Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Spraying? PTO Speed Forward Speed

    Hi Guys,

We purchased a second hand unigreen sprayer a few weeks ago for managing pasture ie mostly dock control in paddocks and some burning off for reseeding a paddock or two each year.

We got tired of waiting to get contractor to come and do it for us and never having him when conditions suited or when we needed him.

Anyway my question is what is the recomended PTO speed and driving speed for spraying. There is no operational manual with the sprayer questioned the dealer but he didn't have one for it.

Thanks in advance for any help.

a sprayer works on pressure and you ajust according to that.

    i travel at 5.3mph at 2bar pressure with a 12m hardi sprayer at 90L/acre (220L/Ha)
have you a small paddock of well known area you could do a few dummy runs on?

you could also try using http://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0007/186379/boom-sprayers.pdf to find your starting point. do a few google searches for 'calibrate boom sprayers'. its a good idea to do a jug test anyways but nothing beats a dummy run.

Sprayers need very little pto power to run the pump, so run them on the highest speed pto setting you have on your tractor (ie 750E or 1000rpm) If it's an older tractor, you'I just have to use the 540 speed, but adjust revs to ensure your at least working at this pto speed, you'I possibly have to rev over to get a good mist.

Fill tank with water only and run the sprayer to ensure you've all nozzles working. Ensure you use clean tap water only or at least fill through the strainer inside the opening of tank. Make sure all filters are in order in the hose pulling the water from the inside of the tank to the pump. Using clean water will save you alot of headaches with filters clogging on the boom nozzles and spray only coming out of some and not others.

Anyone that is using a jarmet sprayer won't be able to run it on 1000 rpm as it requires less than 200 rpm to leave it working at 2 bar pressure. Most tractors with 1000rpm will run at this or above when ticking over - which isn't much good for travelling across land.

A combination of three things set the output of a sprayer, the forward speed, the pressure in the boom and the output of the nozzle. All reputable brand nozzles are colour coded so once you have access to an output chart (like here) you can work out that at 3bar and a forward speed of 10 KM/Hr you would put out 192 lt/ha with a red nozzle (the standard spacing for these flat fan nozzles is 50CM, you'd need to adjust if your spacing is different).

Presuming you can adjust the pressure on the sprayer you'd set the revs to something economic on your tractor and pick a gear to give you the correct speed.

    For dockstar/MCPA I'd be aiming for between 200/250 lt/HA

Cheers guys thanks for all the responses some good information and excellent links. Got the sprayer out last night and put it going in the yard with water everything working ok. Will run a callibration on it as suggested and then off to try a keep the docks from taking over.
