Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Hey can anyone recommend a lightweight PC for work. I am traveling more and more and I have a bad back so the smaller the better.

I need need the following functionality so I guess a netbook will not cut it:

    Output for projector
    2x USB ports
    Can run complex excel documents
    80GB HDD
    4 hrs battery life

Is there a PC equivalent to a MacBook Air?

This is the laptop I have - http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Acer_Aspire_3810TZ_669298.html

Very small and compact. Handles pretty much everything I throw at it.

I don't see why a Netbook would not do this, unless the screen size is also an issue. I cant say for all but my Samsung NC10 has a projector output that I used to demo a project it was fine, battery on it (9 cell I think) lasts at least 4 hours maybe more and the Atom chips while basic should be able to handle complex Excel spreadsheets, I had to run a few heavy weight Java apps on it in college and it was grand, make sure if your looking at netbooks they have a output port jic the one on mine is and extra and not standard on Netbooks

    Hope this helps

    Nick

Your requirements aren't that big, any new laptop, I'd even say any netbook would do the trick.

It looks like your main worry may be battery life which means staying away from large screens and fancy extras.

At the same time your battery life problem could be solved by simply buying a second battery.

Ultra lightweight portable laptops would be what you want. Not sure if you can afford them. Like a Dell e4200 or on a cheaper less light Lenovo x220i. Worth a look.

The Dell looks like what I need, cost is not an issue as work will pay for it and Dell is the preferred supplier.

I am not convinced a netbook will run my spreadsheets, they are 47mb (no pictures or charts) and contain over 200 macros. Even a high end desktop slows down with these.

Well that is a problem. Look more towards a Dell e6320 in that case, the e4200 sacrifices cpu power for battery life and weight. And cpu is what will be the killer in your macros. Get a extended battery if it becomes a issue and try to avoid the Core I3 model.

There is always going to be a trade off between portability and power. But I think the E6320 would fit into what you want. I use a similar Lenovo x201 and find it more versatile due to the faster components with a fair enough size for use away.
