Would you keep the same CB pairing or would you stick Colo in?

Personally, I'd stick him in along with Willo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,846 ✭✭✭Moneymaker

Debuchy suspended so probably Santon at RB, Mbiwa to LB and Colo/Willo in the middle.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,161 ✭✭✭✭M5

Only a matter of time before Willo drops a clanger lads...

He has done well to be fair to him, but the rub of the green has gone his way a couple of times

  • Registered Users Posts: 511 ✭✭✭RickyBobby1

Colo doesn't deserve his place back. He's being below average for at least a season. Ideally colo and yanga but they dont seem to form a good partnership, too similar I think.
I would stick with Willo and yanga for time being and I would bring in Anita for suspended Debuchy.I have seen Anita play well there before

Well lads theres 4 of us heading over for the game on saturday anyone have any ideas of things we have to do over here to get the proper matchday experience.

What pubs for the best atmosphere before and after the game? Anything we should know

    Thanks

Can't go wrong anywhere really, class city.

Quayside is the place to be though.

Strawberry for the authentic pre match experience. Right beside SJP. Stay away from Shearers bar (if thats what its still called)

Follow the crowd at night time, people tend to move from one club to another.

Jesmond a little posher than the city centre for a few early beers too

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,846 ✭✭✭Moneymaker

Nice spots to eat in Jesmond too.

+1 on avoiding Shearers. The Black Bull is quite good I hear.

    WE SCORED FROM A CORNER!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,342 ✭✭✭✭That_Guy

Why have we dropped off so much? Fúcking annoying.

Christ, why can't we get headers like that..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,846 ✭✭✭Moneymaker

Jesus we could have won this easily but yet again we sit back. Baffling.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,979 ✭✭✭Vurnon San Benito

Thought overall for the majority of the game we were on a different level to Norwich City to be honest. Some excellent pass & move football played, which is very encouraging.

Canaries score from a corner and the tie turned as they had nothing to lose. In fairness, never at one stage of that game did I feel we were going to garner any result but a win.

Ameobi was sublime, Cabaye gave his all - and Mike Williamson was superb too. (!!)

Three wins on the trot including the defeat of Spurs and Chelsea -- this is classic example of why I'm an optimist regards NUFC :)

    HTL.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,846 ✭✭✭Moneymaker

Yeah no question we deserved the 3 points but should have been easier then it was.

Getting some momentum though and need to keep it up and beat WBA. We have a chance to be in a very good position come January.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,161 ✭✭✭✭M5

We insist on sitting back when in complete control. Its a baffling tactic that costs us so often. Obviously we have gotten 3 wins using that particular game plan but we have also dropped many points from 2/3 goals up and invariably end up having to work harder holding on to the game than we would if we finished it up by scoring again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,161 ✭✭✭✭M5

Hard to know how this will go. WBA very good away from home and bang in form. On the other hand we are on the back of 3 wins in a row.

The fact that we are going for 4 in a row makes the head says draw. Heart says tight 1:0

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,161 ✭✭✭✭M5

2 games in a row we score from corners after a 2 year wait for one.

    Like waiting for a bus!

That should make things interesting. WBA surely cant continue playing counter attacking footy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,161 ✭✭✭✭M5

Dowd having a huge impact on this game. Has fluffed every advantage decision for both sides and missed a clear tug on Remy. Olson should be off

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,561 ✭✭✭Duff

Now for the half time team talk of "Forget this pushing on. Just sit back and cling on, lads".

Fairly normal 2nd half from us so.

Opposition manager makes tactical chance and PArds has no answer...

Think it was Tiote tracking Brunt and then he just stopped running and let him in on goal unopposed. Awful.

    Edit: Boom!

Anywhere but there and is 3:1

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,161 ✭✭✭✭M5

    Too deep lads!

Looks like a good sub. Intention to hold on as per usual though

Am I being too harsh on Krul in thinking he should be launching himself at Brunt as soon as he shapes to shoot?

Love it! Thankfully the FA haven't noticed we've replaced Mike Williamson with the 'Defend-O-Bot 3000' yet.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,161 ✭✭✭BetterCallSaul

Can't believe the last four results. Credit where it's due to Pardew. He's clearly changed his tactics from hoofball to a more passing game, even though it took a long time to abandon that ridiculous game plan.

