Irish grants for UK uni?

I'm going into my 2nd year in university in the UK. I never applied for the Higher Education grant here for my 1st year as I never thought I would get it since I was studying outside the country. However I've since been told that I could have applied for the grant. Does anyone know if this is the case and if so can I apply even though I've already completed a year of uni?

I went into Mayo County Council today and they reckon, going by last year's rules, that they should be no problem applying. You have to apply online at www.studentfinance.ie and it will draw up a letter and let you know what you need to submit with it. The online application process was meant to be live today but as of 1pm I can see no link to it on the site.

You are entitled to it but your fee's won't be paid unless you are in a postgrad course!

Not sure that's entirely correct on the postgrad part - the Irish grant/fees system only goes 32-county wide at postgrad.

This is what I was told by both the Louth VEC and the grants office in Louth County Council when I asked about getting the grant for a UK course.
I was entitled to a grant to study in the UK but they wouldn't cover fee's for an undergrad course but would for a postgrad.

I'm in the exact same situation!! Are you back in Ireland now?
I can't seem to figure out anything from reading the stuff both social welfare and the VEC/county council websites have and I'm living in England over the summer so it's really confusing...
I'd say the best bet is to go into the council and ask someone.. alas, I can't do that :(

Perhaps they've changed things recently then. Usually it doesn't extend beyond the 32 counties unless you are spending a period abroad as part of a postgraduate course that is awarded by an Irish/NI university.

@ TheBlackBuck and kathola - let us know what the outcome is for both of you as I'm sure this question will come up again in the future!

Ok, my case is a little confusing as I did get the grant for another degree a few years ago and now I'm on exchange in Oz! But when I spoke to them this is what I understood....

Yes you can get the grant if you are studying in the UK but you have to fulfil certain conditions such as being resident in Ireland for 3 of the previous 5 years, not having received it for at least 5 years etc. You can also get the grant if you didn't apply for the first few years of the course but the 5 year rule is counted from when you first entered the course. It's means tested on the 2010 year.

All of this applies for undergrad degrees. Postgrads are different. Also you should be (in all likelihood) eligible for a tuition fees loan from Student Finance England to cover the full cost of the tuition fees but this has to repaid when you graduate and start earning over £15,000 p/a.
