The impact of having to play in Mile High City cannot be underestimated. It's a big advantage for the likes of the Denver Nuggets in the NBA, although they are very good home and on the road this season, teams travelling there have struggled even when the Nuggets weren't all that great back in the day.

Whilst the climate there undoubtedly has an effect on both players and the ball, one has to factor in though that the "home" team in this instance are not really a home team either. They're also a collection far-flung players assembling outside Denver for the game, rather than being individuals who live their or play there frequently.

    ==

Also (and something unrelated to your point) at a glance one could imagine these wintery conditions favouring the US team but, when I checked, it turned out that 9 of the Costa Rica XI play in Europe (and 3 of that actually play in Norway.). I imagine they've nearly all experienced inclement playing conditions in their time too.

New Zealand now play the winner of the Asian playoff to go to Brazil.

New Zealand now play the winner of the Asian playoff to go to Brazil.

NZ willl play the CONCACAF 4th place team, which I suspect could probably be a tougher tie for NZ than playing an AFC counterpart.

AFC 5th place has to play CONMEBOL 5th (which is only ever going to go one way imho).

Jordan leading Japan 1-0 at half time.
Japan need to at least draw to be the first qualifier for Brazil 2014 (other than Brazil of course).

    2-1 now, Kagawa scored.

    And Japan missed a peno.

Big win for Korea earlier at home against Qatar. Looked like it was heading for a 1-1 draw before Heung-min Son scored in the 96th minute! Puts them in position to all but confirm their place at WC2014 with a win over Lebanon in June.

The game against Iran two weeks after that will be huge if Iran beat Qatar and SK fail to beat Lebanon in the next games.

FT in the Jordan-Japan game (2-1)

Lot of time for Endo but playing J2 players is stupid.

Anyway, AFAIK Youtube streams aren't illegal. Portugal game is on if anyone is bored/interested - http://www.youtube.com/user/Videosport/featured?v=K0ZD7XMFFpg

    Ronaldo suspended.

    Starting XI:
    Rui Patrício
    Pepe
    Bruno Alves
    Fábio Coentrão
    João Pereira
    Raul Meireles
    Danny
    Miguel Veloso

    Hélder Postiga

What's the story weather wise on Northern Ireland v Israel? Was gutted Israel couldn't hold on to beat Portugal last week.

People were mentioning the J2 thing on twitter earlier but it's not a big deal. There were only 3 home based players in the XI, Maeda from Jubilo (J1) and Konno & Endo from Gamba (J2). Konno has been a regular for years and remained so when he was relegated with Tokyo. Endo is Endo.

Should have enough quality in that starting XI to beat Jordan, even without Honda & Nagatomo.

Azerbaijan is a tough place to go to and get a win to be fair. Portugal created a lot of chances but as per usual with them, wasted the majority. Azerbaijan keeper played a blinder too going on the first half which I only saw. Was a good result after the Israel game.

A great victory, a really great victory tonight for Spain. Facing all sorts of scrutiny in Spain following back to back draws against France and, most disappointingly of all, Finland. Leading to the players having to defend their famed philosophy, tonight was the perfect answer to those questions.

Spain were really terrific in possession tonight, much less ponderous than they were in the home game against France or the game against Finland, tonight there was a real purpose about their play, a sharpness and some really well put together moves. In particular Xavi Hernandez was outstanding in the centre of the pitch, along with Alonso, Busquets and Iniesta, as too were Monreal and Pedro and Navas really is a game changer when he comes on. Valdes produced some really top drawer saves, showing again that when called upon he is one of the best goalkeepers around.

Overall the game in Paris tonight was superb, a really exciting, technically brilliant and pulsating game. A real joy to watch and even after France went down to 10 men they still looked threatening. It's also great to see France playing the likes of Varane and Pogba who could be huge players in the future for them. Despite losing 1-0 France were quite impressive tonight.

It's another big win for Spain, it puts them in control of group i, it's another show of defiance to the naysayers and it's yet another example of the attitude and quality of this special group of players, going to Paris under immense pressure, Spain once again produce the goods and leave victorious. A joy to behold.
