25k (Bank of Ireland debit card) online in the past. For some stupid reason best known to themselves AIB and PTSB have much lower debit card transaction limits.

Nothing for me on 22 September. The €50K went to Tipperary with a bond bought in mid April 2023. I posted this on 05 May:

"The newest bond to win on 06 April was BDS084912. Newest 05 May BDY454129."

    From the Nenagh Guardian:

"This week's Prize Bond Star Prize of €50,000 goes to lucky Prize Bond number BDU441183 held in County Tipperary. The lucky bond was purchased in 2023. There were over 4,785 prizes awarded in this week’s Prize Bond Draw, amounting to over €303,200."

Must be a big backlog of people cashing out. 3 weeks since i put in request and it's still pending. It says it should take 7 working days.

The last €250k of the year went to Kilkenny: BEP343203

Must have been bought this year. That's a nice return for someone :-)

Nothing at all so far this year on €50,000.

    Last win was Sept 2022.

Hoping the change in rates/prize structure from the next draw brings me some luck.😉

Quarter of a Million was won with a BEP Bond so only bought recently.

  • Registered Users Posts: 21,021 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

Bought in late July 2023. The first draw to feature BEP winners was 28 July.

Nothing for me today. September count, the same 11 million bonds BEK to BEU in each of the 5 draws. Not including that BEP €250K and a BEQ which won €1,000 and a BET and a BEK 2 x €500.

Friday 01. 75 prizes. Highest BEK 13. Lowest BES & BEU 3 each.

    Friday 08. 69. BEL 11. BET 2.

    Friday 15. 68. BET 10. BEQ 1.

    Friday 22. 64. BES 10. BEQ 2.

    Friday 29. 61. BET 10. BEQ 1.

    Highest overall BEL 39 (11,11,6,5,6). Lowest BEQ 13 (4,5,1,2,1).

    55 million bonds won 337 prizes, average per million 6.127. x 52 x €50 = €15930.91. Divided by 62.5 to get what €100K would win in a year with the same luck = €254.89, nearest to 5 x €50.

I started doing monthly counts in August 2021, 26 months completed at the 0.35% interest rate. Which should give €50 winners around 0.25%, when the money for the big prizes is taken out.

The average works out at 6.0998 winners per million bonds. That would give someone with €100K €253.75 a year in interest, if they were paying interest instead of €50 prizes. Very close to that expected 0.25% return. The highest was 6.824, lowest 5.413.

I recall starting the count because there was advice being given on the thread for people to cash in old bonds and buy new ones. Apparently because new bonds were going to win more than old ones. All of the bonds I counted were 13 weeks at the oldest, so I think that theory can definitively be knocked on the head.

My grandmother owned two prize bonds for many years. She gifted them to me in the 90s.

They were originally 5 punts each . Now they're something like 6. 25 euro each.

To date nothing has been won.

The question I'm pondering is ,if these bonds are passed down in my family indefinitely, how many years must pass and how many generations before even one prize is one ? And how many until a big prize is won? Surely eventually they must be bound by the laws of probability to win something eventually before the heat death of the universe? 😂

The frustrating thing is ..I know that decades of bad luck doesn't necessarily mean good luck is somehow owed to those particular bonds . But on the other hand they could win a number of prizes in a row ...but still I wonder will I even even win the price of a pint before I'm dead and gone . I probably have a good 30 to 50 years left 😂

As calculated by poster Duke of Marmalade on AAM in response to a remarkably similar query:

Under new rules the chances of a single PB winning are as follows:

    €75 every 1,520 years

    €500 every 740,000 years

    €1,000 every 740,000 years

    €50,000 every 15 million years

    €500,000 every 64 million years

As the proud possessor of two prize bonds, your chances are exactly double this. I’d suggest not holding your breath for that pint, you may well die of thirst.

Incidentally have you gone through the steps required to transfer the ownership of the bonds? These are not bearer bonds, and the rules of inheritance/transfer of ownership are a bit complicated. It would be awful if one of them won something after all this time and you couldn’t claim it !

  • Registered Users Posts: 21,021 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

But did they take account of those bonds being worth €6.35, instead of €6.25. They might only have to wait 63 million years for the big one.

    Are these worth investing in?

I've recently received some money that I want to get a safe return on.I'm wondering if it's worthwhile?

Are you looking for the money to be safe or are you looking for it to make a return?
