What's wrong with bowing to the picture? Its only a quick bow to the picture as a mark of respect. JJ Machado is a legend though, and there's no-one I would rather get a belt from than Rickson.

One of the things i loved about bjj when I first moved from "traditional" martial arts was the lack of just such formalities, along with bowing to black belts, calling people sensai etc.

Nothing wrong, per say, just surprised me a little
