Unusual Features

Hi, Can anybody identify what these features are:- http://lightbox.time.com/2011/06/09/our-beautiful-planet-images-from-space-by-an-astronaut-photographer/#31 noticed them whilst looking at the other pics but what are the circular features? If anyone has any ideas let us all know. Cheers.

They look not unlike meteorite craters to me. Not man made anyhow. Just my humble

Volcanic rock formations possibly, something like petrified vent holes?

Just saw them ina set of pics and thought they most likely were natural but might have been used for strategic purposes in the past.
