    3. The Pope (in general not a specific one)
    4. Michael Jackson
    5. Pele

    Anyone disagree?

The question is 'ever', not in our lifetime. So the list will largely consist of religious figures, as they will have been known about for hundreds of years, in some cases millennia.

People like Michael Jackson and Pele are just known about to some people in the west in recent years.

The list in my opinion would be

    1. Jesus Christ.
    2. The Virgin Mary
    3. St Joseph
    4. Simon Peter
    5. St. John.

Given that there's what 1 billion people in india, and 2 billion in China alone, not to mention all the other countries in Asia.

Compare that to the paltry 700 million in all of europe and north america.

jesus may be in the top 10 perhaps. Mao is probably up there in the top five. Ghandi maybe. Or the Dali lama? there's film stars in india with fan bases larger than the entire population of europe and we've never even heard of them.

I doubt the pope would make the list. Or pele. Or hitler.

    Paris Hilton?
    Brian Cowen?
    Francis Black?
    Paul McShane?
    Ann Doyle?

Taking everything into account, communication capabilities, education, world population distribution, politics and for how many generations of the world's population the person has been famous, with the possible exceptions of Jesus Christ, Mohammed and Buddha the most famous person in the world ever is almost certainly Genghis Khan.

Remember reading or watching something a while ago that said Paris Hilton and Jesus were the number 1 and 2 most searched names on Google, which is scary, and also funny because they're both really fake!

Buddha would have to be high on that list. And he was around 600 years before jesus so had a lot longer to get known.

Yeah, in the 600 years before Jesus he would have gotten way more hits on the internet.

Thank you for stating the obvious. I fail to see what this has to do with MJ though.

MJ has fans on every single continent. That aside, fans or not i'm quite sure that there are more people who know of him than those who do not.

That would be my own top ten and in no particular order, But if i was to be realistic about it i think the carpenter from Nazareth who preached turning the other cheek nearly two thousand years before Gandhi would top the list.
