Geniuses, I need your help :-)

Ok, well, I'm looking to build a gaming rig as a little side project over the summer. I've no real restrictions, but I would like to keep it sub 1000e. 1k would be the highest, and would like it to be a bit less if possible :) I don't need it to be the MOST powerful gaming computer EVARR, but I would like it to run modern games easily enough, (especially Minecraft on max settings), but would like solid perforamnce out of games like CoD and BFBC!

Anyways, what's everyone's preference on places to buy parts? I've seen hardwareversand.de has been popular. They are reliable? And do you really save all that much money when compared to buying the parts locally in Ireland?

So, enough of my ramblings, this is what I have so far:

    CPU - Intel i52500k - http://www3.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?aid=41224&agid=1617
    GFX - http://www3.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?aid=43007&agid=707
MBU - Not picked one yet, although I'm leaning towards - http://www3.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?aid=43883&agid=1601
    HDD - http://www3.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?aid=30028&agid=1284

I've a few things left to buy, mainly a case, psu and ram!

I don't need a keyboard, mouse, speakers, monitor (gonna be using my 42" lcd :P), etc!

Now, as stated above, I've never built a computer before, but I am a computer science student so I'm up to scratch on the lingo. Just wanna make sure though that all these parts are compatible and maybe take some suggestions about what's left to buy!

    Thanks lads,

    Niall!

    CPU: i5-2500k
    Mobo: ASRock P67 Pro3
RAM: Cheap 8GB DDR3 (This kit is a good choice atm.)
    GPU: HD 6950 1GB
    PSU: SuperFlower Amazon 550W
HDD: Spinpoint F3 1TB (NOT the Ecogreen version, this one.)
Case: Xigmatek Asgard/CM 690 II Lite/CM HAF 912 (Cheap to expensive)
    Any cheap DVD-RW
    Don't forget windows.

You might have enough leftover for a 64GB C300 SSD as well.

That's a green drive, go for the regular F3.

For PSU - do you reckon that you'll be getting a second card in the near future - be realistic about this as a high rated PSU will be less efficient running at lower levels.

Case - what about the fractal design R3? It's a very quiet case. If noise doesn't matter, just pick one that you like the look of.

You might be able to fit a small SSD into that build, but we'll see how much money is left.

Edit: I should probably refresh the pages before I post!

Might be worth considering Z68 mobo with a nice budget like that.

This is actually exactly what I am looking for, same reasons and all! (Minecraft:D)
Have almost the same budget maybe 800-850?

Yeah, I originally thought I could use my 32bit Windows CD I have here, but then realised I can only use up to 3.5 gig of memory with that, so I'm gonna have to buy a 64 bit, unless I can use my 32 bit serial, but I don't think I can.

Also, is this the card you're talking about - http://www2.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?aid=45195&agid=1004 - does that outperform the card I'd picked?
    Will this drive do? http://www2.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?agid=282&aid=27003&basket.add_aid=27003&basket.tkt=1939

Probably won't be adding a 2nd GPU anytime soon, maybe in the future though.

I've picked my case now, thanks for helping me on that one :)

Only started playing it the other day, but man I'm HOOKED!

Ok, so what does everyone think?

I would go with this card:
    http://www4.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?aid=46846&agid=1165

It would be a small bit better on most games for the same price. Also the card you picked it out of stock.

If you have a legit Window 7 32-bit serial that hasn't been used, then it will work for a 64-bit installation.

If you want to add a 2nd 6950 card in the future, then get the SuperFlower Amazon 650W PSU and the ASRock P67 Extreme4 motherboard. It will add about €40 to the price, but you will be perfectly set. I would also be looking to get at least a HAF 912 case to make sure you have enough airflow. The Fractal R3 would be a good choice as well (if more expensive)

I will look at that card! I updated my previous post btw, take a look :-)

Also, I've used the serial on my laptop, however I am able to use it on up to 3 seperate PC's! I also used it on my GF's laptop, so the one left would be this PC. I don't mind buying the 64bit copy, but would obviously prefer not to if I don't need to!

Yeah, if its a legit serial then you are fine. Just download and burn the 64-bit DVD :)

The DVD drive you picked is an IDE one, you want a SATA one like this:
    http://www4.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?aid=47362&agid=699

The case is out of stock but the rest looks good. Shipping is a flat €30 to Ireland.

Ok cool, I've got that sorted now! So it comes to just over 800e without shipping! Since it's a German website I won't have to pay taxes and sheet, right? Fairly happy with the price for what I'm getting. How long do you think this rig would last before I would be forced to upgrade the parts, and what do you think would be first to need upgrading?

Have you got two cases there? Coolermaster and Fractal R3?

lolol, wouldn't have noticed that, despite the fact that I went through it all again! Thanks man :P

  • Registered Users Posts: 109 ✭✭GWNiall

sorted that there, am going with the Fractral R3! :-)

Sorry for the 3rd post in a row (I know I suck :-( ) But would 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound be supported with this or would I need to get a sound card? I would prefer to use a headset with it which would have a mic, aswell as ingame sound and chat! Such as these http://www.dabs.ie/products/logitech-g35-surround-sound-gaming-headset---7-1-channel--ear-cup--62V1.html?q=logitech%20headset

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 4,281 Mod ✭✭✭✭deconduo

    Motherboard supports 7.1 surround sound.

Also that headset you linked is USB so it already has a soundcard built in.

With a cost of €800 and a budget of €1000 I would recommend looking into an SSD.

    http://www1.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?aid=46678&agid=1145

That's a pretty good drive and you will see some big differences in performance using an SSD as your main drive.

That board has SATA 6Gbps. I think all P67 boards have at least two ports with 6Gbps.

Why yes it does, sorry I think I was thinking about RAID when I made the post :)
    Thanks.
