There was a lot of talk in the e3 thread about the 'hardcore gamer'. What i would like to know is what do you guys think a hardcore gamer is. For me its not someone who plays COD religiously and pre-orders the next one straight away or finishes fallout 3 a few times. I think a hardcore gamer is a retro gamer and is more interested in collecting some random japanese rpg on the snes than playing gears of war 3 online all night.

Anyone with an intense interest in games across multiple platforms and across many genres. Definitely not some one that only plays the latest 'The Shootering 3: The Browning'.

I suppose you don't collect 'retro' games yourself OP.

"OMFG xb0x rules all you ps3 gays can suck d1ck when Gears 3 comes out and hal04 iz going to be 3pic!"

^ thats a self proclaimed "hardcore gamer", they're usually anything but. people who own more than one console and dont play only fps or driving games. actively seek out indy/retro games and take a genuine interest in the industry are what I'd call hardcore gamers. I dont really like the label "hardcore gamer" myself, it suggests someone who lives in his parents basements and masturbates like a lunatic. I'm a gamer, plain and simple.

nah, although watching one try to play a game on a joypad and fumble with it like a 16 year old trying to undo his first brastrap makes me chuckle :pac:

someone who has no life ....

Someone who has a respectable level of knowledge of video games and partakes in it as a hobby on a regular basis, as opposed to a 'casual' gamer who'd only pick up a game to kill an hour or two less frequently than a 'hardcore' one would.

I don't agree op. There are retro gamers, but that does not make them hardcore.

I would call anyone a hardcore gamer who enjoys gaming and does not sticks to one game for the rest of the life or the next, full game price, dlc.

I hate to agree with pc thing. You can't be a hardcore gamer and do not play on pc atleast part time.

I would not consider myself hardcore gamer. Just a fella who spends way too much time I front of the screens.

A person who willingly dedicates a fair amount of time, money, and effort into video games, and simply enjoys the experience because of this. Someone who really has a passion for it.

I'd consider myself a hardcore gamer, I spend a lot of hours playing and have quite a collection. This doesn't make me a better or worse player than the next guy though. I don't believe that seeking old or retro games makes someone a hardcore gamer, more a hardcore collector. I seek out games for the Snes, Megadrive, PS1, and Gameboy, becuase I have grown up with these consoles. I wouldn't, however, actively look for classic Dreamcast or Commedor 64 games (for example), because they had no impact on me growing up even though they may sport some stunning games.

The indy argument gets my goat a bit though. It resembles the Heavy Metal arguments of the same nature. Many people believe that real metal heads have to listen to bands that nobody else has heard of, and that mainstream metal bands are awful. Personally, I don't think that should effect the credibility of how 'hardcore' someone is. I'd listen to and love bands that the next guy might never of heard of, yet I'd still be a huge fan of household names like Iron Maiden or Metallica. I think it's the same with games. You could easily be a hardcore gamer, yet have never played the lesser known games.

Someone who engages in rampant sex while playing videogames.

It a stupid term. Along with 'casual gamer'. Every time I hear either I cringe.

I'm really into my videogames. Have been for 20 years now. About 50 consoles and jesus, quite possibly 1000 games and an atomiswave candy cabinet.

Do I call myself a hardcore gamer? **** no. Why? Because the day I take anything seriously enough to use the term 'hardcore' is the day I feel like my hobby has turned me into a complete moron.

Harecore me arse. (no, not literally)

    This ^

I hate hardcore and casual terms. Though this may be due to WoW where they have a lot of conflict.

    No.

A proper hardcore wouldn't socialise with A.I. or online folk.

To me a hardcore gamer is someone who plays a good variety of genres over different platforms.

I reckon a lot people think that hardcore gamers are people who have a hatred for the Wii.

There is not going to be one definition to fit all. The term hardcore gamer is the gaming equivalent of a film buff or music nerd, and much like them individuals will have a preferences for different genres and aspects that attract them. So in each you'll have different subspecies's e.g. collectors, audiophiles, walking encyclopaedias, fanboys etc,.

I have an eyefinity crossfire PC, an Xbox 360 and a PS3 hooked up to a 47" TV and surround speakers and I purchase on average 15 full price games a year, plus many more smaller indie games and discounted games. I've played PC games since Windows 3.1 and owned at least one console every generation since the NES. I play many genres but I'm not particularly keen on sports games (excluding racing games), beat-em-ups, JRPGs or retro titles.

Pretty sure he was refering to the hardcore/casual players in wow, not that people who play WoW or CoD think your not hardcore unless you do aswel.

I don't really have anything against the term "Hardcore gamer". I just see it as someone who plays games a lot.... you don't really have to be a gaming 'enthusiast' tho... I wouldn't consider someone who plays WoW exclusively as a gaming enthusiast thats for sure.

You don't have to be a PC gamer either.. their are only a handful of PC only games worth talking about these days ffs.

Hardcore gamer is someone who views gaming as an active hobby they regularly participate in, rather than seeing games simply as another form of entertainment to consume.

A casual gamer is someone who plays games simply as occasional pass time, the same as they would occasionally go to the cinema or a concert.

I think if you regularly read about games, anticipate releases, buy a wide selection of games, are knowledgeable about the game industry (ie what publisher/developer made what game, what new release is coming out, what has the developer done before the game you just bought), etc you are hardcore.

If the extend of your gaming knowledge comes from a preview in Nuts or Loaded, you are a casual gamer. If you like CoD but scratch yer head in ignorance when someone asks you what did you think of Infinity Ward suing Activision, then you are a casual gamer.

I reckon a lot people think that hardcore gamers are people who have a hatred for the Wii.

The funny thing about this is the Wii has a crap load of obscure titles which to be are far more 'hardcore' than any generic top 10 chart hit FPS games.

Just try Sin and Punishment Successor of the Skies for example.

That post was made in relation to general opinions I've heard from people and not directed toward any post in particular. I probably should have worded it better.

What if someone got up every morning and did nothing but play Wii games until going to bed at night. In your definition then they would be a hardcore gamer.

However to most people who would consider themselves hardcore gamers he's a casual gamer as he plays a 'casual console'.

It's a stupid non discript term. That's all really. I'll also throw 'core gamer' in with that too. FFS. It's as bad as HR 'going forward, we'll drill down into this and then touch base later' speak.

Well my definition is what it is... If someone plays wii all day then they are as much a hardcore gamer as someone who plays wow all day... your the one considering the wii a casual console, not me. Besides... anyone that can play wii all day has to be hardcore... because i'd be fuucking knackered :D

Hardcore to me = Someone who plays computer games a lot
Casual to me = Someone who plays computer games on occasion

Its just a word used on forums... i wouldn't go out asking my mates are they hardcore or casual gamers. Thats just sad.

I think your getting the whole casual/hardcore gamer thing mixed up with elitists....
