Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Buying a tractor - genuine hours ??

Is there any way of knowing the genuine hours on a tractor?

I've looked at a few second hand tractors for sale recently. I found it hard to know if hours on the clock were genune or not.I usually look at the usual stuff, wear on foot pedals, wear on joints on back lifting arms, general state of cab, tyre wear etc.
Can you really tell? If the clock has 4,000 hours, how do you know it's not 14,000?
I dont have a problem with tractors being painted up either, so long as they're painted right.

Any tips - would an experienced mechanic tell by the sound and smoke of an engine?

I don't know, but our tractor has 3700 genuine hours (bought it new) and there is practically no wear in anything and everything feels very tight.

We have the original tyres, but I don't think that means anything as we dont do much road work.

I drove a similar tractor before with an alleged 2500 hours, but the gearchange seemed sloppier, there was more paint off the door handles and the seat seemed a bit worn and loose. I think it was clocked.

I think buying a good secondhand tractor is difficult, you need to look at plenty and really size up the seller.
