I decided to sort out my CAO, just to get it over and done with :). So as i went onto it I decided to look into other courses just incase my 1st choice (Arts choosing languages in NUIG) didn't quite pan out. I discovered an entirely better course for me ('Applied Languages' which has more qualifications entailed). As in it is perfect. But the college providing it (UL) is not the college I want to attend. Adding to that, the points are ~+100 more than the one in NUIG. It's possible that I will get the points required for the course in UL. So question, is what should I do!?
I'm getting positive responses from students attending both colleges...

DCU has an applied languages course too as another back up :)

Either Marine & Freshwater Biology in GMIT or Wildlife Biology in Tralee IT.
If, by some strange twist of fate, I get over 370 points, either Environmental & Earth System Science at UCC or Undenominated Science at NUIG.

The bottom line is, I will end up studying botany and zoology one way or another.

Gratifying to see that not many people are applying for science courses. Means the points might actually drop. Keep not applying, please.

Yeah I applied on Sunday haven't gotten a later or anything. I'm not sure how many , I think a good few I heard it's really popular. When did you apply?

About two months ago. I didnt apply early because I knew I wasn't going to get what I wanted this year around. I just applied early to get in front of the waiting list.

By the looks of it, they arent going to start doing interviews until maybe late summer.

Let me know if you hear anything back from them. I will do the same.

I should have applied earlier, I always said I'd never repeat as I thought you'd have to go back to school for it. I should've done more highers. I don't think they interview til August. It says on the site they take place in mid august probably after the LC results.
Yeah I'll let you know if I hear anything.

Yeah they judge you on your result whether you actually need to repeat.

So if I get 450 points this year and secure my 3rd - 10th choice, They will properly tell me to **** off.

aw I don't even know if I'll reach 300. I didn't do enough honours with the subject choices. 3 isn't enough I needed at least 4/5. They might see how much you want it in the interview.

If you desperately want to do a specific course at third level but you didnt get the points. And you explain to them why exactly you want enroll on the course. There should be no reason why they wont enroll you.

Theres an advert on their repeat LC site of a girl who achieved 490 or something the first time and then she repeated there and came out with over 500. So maybe they will accept my application.

My problem was I took on too many subjects. They were all of the biggest theory subjects on the course too including History, Geography, Business Economics, Higher English, Higher Spanish, Ord Irish and Ord Maths.

If I only score a D in maths well then I will have to repeat there. They provide specialist maths support aswell for struggling students. There were on average nearly 70-80 in my class in maths this year. Teacher got absolute no time to correct HW or help me individually.

They'll probably accept you if they accepted her. Yeah that's a lot of theory subjects. How did you have a class with 70-80 people? If I hadn't dropped to ordinary english an kept my original 4 honours biology, english, geography, business then I dropped for english an had to change my options an do engineering the geography teacher wasn't good an can't do art.

I think its cause some people call it "Mary Dry" :P (no offence Mary I peeps)

I have Business in DCU also with the idea of a postgrad too, I heard a post grad is very expensive though?

Some postgrads cost a bomb but look into Scotland for primary school teaching they pay for your course and get you a job takes two years to do but one year is learning and placement the second year is working in a school. But after the two years you can apply for primary school jobs in Uk or Ireland

    Medicine in TCD..
But failing that (which I defiantly will), science in UCD or NUIG.

hmm.... why would you go from medicine in TCD to science in NUIG...UCD would be fine but would the science course in TCD not be better? My advice, don't go to NUIG for the science course cause it seems like veryone just goes there and does either that or Arts if they have no idea what to do....

I went to the Institute. You really should of kept honors English the paper was a breeze this year in my opinion. Well I had done over 2000 hours of preparation for it. But it was easier than the mocks.

Just repeat your 4 honors next year. You should find it alot easier to do well in them considering if you finished the course in previous years. You might even get more competent teachers in Rathmines.

My only concern is that there is a study hall in Rathmines which is open to at least 20:00 PM everyday.

Take an online career interest test. Thats what my school offered me. You answer about 500 relevant questions and it anaylises your career options and then presents a percentage of the industries you are suited to.

    I came out at 100 percent Geography, 100 % Modern Languages. 80 % Business, 70 % Law 70 %

My career no-nos were Medicine at 0 %, and engineering at 10 %.

I put all of the courses I scored well in on my CAO. Its the best way to fill out a CAO in my opinion.

Heres a link to one here. https://update.ucas.co.uk/cgi-bin/hsrun.hse/Stamford/ucas_reg/ucas_reg.hjx;start=ucas_reg.HspersonalDetails.run

    BIS in ucc hopefully

I've heard that's a very good course, similar to MSISS in Trinity which I want to do. Guaranteed employment out of it too I'd guess.

Yeah i've heard the same but apparently a huge drop out / Failure rate. I barely went to school during leaving cert, god only knows what'll happen in college. I could be one of those percentages! :p

The only reason I want to go to TCD for medicine is because they do the 5 year course and the others do a 6 year course.. TCD also have a massive amount of practical training, you're out on the wards before you've even finished your second year :D

I want to do Pharmacology through science (for many reasons), and UCD and NUIG are the only two in the country that offer that..
That's also not a great reason not to go to NUIG :p
In all likelyhood I'll end up in science in UCD though, NUIG is just a (very) nice backup.
So for others, yeah TCD might have a better science course, but what's the point in going there if they don't even offer the subject I want to study? :p

same with MSISS. In last year's exams, 86% of the class failed at least one of their exams!

The points on all these technical courses have dropped big time. MSISS was 540 about ten years ago, it's now 380 and the standard hasn't dropped.
