    400metres?

They have done a good job in Bloomfields. Hopefully there will be a Lidl open up in the old shopping centre.

I have a friend who was involved in the original move into Ireland and the acquisition of Crazy Prices.

Tesco strategy was to pitch their prices just below Dunnes, Supavalue and Superquinn on the assumption it would spark a price war, knowing they still had quite a bit of margin to play with.

Needless to say, the price war never really happened.

He reckons Superquinn and Dunnes are absolutely raking in the cash.

Have to disagree there, it's a shadow of it's former self. That store used to fantastic, now it's just another faceless Tesco. The off licence there was a great example of how easy it is to make a shop look really nice and they gutted that years ago and turned half it into a freezer
Used to work in it too, good times back in the day.

I thought all Tescos were just another faceless store?

no, a whole 8 euro per year :pac:

An Irish subsidiary of the English company, and only cos they can do it cheaper than the Irish companies who've managed to price themselves out of the contract...

And how is that Tesco's fault? They aren't forcing customers into their stores at gunpoint you know...

Tesco in fact had there own employed drivers who they shafted by bringing in Stobart, transport and fuel costs play a major role in the cost of produce yet Stobart pays his so called professional drivers the min wage so if Stobart can do the transport for less than other companies how come tesco have not passed on the savings to the customer.

Which suggests that there are too many people working in retail. If one person can do the same job that it currently takes 1.5 people to do, that is inefficient, no?

Yes of course. The scale of Tesco means economies of scale in a big way. Number of people in the supply chain per unit sold of any product has to be significantly below say Spar or Mace etc..

Tesco setting up a new shop (especially in a falling stagnant market / economy), means only one thing. Displacement of jobs from other employers to Tesca, but on much less than a one to one ratio.

Maybe for every one job added by Tesco in the new shop, 1.5 or more will be lost eleswhere.

The thing is, if we want to INCREASE employment, we have to make stuff, to export!!! Manufacturing and or exported service. Simple:cool:

Fiddling around with Tesco stores, ............ is bullsh1t.

why would they bother when there's no competition in the market to speak of to make them...

Last time I went into a small traditional shop, a few years ago, I was driving through a village far from home and stopped to pick up milk and a few basic groceries.
I could see the TV on in the sitting room out the back. So quaint I'm thinking. I won't ask the price of anything, we should support these places (no price stickers on anything). The old biddy lined up the groceries on the counter and plucked a figure out of her head. Four times the supermarket price. The locals probably only get charged twice the supermarket price; lucky them!

At least with Tesco you know where you stand.

Things were worse in Ireland without Lidl and Aldi, prices were higher, going further back in time to the 1950s is not the right way to go about things.

I must admit I hadn't really noticed that much of difference in price between Dunnes and tesco on name brand products. Superquinn have always gone after the same market that Waitrose has in the UK.

^ Ya i agree, dunno why people here are so anti-tesco, mainly to do with them being british.

Most of the shops here are British, and create employment here and some nice items (i.e clothes), so dunno what the problem is.

I've lived in both the UK and Ireland (Im London-Irish), and i must say the whole anti-brits thing here is lame. Really lame.

Yes Tesco are British - get over it.

to be fair, apart from the terrible thead title, there doesn't appear to much in the way of Anti-british mentality in the thread. I haven't read every post on this thread (the thread title was enough to turn me off it initially), so I might be corrected.

In much the same way people argue over the benefits of Walmart to the economy in American towns, people in Ireland seem to argue over the benefits of Tesco.

Can you highlight the anti-British sentiment on this thread please.

People are anti-Tesco's because they're no longer a super market but more of a sell absoulutley everything store. They've moved into almost every facet of retail and the small guys are struggling to compete. I've no problem with it to be honest.

By people I mean those with basic reading and writing skills not those chanting no to foreign sports while wearing their Celtic jerseys.

Yes there is quite a bit - title please??

I'm not even gonna get into a debate here, much more important things to worry about than debating with people on boards.ie!

So apart from the already highlighted to be an inappropriate title....anything of actual substance? Oh, I see, you have run off....you were merely just trolling then?

So buying your groceries in Tesco is evil, but buying them in Lidl is alright? Tesco is a giant in the retailing world, but people do realise that Lidl are massive too? At least Tesco has some kind of connection to Ireland (the CEO was born to Irish parents, there would be quite a few Irish shareholders either directly or through pension funds).

For the record, I do all my shopping in Tesco because I find them good value, with a great selection of quality goods. I own Tesco shares too.

The title is clearly tongue in cheek and a swipe at the little minded. I can't believe I have to explain that to you and you obviously haven't read the thread :(

I'm not going to debate on Boards, you're in the wrong place then love.

    This^

Don't forget all, Tesco were once a market stall and nothing more, but the did things right and grew and grew and grew. You don't get to be the 3rd largest retailer in the world if you're not doing things properly you know.

Ok, so they inflate prices in Ireland, so does everyone else in the sector, only more competition would solve that but that won't happen now as it's too late and all the supermarkets have bought up the land banks required. Asda / Sainsburies taking over Dunnes would be about the best we could hope for now.

The OP is obviously an anti British/English troll who's opinions about anything British should be ignored.

Or maybe he is a closet Englishman....(Insert appropriate amount of winking smilies here)
