    RIP

I admire the man for openly saying that we were hoodwinked into accepting the bailout. Condolences to his family.

I've never seen anything posistive spoken about him until this thread and even then, they were all vague remarks.

No you are definately wrong there. Have often heard commentators speak highly of him before today and before his illness.

That's not the point. Even if they did think he did a shiit job, they shouldn't be bad mouthing him after he just died. Human respect man.

They made a comment on their percpetion of the man and his actions, followed by expressing their condolences. The act of expressing condolences is not a sign of respect?

He has not been insulted by anyone in this thread.

    I said "I've never," not "there's never."

RIP. He had the misfortune of following the worst finance minister in the history of the state and serving under the worst Taoiseach in the history of the state. It cost him his reputation and his health.

A nice guy like his father, never complained just got on with a job that maybe in hindsight he would have been better off not taking for health reasons, RIP.

    RIP Brian Lenihan

I'm not going to pretend that I agreed with a lot of what he did, but when he was diagnosed in 2009, the easier option would have been to resign, but the fact that he persevered with his work and performed his duties to the best of his abilities until the fall of the government earned him a hell of a lot of respect in my eyes.

Condolences to his family and friends.

Most people would admit (even those who adhere to the "he screwed the country" mantra) that he was an extremely able politician.
We are not,as a country, over-endowed with able politicians. For that reason this is a very sad day for Ireland.

R.I.P a great finance minister who only had the common people of Ireland at heart at all times. A sad day.

I feel sorry for the family, but I am not the kind that will forget everything only because someone has died.

My thoughts are just as equally with the dozens of people who haven taken their lives, cause their life savings were wiped out or they've been burdened with so much debt, that suicide seemed the easier option to them.

What Brian and his mates did, has caused untold hurt and pain to the country and many of its family, real pain and hurt, not Monopoly money.

My sympathies for the family, but I won't shed a tear.

Sad News, was one of the few FF politicians who came across favorably in recent years and was the only one re-elected in Dublin for a reason. Massive respect for continuing in his job through such adversity, had no idea his condition was so serious. :(

Very sad day. I had to read the thread title twice.

    Thoughts are with his family.

It's really scary how fast someone can succumb to cancer. It doesn't seen too long ago since he announced that he was diagnosed with cancer in January 2010.

    Again, R.I.P.

Condolences to his family and friends.
It must have been very tough for him to work through the trouble we are in financially when his health was very poor. He always look very weak while still as minister and i think it was a poor decision for him to stay on in his position considering the pressure and stress he was under.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,673 ✭✭✭AudreyHepburn

First the country was already in a shambles by the time he got there and the fact that he stayed on despite his illness shows he was serious about his job.

Second I would reckon most of the people posting here have been hit by the recession but we are not so selfish as to think we are worse off than this 52 year old man who has died after a horrible illness or his young family left behind.

A little more respect and genuine sympathy and compassion would not kill you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 361 ✭✭silverspoon

I'm surprised at how sad I am to hear the news. Poor man. I think that today politics should be set aside, time enough for it.

    RIP.

I didnt actually know he had cancer until a few months ago. I always liked him, thought he did the best he could with a bad situation. It made me like him more that he chose to spend his time doing the stressful job he did when he knew he was battling a terminal illness. RIP.

    R.I.P. Brian.
Although I did'nt agree with alot of his decisions , IMO he did what he believed was right thing to do.

People are already trying to re-write history. What he did was unforgivable TBH. RIP Brian, hope the next world is better for you.

What did he do bar try to change the mess he thrown head first into?

    A very sad day,

He was one of the few politicians with a bit of credibility, worked hard for his country, even through a tough illness. A true Irishman.

Very likeable man, I will always hold a great respect for him

    Rest In Peace Mr. Lenihan.

very sad RIP one of the very few capable politicians from the last dismal government who will be actually missed.

This is a tragic loss for his family. Pancreatic cancer is aggressive and takes many a young life. Before I say anything about Lenihan's stint as Finance Minister, I would like to say that in his role as Minister for Justice he brought a much needed quiet dignity to the role that stood out starkly against the self publicising circus McDowell had turned it into.

His time as Minister for Finance was was not a successful one and he made questionable decisions under the advice of the very people who created the problems in the first place. However theirs was considered the perceived wisdom at the time and no other Minister in the house would have behaved differently, such is the way of Irish politics. The fact that he stayed on in his role when he knew he was dying speaks volumes about the man's commitment to his job. Every other FF rat was desperately looking for the nearest fire escape or slightly ajar window once trouble reared it's head but Lenihan, questionable decisions and all, believed if he just hung on, he could help. I admire that.

For those of you who are using this thread as an opportunity to have a go, I would like to remind you that this is an RIP thread. With that in mind I will leave my final words just so.

    Brian Lenihan RIP.

RIP. I'm not surprised that there are dissenting comments even in the day of his death on this forum. There were even comments made on the day it broke that he had cancer with some almost happy that this had happened to him.

    RIP Brian Lenihan,

Always came across as a decent , personable guy, he was brave to fight for his seat in the recent general election and to win it as well when so many in FF took the easy option and retired. respect for that

WTF is wrong with some people ?

This thread is titled "Brian Lenihan RIP" . . Not "discuss Brian Lenihan's tenure as Minister for Finance" . .

Would people write negative Sh*t in a book of condolences ? I think this is one kind of thread that people should just leave the keyboard alone if they have nothing nice to say . .

Out of respect this thread should be locked.
A man died and left a young family behind, regardless of what your impressions of that man were, he was taken by a vile disease and it is a sad day for many people.

    Now hang on there.

He was a key member of the worst government in the history of the state so personal criticism was inevitable.

But everybody also knew he was better than the rest and had huge integrity...unlike the others.

    RIP Brian.

Surely backed up by the fact he was the only FF TD to get a seat in Dublin in the last election.

A very likeable, intelligent, approachable man. Had great time for him in fairness.

    RIP.

I don't entirely agree with this, I think people shouldn't be writing negative things about him because its entirely unjust and unwarranted be he dead or alive. He did a fine job with what was available to him and was one of the few in the last government who did.
Some people could do with being more rational and less blinded by FF hatred.
