Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Such a popular topic round here but is it all a bit overblown? Just trying to find out how much these "scumbags" really affect a person's life.

There are scumbags everywhere but I've had very little trouble from them. The last time they actually bothered me must have been about 3 years ago but I got over that.

Scumbags are a result of ineffective community policing

What exactly is a scumbag?,i see it used here everyday in so many different terms. If a person has a skinhead they are a scumbag,if a person has tattoos they are a scumbag,if a person drinks in a pub that sells pints for €3 they are a scumbag. To me none of those people are scumbags.

I'd say more a result of over regulation and them not being allowed to do anything & a lack of facilities.

just stick it up to them and they shít themselves, they don't expect you to actually stick up for yourself, anyone who doesn't stick up for themselves deserves a beating imo.

Scumbag can range from a lad in a liverpool top hanging outside a chipper/bookies/run down pub to a dogdey drug dealer. They're often badly spoken, a bit ugly, stupid expression, wear grey tracksuits and often travel in packs. They're either called Anto or Keith or some nickname ending in 'er' or 'o'. The younginz' sometime have their hands down their jocks on their...private parts. The girls communicate by roaring nonsense, smeared in fake tan and kinda look like pikeys. They often spit between the gap in their 2 top front teeth and their highest ambition is to drive a car someday and maybe have a child and buy him a baby size liverpool jersey.
They lack intelligence and end up doing pretty meanial work or skive benefits. They're very confrontational to anyone they cant empathize or relate to. They come from a backround of poverty and are perhaps desinfranchized by industrialization in the past as they were likely rural folk by heritage who just farmed and tried to get by. So now they are the run down as the demands of technology and industry simply wasnt part of their general make up and are now merely low tier consumers who will never climb the ladder that demands what they cant deliver.

Basically, they are the Hyenas of society.

I could be completely wrong though.

,if a person drinks in a pub that sells pints for €3 they are a scumbag.

This would mean most students are scumbags. Which is something a large percentage of AH appears to believe anyway.

I have not yet come across any decent sized town in Ireland without scumbags. That said, they do relatively little harm to anyone. Spaniards, which I had an abundance of in my school, were far noisier, destructive, and an eyesore in general than "scumbags".

Have had troubles in the past. I used to live in an area which was mainly mad of families, and I only lived with my cousin. A couple of times when out and about on that side of town scum tried to mug me, but I stood up for myself.

I'm big enough, but these people try to take advantage of the "politics" of the neighborhood and think I will back down because I do not have a big family behind me.

He didn't mention anything to do with that and i'm pretty sure you've insulted some "working class" people on here by assuming thats the social class he meant.

I don't see what being a scumbag has to do with social class. A scumbag, to me, has always been someone who's anti-social to an extreme extent, usually seeking confrontations of different sorts. But I see that happen across the social spectrum. It's sad that the overt snobbery which came along with the Celtic Tiger (it had always existed under the surface) still remains. I really don't understand why people focus on the anti-social actions of the underprivileged underclasses, and not the anti-social actions of all people. Some people argue that they're targetting the actions, not the people, but then contradict themselves by focusing on things like the way people speak and dress. Unfortunately there's a lot of snobbery in this country, going each way.

Some scumbaggy things I don't like:

Getting belligerent with people while intoxicated, often to the extent of violence.

Arguing loudly in the middle of the city (usually Dublin).

    Driving dangerously fast.

Driving an expensive "executive" car which gives you a sense of entitlement, causing you to not indicate at turns, cut people off and run red lights at busy dangerous junctions while laughing at the people you almost run over.

    Child neglect.

Harassing people and destroying property during Rag Week.

Treating people in service positions as beneath you, to the point of verbal abuse.

Deliberately ringing the doorbells of the elderly at 3am then running away.

Dealing drugs to those you know are addicted to them and being harmed by them.

Knowingly causing great harm to numbers of people through political or financial mismanagement, inaction or corruption.

Discriminating against people based on their social level, or on surface details which are presumed to be indicators of social level.

I've witnessed all of the above firsthand and consider them the actions of scumbags. Some are associated with certain social classes, others are common among all classes in this country.
Why focus on just a small number of such actions?
