Billy now works for Radio Kerry on match days as a bit of a pundit with Ambrose O'Donovan,Billy made his debut in 92 for Kerry

Kerry have had a few down through the years)

Gerry Murphy (remember that famous goal against Tipp in 98)
Charlie McCarthy (played in the All Ireland semi in 96 disappeared then)
John Cronin (Got 1-1 against Cork back in 91,injuries plagued him)
Johnny McGlynn (played 3 c'ship matches in 99 wasnt seen after that)

Players like Paul O Conner,Barry John Walsh,Ronan O Conner who were all top underage players never really made it at senior inter county grade

Phillip Clifford from Cork...Whatever happened him? Did he own a pub or is that not true?

Wasnt he captain for Cork one year? 1999 id say, always had his knee strapped up,must have been plagued with injuries

Gerry Murphy also score something like 8-05 in a minor club game once.

Paul O Connor & Ronan O Connor were two who never made the step up witch was a surprise. Never taught Barry John Walsh would make it anyway

Barry John was talked up big time when Tommy left, only played one half of football this year for Kerry against Cork in the league, seems to have lost his confidence and going through a rut,I think he has gone to America for the summer.

Ya the name carried him a long way,he is a good club player but not good enough for inter county, same was been said of David Moran that his name was keeping him on the panel, but his performances in the league before his injury robbed us ,he was well on his way to having a big year imo.

any news on Antrim hurler Liam Watson, an outstanding talent, would have made my all star selection at no.14 last year. has not been on Antrim's team this year.

I am not sure. Think it might be a couple of weeks too early for him.

Just watching the Laois and Kildare match, just wondering whatever happened to Brian McDonald, did he recover from the leg break or was he forced to retire because of it? He was a class act at underage level

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,081 ✭✭✭hunter164

Leg break has more or less finished his career.

I remember a player for Cork, John Buckley who scored a controversial goal against Clare I think it was 1996 where he ran into the net before he kicked the ball. He then played against Kerry and never heard of him again after that. Another player Mark O Sullivan disappeared off the radar after the 1999 All Ireland Final against Meath.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 802 ✭✭✭Rebel1977

Think Mark O'Sullivan went to the states.

Of the same team, player called alan o regan from castletownbere, whatever became of him ?

Unfortunately (though problems of his own making), for Frankie, it was not really got to do with his footballing ability. He played well for St Brigids in the All Ireland Final.

Another Rossie who went off the boil (injury I think) was Seamie O'Neill, though I think he is back in the panel. Then there are all the Lohan Brothers (Eddie from 1998 team)
Frankie was his own worst enemey when he was with the county team ,he played well for the club and is looking fitter than ever but at this stage his county days are over.
O'Neill missed all last year through injury is back on the panel this year(still only 28).
The Lohans sort of drifted away from the panel, eddie got too old and gerry i think lost the appetite and unfortunatly stephen has been very ill for a number of years.

Alot of that Cork team from 1999 seemed to disappear. What happed to Ronan McCarthy? Philip Clifford of course is another. Fachtna Collins i remember being a handy player didn't hear much of him after. Owen Sexton even though i think he was still there up ontill 2/3 years ago seemed disappear fairly fast. As did Seán Levis & Michael Prout. Bredean Jer O Sullivan was another who disappeared very fast

Kilkenny have had alot of great hurlers come and go that have collected all ireland medals over the years. The Phelan brothers from Clara which i think one of them had to retire from hurling completely as he was diagnosed with a leaky heart valve. The Coogan brothers from Tullaroan have totally disappeared off the county scene. John Hoyne from Graigue-Ballycallan was a big strong man and a class hurler at wing forward but for some reason went off the radar. Richie Mullally from Glenmore. Bryan Barry of Dicksboro was midfield for them in 2005.

    Peter Lawlor-Limerick
    Eoin Reid-Kilkenny

    Derek McCormack-Kildare
    Derek Conroy-Laois
    Alan McNamee-Offaly

Some of them lads, afaik, played their last game for KK against Galway in 2005 - maybe when Cody realised that he needed to overhaul the squad, he thought that they were surplus to requirements?

Another Galway lad who disappeared off the county scene was Kenneth Burke - used to play against him in underage hurling and he was absolutly brilliant (as good as Joe Canning, if not better imo) but never seemed to make it. His clubmate Richie Murray would also fall into the category of not making it at county level - had one good year in 2001 (where Galway had really only to play 1 game to make the AI final) and then was on and foo the panel for a few years before calling it quits a few years ago.

They got sick of him in Meath aswell, all the talent in the world, from the neck down, struggling to even make the Toomevara team at the moment.

Brislane isnt struggling to make the Toome team. his been playing for them at full forward but injury means he has missed 1 or 2 games this year.
still very effective club hurler, very talented but is a head case.
shouldnt be let onto a hurling field

He played not part in their defeat to Kildangan and was only used as a sub in the game after that, and he was only a second half sub in last years county semi defeat against Sars.

Liam Cahill from Tipperary. All Star in his first season. Think he plays with Thurles Sarsfields still.

Remember him being Ballingarry alright. Saw him with Sarfields a couple of years back in a Munster club final. Must be the same guy.

Was that the lad that they called Beano?

I remember that match and seeing his leg sticking out all wrong as he went down. I spotted it before my granny and dad did and (I have a fear of broken legs) put my hands to my face and looked away shouting "oh my god, it's broken".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,192 ✭✭✭✭Kerrydude1981

Tipp had another good forward during the early 00s,Eugene O Neill, what happened him?? Injuries or loss of form?? And also Conor Glesson(first name could be wrong) he was captain for Tipp one year I think.

I had similar reaction myself. Poor guy. It was awful. He came back after it but unfortunately was never the same player again. He was a fine player.

I thought he was the best underage forward during the late 90s and cursed that he was from Laois and not from Kerry :)

Ah yes Eugene, one of my favourite players, he was FF on the '96 winning minor team that contained the likes of Michael Ryan, John Carroll, Bonny Kennedy and Declan Browne, Eugene went on to play in th e'97 senior fianl and was one of th eonly players I remember getting the better of the great Brian Lohan while Lohan was at the top, he was also part of the successfull 2001 team, all went downhill from there, an over fondness of porter and an ever expanding waisline! He still hurls withhes club Cappawhite and despite the fact he can hardly move is still racking up huge persoanl tallys.

James Masters; few years ago he was corks main and only forward now I believe he is taking a break from the game due to back injury. Pity, he had a great left foot.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 461 ✭✭kerosene

Masters was a great underage player and still an excellent club footballer, just lacks a bit of pace for senior football. Still if he was from almost any other county he would be a key player for them.

he wasnt fully fit for the Kildangan game.
he would ,without a doubt ,be on the Toomevara team full time only for injury and of course, suspension.

More of a personality clash with Conor Counihan by all accounts. He withdrew from the panel last year.

He never showed for Counihans first game in charge.(A challenge against Sligo I think). But this did coincide with his decline due to various injury problems.Still playing good football with Nemo though!

I think it may have been more to do with the fact he wasn't the main man anymore and didn't like that there was other players as good as him on the team
