How do you say record

I just noticed that I say the word 'record' in different ways, depending on what I mean.

    For example...

"Twitter had a record month in May"
Here I'd pronounce it without any emphasis, both syllables the same...

"Don't forget to record the game"
Here I'd emphasise the RE slightly, making it a slightly different sound.

Does anyone else do this? Is this how new words get started....

Those are two different parts of speech. The noun 'record' has stress on the first syllable while the verb has it on the second. This is a general rule as with words like 'subject, 'object' and 'contract'.

The pronunciations you describe sound like you're pronouncing both wrongly though.

Slightly off topic next time Rory Quinn or Eamonn Dunphy is on the radio listen to how they pronounce say "remember"

I would pronounce it like Reh-member...rightly or wrongly:o

However both of these worthies always pronounce it "Ree-member"

and the consequent similar words likewise.

    Listen out for it;)

    The Flutther told ya:p

I would say rí-member, burned into my brain since childhood:

"I must rímember to rícord the world rehcord attempt tonight."

Remember is one of those words that always sounds different in songs, I think.