Still don't like the way we always settle with what we have when only one goal ahead, but can't complain too much when the results are like this.

Ref gave us nothing today as well..

I love it. Shola had a superb game as did Debuchy and Santon. Going back to Shola, his passes were brilliant at times. Playing out of his skin at the moment. Delighted for him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,979 ✭✭✭Vurnon San Benito

Just proves what we've all been saying - the team are capable and most natural at playing the right football.

Last season the absolute crap we played at times was Pardew trying to play it safe and secure results in the league, enough to manage with our European adventure.
He tried to play it really, really safe which ironically put us in huge danger.

No Europe, no distraction - seeing some great football on show. AND SHOLA - best I've ever seen him in a NUFC shirt, EVER!

    HTL! :)

What's the story with Ben Arfa? He doesn't seem to be starting any games lately. He's been a sub quite a bit so he's obviously not injured. Out of form or are Newcastle set up differently lately?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,342 ✭✭✭✭That_Guy

We've been winning without him so Pardew doesn't wanna change anything especially as it's been going good for some time now.

Good sub to have to influence a game should we be looking for a goal. Good player but can go missing and he doesn't offer as much graft going the other way from goal.

He doesn't track back. Leaves full backs exposed.

Could argue that if we had better full backs we could accommodate our best player

But we don't. So he doesn't play.

He wasn't dropped due to not tracking back though, he had improved that part of his game. His all round form went to bits like usual and he didn't look interested.

Certainly our most talented player but he's always had serious consistency issues. There's no middle ground with Ben Arfa, it's either genius or dreadful.

Again, i think its up to Pardew to mould the team around him successfully. Not being able to accommodate our only, arguably, world class player is an indictment of Pardew.

He has failed to get the best out of other players too. Cabaye last year was a joke. He was not wonderful for France but much much better at the time.

On the other hand, what he has done with Ameobi this season is incredible, he has been immense. A man who's second touch is invariably a header or a tackle has looked like a player, at times, this season.

There's a lot of things I'd criticise Pardew for but the only person to blame for Ben Arfa sitting on the bench is Ben Arfa. The team was set up around him this season, but he couldn't keep up his form and was rightly dropped. His motivation /interest and consistency over a season has been an issue his whole career and is nothing to do with Pardew. Hopefully when he gets a run out again he is back on his game as we know he's a game winner on his own when he could be bothered.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,846 ✭✭✭Moneymaker

He was spot on to drop HBA tbh. His performances were gash and it was affecting the entire team. We've looked more solid and more cohesive with him out of the side.

Bring him back if we need him and he's put in the work. Otherwise he can keep his overweight ass on the bench.

What happens if you do finish in the European spots lads? Pardew has made it pretty clear his distaste for European competition.

Wouldn't that far ahead yet, only a third of the season gone yet.!

At the end of the day - players playing for their WC spots is a huge factor in us doing so well, you can tell Cabaye is still desperate to merit a big move away, and a starting role in the France national team (deservedly so too)

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,746 ✭✭✭TaosHum

Looking at the squad, we have a full team of players looking to nab a spot in the World Cup.

    Ameobi (Nigeria)
    Remy (France)
    Debuchy (France)
    Cabaye (France)
    Ben Arfa (France)
    Gouffran (France)
    Sissoko (France)
    Coloccini (Argentina)
    Krul (Netherlands)
    Tiote (Ivory Coast)
    Yanga-Mbiwa (France)

When you look at that, its very easy to see why people were having a go at Pardew for this team under-achieving. There are not many teams in the Premier League (certainly outside the top 5/6) that have as many players vying for World Cup spot.

Delighted with the way things are going at the moment and credit where credit is due, Pardew has this team playing as a unit and getting the best from the likes of Ameobi and Williamson.

But we have to stay top 8.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,846 ✭✭✭Moneymaker

Yeah we overachieved in 11/12 and hideously underachieved in 12/13.

I think we'll probably finish somewhere between that this season and that's probably about where we belong.
