Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Salt lick for orf

Often heard of people putting out salt licks for lambs with orf, that it helps dry up the scabs. Have 5 lambs with it at the moment. Question is, where do I get a salt lick? Or what type of salt am I looking for, or more particularly, not looking for. Never seen salt in bucket or block form around here, just the bagged stuff for de-icing footpaths.

Yeah, I know, there's no cure, I just want to help it along a little if I can, hate the sight of it.

    Why don't you vaccinate?

Not enough of a problem for me to justify the cost and work involved, they don't all get it, and of those that get it not all are bad with it. Once scabivax vaccination is started it's an annual thing I'm told.

There were problems getting the vaccine this year also, in the UK at least, not sure about here.

Agreed it won't make any improvement.

The other thing to consider is whether a lick will make the problem worse, as the lick blocks will be an excellent way to spread the infection. Orf virus is really hardy and lives in scabs for months/years.

I think it survives in the soil for 2 to 3 years in certain conditions, not just for orf but also worm resistance, we try to practice reverse rotation as much as possible.. ie fields that were grazed first this year with sheep, wont' be grazed early next year
