Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. England escaped with a point, absolutely woeful. Ukraine lack a finisher. That about sums up their game.

    77' Luxembourg 1 - 1 N.Ireland

Ended 3-2 to the home side!

    Ukraine 0 - 0 England

Roy will be happy with that, Kyle Walker was utter pants bar one moment in attack and one in defence.

Depressing as it is the sides in second place at the moment in Europe(results against bottom side in groups A-H not counted)
    Greece P7 Pts 16 GD +4
    France. 7 14+6
    Iceland 7 13+1

    Portugal 6 11+3
    Croatia 6 11+3
    Sweden 6 11+3
    Hungary 6 11+1

Looks like the runners up in group 2 might not make it, we can always shout for Iceland as they are only one letter off.

Mexico have the advantage of being home to Panama.

If they don't score early, it won't be an advantage. It hasn't been an advantage this whole campaign.

Mexico failing to make it would be stunning.

Not in a good way though, you need US and Mexico there for the good of the tournament.

    Why?

I would like to see Honduras in it.

They have been improving steadily and have a couple of premier league players in their team, also got the Mexican manager sacked at the weekend after beating them in Mexico

Yep, they've only won one game so atm they don't deserve to get through, even finishing 4th in a 6 game group is terrible stuff, I'd prefer NZ to get through after their performances in the last WC.

Does David Suazo still play for them?
Vaugely remember them in SA, never been a huge fan of the likes of them & Costa Rica tbh. Just never seen much of an improvement to them

No, he's retired. Honduras have a bit of quality though, I'd put them third behind the US and Mexico in overall talent despite Costa Rica's recent form. They won't scare anyone in Brazil, but they could hang on for a result. They have a decent amount of experience for a CONCACAF side, especially since they made it to SA. I wish them the best.

I don't like Costa Rica though. Don't like the way they play. They do have a 21-year-old striker who can cause trouble, Joel Campbell. Bryan Ruiz has his moments. But other than that, I don't rate them. Especially not away from home.

Can someone explain the Cape Verde situation?

    From what I've gotten:
They had a player sent off and suspended for four matches.
Said match was later written off and forfeited.
They played three competitive and one friendly match since, I.E. four matches.
The player in question is not listed as having been sent off, due to the forfeit.
The player in question was also (according to CV) not listed as suspended for the match by FIFA.

Sounds to me like FIFA made a balls of it and are punishing Cape Verde anyway.

I know little more than you (thanks for the info btw) but the friendly game wouldn't count for suspension purposes so I hope this isn't the main thrust of their appeal.

(If friendlies counted we'd all be organising them at short notice to get our players cleared).

I was thinking the same, but CV say FIFA didn't have him listed as suspended for the game. The forfeit also means the red card doesn't exist anymore, but the suspension does?

Either way, someone screwed up somewhere along the way. From what I've read, it seems like it was FIFA due to the final two points in my previous post. It seems like CV are going to appeal so they obviously feel they are in the right.

Ironic too that the red card came as a result of a tackle on the ineligable player which led to the forfeit.

I think this is standard practise, from memory red cards in abandoned matches still count (its kind of like an abandoned match).

I dunno - looks to be an element of chancing the arm.
Like you know XXX has a 4 game suspension so you don't play him in the next 3 qualifiers (and presumably no point in playing him in a friendly thats prep for those qualifiers).
Then someone in your admin staff notices he's no longer on the CAF/FIFA suspension webpage or whatever, surely you seek clarification at this stage rather than going ahead and playing him?

Yeah, a match was abandoned in the football league recently and the red card issued still stood.

Some game between Colombia and Chile. The Chileans led 3-0 away from home only to end up drawing the game 3-3. Colombia are now through to the World Cup; if Chile had held on for the win then both teams would have gone through.

Great 1-0 win for Ecuador over Uruguay too. It means Ecuador, Chile and Uruguay will scrap it out for the two final automatic places.

    3. Ecuador - 25 pts - +5
    = Chile
    25 pts - +3
    5. Uruguay -- 22 pts - -1

The 5th placed team goes into the play-off against Jordan (which you'd expect the South American team to win).

The last set of fixtures are quite tasty though:

    Chile vs Ecuador
    Uruguay vs Argentina

Looks like Uruguay have to hope that Ecuador can beat Chile by a few goals and then for themselves to beat Argentina by a few goals. Don't like their chances. Chile and Ecuador can both go through automatically with a draw.

I'd still expect all three to make it regardless of what happens. I hope Chile get there as they are one of the most exciting sides to watch.

Spain beat Belarus tonight 2-1. Goals from Xavi (a stunning strike on the volley) and Negredo (a typically flowing Spanish move featuring a delightful back heel from Iniesta, an inch perfect cross via Ramos and a diving header courtesy of the beast from Vallecas). Interestingly Del Bosque opted to go to a 3 at the back at half time and the gamble paid off with 2 goals in the second half. The World and European Champions are a point away from confirming their place in Brazil.

Hilarious stuff to watch live on Sky tbh. The bias and (some justified) outrage at the referee while they got played off the pitch was strangely cathartic.

Bendtner scored twice for the Danes tonight in a 2-2 draw against Italy, who equalised in the last minute through Aqualani. Juve must be wondering why Bendtner could never do that when they had him on loan last season.

Stupid question alert, how is it that the Czech Republic are definitely out? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_FIFA_World_Cup_qualification_–_UEFA_Group_B

EDIT: Never mind, they have 6 points leaving aside the results against the bottom team so leaving that out the most they can get is 9 which already isn't enough. Funny how things work out.

Yeah some maths whiz has been busy on wiki updating the second place table with all the permutations. Must be using some software program.

Seem to remember UEFA getting criticism for the way they work out the second place table, with 8 out of 9 teams making the play-offs, but to be honest I can't think of a better way.

And it's likely to be the exact same format for the 2018 World Cup, as Gibraltar will be included in the qualification, essentially taking the spot vacated by the hosts Russia (Unless Kosovo get their FIFA membership, but that's looking unlikely anytime soon).

Ecuador vs Chile both teams need a draw to qualify I wonder what the result will be? Roughly 4/6 with Betfair easy money.

The African play-offs are on BT at the minute. Cote D`ivoire 1-0 up against Senegal already.
