    Today we have a good example of what weather people call a "dirty high" or dirty ridge, meaning that high pressure is overhead but it's generally full of cloud (in this case just over land, you can see it's clear off to the west) from a stable layer of strato-cumulus. These are tricky to forecast because one day the cloud can be widespread and persistent, the next day it might break up and once it does then it may stay clear until the high breaks down.

    Perhaps this thread should be re-titled "wasn't it supposed to be nice one day?"
