Dublin cycling club - which to consider?

Okay, I've decided to hang up my 'lone' cycling lifestyle (well, my cycling buddy has just got a job in Waterford and is moving down there next month.)

I like to cycle both Saturday and Sunday; I'm pretty strong and in my early 40s (but I look younger!). Generally I'll clock 60/80km one day, and 100/120km on the other.

But here's the problem: I like to start early - before 08.00 if possible - and my preference is to cycle west, south west and north from Dublin city centre.

Any clubs out there willing to offer me a home (excluding Orwell Wheelers as I don't like their kit)?

    Suggestions on a postcard....

    What kits do you like?

    http://www.swordscc.com

Swords Cycling Club have spins on both Saturday and Sunday morning - have a look at the website above. The Saturday spin starts at Blakes Cross on the old N1 at 8.30 so would suit your planned start time of before 8 from the city centre. The Sunday spin is more leisurely and starts later.

They also run a club league on Wednesday nights (endless threads about it on here) and do leisure tours and a sportive. They (I suppose that should be "we" now) are a friendly bunch and you'll find your cycling will come on a lot, particularly if you take up a bit of racing. You'll have to make your own mind up about the kit.

OP, do you like cerise? Or how about indigo and scarlet?

Ah, kits not sponsored by shopping centres!

Actually, check out these Castelli jerseys:

you have brightened up my day!

join a club where the members know each other. Like Dublin Wheelers, Lucan, Tiernans for example

Hang on, you're not in my club? I always thought you were. ;)

Why not sponsored by a shopping centre? You get free coffee from Insomnia and they let you ride your bike through Tesco.

I agree on the kit, it's pants.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,901 ✭✭✭lukester

Dirk, haven't you heard that in M&S they actually carry your bike for you. Tesco is for plebs.

Also agree on the kit. It needs a re-design. And a new sponsor- Anne Summers anyone?

You want Anne Summers to design your kit ....

... not that one with the special "zipping" arrangement is it (must be pretty unique around these parts)?

If it's the one I'm thinking of it exposes far more than any Anne Summers gear would ...

As someone who wears the Orwell kit regularly I know dodgy kit when I see it, and those jerseys you've posted up are revolting.

The grey one looks like you'd be wearing your bibs on the outside, and the blue one is just a big barcode. How is a barcode better than the name of a shopping centre?

Dublin Wheelers have a new black kit with yellow and blue trimmings.

Orwell gear seems to instantly add 10 lbs. This was confirmed on the inter club night out when, to my surprise, none of the Orwells looked as fat as I thought they were.

    :D :P

The new Usher kit is much less awesome than the old one.

The green one is nice, much better than the blue I think.

No sponsor on the dublin wheelers kit. I went with picking the club closest to me. Less time spent cycling to the weekend spins means more time in bed!

Is there any poll to see what clubs Boardsies are in?

Morana what's the story with the Ravens, are they still based in Finglas?
Checked out website but it seems to stop at 2007. Looked like some very strong cyclists in the club at that time.
