Premium bonds are in UK. Do you mean Prize Bonds?

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,787 ✭✭✭The Continental Op

You'll have to put up with it a lot of people from the UK can't get around saying Prize bonds in Ireland.

Wake me up when it's all over.

Yes, Prize Bonds for Rep. Of Ireland.

  • Registered Users Posts: 687 ✭✭✭POBox19

In the UK a person of 16 and over can manage their own NS&I account for Premium Bonds and other savings products.

For anyone that is interested, today’s results appeared on the tracker promptly at 12:30. The results weren’t updated on the State Savings Online website until 12:39 and the email notifications were sent out at 12:40.

    State Savings progressing backwards.

    €75 for me today.

I am now registered for State Savings. Email came at 12:49, and I see the one on the 21st came at 12:48.

    Happy New Year to all.

€150 for me today, so a nice end to the year.

Twelve month comparison over the last six years. My holding has increased during that time.

    2018 (Jan-Dec) - 12x€50 = €600

    2019 (Jan-Dec) - 20x€50 = €1,000

    2020 (Jan-Dec) - 24x€50 = €1,200

    2021 (Jan-Dec) - 6x€50 = €300

    2022 (Jan-Dec) - 15x€50 = €750

    2023 (Jan-Dec) - 20x€50 and 13x€75 = €1,975

Impact of the new rates and prize structure coming through.

Interesting to see how much it varies. I have a number of different batches of bonds. One 50k batch won €125 (1x€50 and 1x€75) in 2023, while another €50k batch won €375 (6x€50 and 1x€75), exactly three times as much.

Nothing again - here's to a more prosperous 2024. My holding is decreasing all the time to counteract lesser personal income so maybe it's to be expected.

You've had a great end to the year Hibernicis!

December count, the same 10 million bonds BFA to BFJ in each of the 5 draws. Not including 1 x €500 BFI and 1 x €1,000 BFH won by these bonds.

Friday 01. 132 wins. Highest BFD 23. Lowest BFJ 9.

    Friday 08. 101. BFA & BFF 12 each. BFD 6.

    Friday 15. 122. BFI 18. BFC 6.

    Thursday 21. 135. BFI 17. BFG 9.

    Friday 29. 118. BFE 17. BFB 7.

Highest overall BFI 75 (15,10,18,17,15). Lowest BFJ 51 (9,11,10,13,8). Notice how variable it can be from the BFD bonds.

    50 million bonds won 608 prizes, average per million 12.16. x 52 x €75 = €47,424. Divided by 62.5 to get what €100K would win in a year with the same luck equals €758.78. Nearest to 10 x €75.

    October €803.40, November €725.40, December €758.78, average €762.52.

    Hi All,

Considering to invest in bonds for the very first time. Have a stupid question:

What happens if bonds are stolen from home/office/elsewhere? If registered in your name, do you get replacement? Or is it covered by some insurance?

    Thanks!

  • Registered Users Posts: 21,021 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

It never happened to me, or as far as I know anyone else on the thread. Get familiar with the State Savings / Prize Bonds websites and request more information if you need it. These days you do not need possession of the physical bonds to cash them in, and that makes the process about lost/stolen different to some other State Savings products. Obviously you would alert the Gardai, and it would be good practice to alert State Savings. The criminal would have to attempt a second crime to get the value of the bonds.

Something which will happen to you is death. And for some people unfortunately before that impairment, leading to inability to manage financial affairs. And possibly financial abuse by family members or others. Make provision for those in your finances, and don't worry about a robbery.

I got a notice a number of years ago that I couldn't continue to hold my Premium Bond as I did not have a UK bank account. I have remembered now that I never followed up on this ....

I got notification email of a win today but have to wait til lunchtime tomorrow as website is 'down' to find out how much.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,547 ✭✭✭Hibernicis

@cobham Like you I received a e-mail notification and then discovered that the website is unavailable yet again. The tracker is still working and is online so if you are registered for that you can check there. If the main website isn’t back shortly then it wont be available until Monday as State Savings don’t do weekends.

€150 for me today, so a nice start to the year.

  • Registered Users Posts: 804 ✭✭✭cobham

What /where is the tracker? Is it an app on phone?

I see now they are proposing to remove the tracker option this year. I shall just have to be patient, adds to the excitement, delayed gratification etc 😁

Prize Bond Certificates are not bearer instruments and have no intrinsic value. Therefore possession of the certificate does not confer ownership or entitlement to redeem and receive the proceeds. That said, if your thief was devious enough, she/he could submit a repayment form with your name and address and her/his IBAN and the certificate/s, and there is a reasonable possibility that the repayment would be processed. You would receive a letter telling you that the bonds had been repaid, but she/he would have your money. The obvious way around this as dxhound2005 said is to register for an online account and either destroy the paper certificates or keep them stored securely.

    Nothing for me today.

The number of €75 prizes in the January 2024 draws is 9,323, down from 9,332 in December 2023. The newest bond to win on 01 December 2023 was BFK758877, newest 05 January 2024 BFQ188557. Sales of around €33.935 million, compared to €41.550 million in December 2022.

The newest bond to win on 06 January 2023 was BCQ456969, newest 05 January 2024 BFQ188557. Estimated sales in 2023 of €485,823 million, compared to actual sales in 2022 of €615,704 million.

With the ever increasing reliance being placed on the State Savings Online website, these outages are unacceptable. Can I suggest to the regulars on here that we keep tabs on the frequency of “unavailable” message. I believe that it was offline on seven or eight occasions last year, including a number of full weekends. A simple message here stating that it is offline (with from and to times if possible) would be great as it would allow outages/availability to be summarised as the year progressed.

An alternative would be to have a Dail question asked in the form “Could the Minister provide a list of all State Savings Online outages/downtime in the years from 2020 to 2023, showing the duration of each outage and the total downtime each year, and the actions being taken to improve the availability of the website and make a statement on the matter”

    Hi,

Is it recommended to invest jointly or separately from registering on the website, buying, selling, receiving prize and record perspective. I heard it takes some time to be up and running on the website. Thanks.

  • Registered Users Posts: 626 ✭✭✭lordleitrim

Same for me on similar holdings and gap since last win. Finally my first €75 win. Nice start to the year!

  • Registered Users Posts: 21,021 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

It took about 3 weeks for me to get registered for State Savings. That was including the Christmas period. Even if it took a bit longer, that shouldn't really be a consideration, if it is going to be a long term investment. If it is only short term I wouldn't bother registering. Any decision about joint investments is up to people themselves.

Just wondering where you get all these stats from, you are very knowledgeable with all this information , is it available on a website ?

Also would you know if there is a calculation to determine the odds of winning €75 based on x amount of holding in Irish Prize Bonds ?

dxhound2005 puts a lot of work into the stats he produces for which we are all very grateful.

User DukeOfMarmalade on askaboutmoney.com published a spreadsheet some time back which allows you to input your holdings and see the chances is a win. You can download it here https://www.askaboutmoney.com/threads/prize-bonds-are-looking-attractive-alternatives-to-deposits.182819/page-36#post-1840571

All on the website. Click on map when you go into the results. If x amount is €100K the odds are per that monthly count I do, 10 x €75 in a year. But that is based on the luck enjoyed by 50 million bonds worth over €312 million.

Any individual amount is going to be too small to guarantee anything. I have a block of €10K which has not won anything since June 2018.
