    Hi All,

As the title says what is elective treatment/surgery?
    Any examples?
I am abroad and was wondering did it cover elective dental work and just curious to what other things it covers.
    Global policy, level 1.

    Thanks.

'Elective' means non-essential work like a boob job (cosmetic surgery) or straightening crooked teeth. It's where the patient asks for the work to be done rather than have it prescribed by a doctor to cure an illness or fix a physical problem like a bad back.

Are some orthopaedic procedures not classed as elective surgery?

FYI, according to the benefits summary for VHI's Global level 1 on their website, cover for non-emergency dental treatment is only included if you paid for the dental cover add-on. It doesn't appear to be a standard feature.

And from glancing through their policy document, I'd suggest calling VHI to confirm cover in any case, because in some circumstances the member is liable for 25% of the bill if a claim isn't pre-authorised.

yeah anything to do with treatment on the global policy usually has to be pre authorized....its always best practice regardless whether you are on a global policy or a normal hosp policy here in Ireland to call your insurer before you ever go to have anything done...above all at least it will give you peace of mind
