I'm hoping some of you might be able to help me with an issue I have.

I'm in a situation whereby I have an outside entity coming into look at certain records and information stored on the various systems we have.

For security reasons I need to be able to monitor (preferably in real-time) what information they are accessing.

I've know problem with letting the people know that their usage is being monitored etc...

They will be using their own laptop and will be gather access to our IT system by the IT department.

I'm being told that I could have a problem monitor the usage as it's just not possible.

Have any of you guys got any suggestions?

It can be done but not sure about the legalities of it. Easiest would be to have them use one of your PCs and then monitor that, this way you're not intruding on their computer.
There are several programs that can monitor what goes on, even in real-time.

Or you could give them a restricted account that only can access certain directories?

There will be absolutely nothing illegal done. The user will be granted restricted access and will be informed at the outset that the computer is being monitored. They will be required to sign a confidentially agreement and will also be required to sign an agreement allowing the IT department to monitor the usage.

If they do not agree then they will not be granted access.

Would you be able to give me some of the name of the programs that I could pass on to the IT department? It's quite annoying that an IT department can't come up with a solution to this and that I'm forced to use boards!

If you don't want to name the programs for whatever reason I would be most obliged if you could PM them to me.

    There's
    http://www.networklookout.com/employees_pro.htm
    http://www.softactivity.com/
    http://www.networkpcmonitor.com/
    http://www.softpedia.com/get/Network-Tools/Network-Monitoring/Activity-Monitor.shtml
Net Monitor for Employees Professional allows you to see screens of computers connected to the network. This way you can observe what your employees are doing! Additionally, you have the ability to take control of a remote computer by controlling the mouse and keyboard. You can record remote computers screens even when you are not monitoring them.
Real time employee activity monitoring over LAN.
Perform invisible monitoring and stealth monitoring from remote computer.

NB, I have not used these myself.
You need to verify they are good programs and also they aren't free.

But tbh - if they really are ok with it you can just have them open a Netmeeting and share their screen with you.

Do this solution not mean somebody has to sit there watching him? Why not just put somebody there watching him then and ignore the software?

    Thanks for the replies.

We need to be able to have the evidence of what they viewed so it needs to be recorded.

It turns out the guys have come up with someway that they can do it.

I'll get to see how good there solution is sometime next week.

I've another query that you might be able to help me with but I'll start a new thread for it.

If you need it recorded then you can use TipCam, it'll record the screen.

So A) have them set up a Netmeeeting and share screen with you and B) use TipCam to record your screen.
Mind you cannot use your computer then as it's busy recording.

Try it out for a few hours first. Also disable your screensaver.
