I went on to ask how the flooding may affect the race and looks like my post was deleted!strange!

How do I add my time to this post above?
also who is doing the 4.15 pacing?(or is there such a pace group?)
    thanks

Hi Seanin4711, the floods are not going to affect the race. The 4:15 pacers are:

Weather forecast not good at the moment but subject to a lot of change in the meantime.Wet and windy on the cards so a bit early for time predictions for me..

    Who is reporting that?

Yahoo reporting 30% chance of a shower and winds @31k, south direction.

    It will change many times.

Already bought my cheap fleece for the start.

Got it in Heatons for 10 euro

You're still looking at the wrong weather forecast. This is the one you want. Nice easy breeze until 12pm with a few drops of rain (more like a spray) to cool you down, followed by a bit of sunshine and a nice southerly breeze to push you home. Stay in the happy place. :)

Thw weather will be weathery, there's a possibility that it'll p1ss for an hour, then snow, then the sun will come out and split the stones, then more rain followed by a typhoon, welcome to Ireland! Now HTFU and enjoy the race!:)

I've gotten so lazy so fast... with the taper have been off the bike and getting the bus into work this week. Haven't done a tap since Saturday, and now that I've got to do a 5km jog tonight to keep the legs ticking over it seems like a marathon in and of itself. It's cold out there and I'm tired! All this sitting around and 9hrs sleep lark is really taking it out of me...

At this rate I'll be rolling up to the start line in a wheelchair next Monday.

Folks, can anyone who has run a marathon or longer in very poor conditions--i.e wind and rain specifically due to the current risk of this happening next Monday please share any tips etc that they may have.In hindsight after completing one- what mistakes were made or things learned regarding gear etc. I know Cork had one wet year..
Also how would a medium/strong W/SW wind impact on someone's pacing for DCM as with it being a circular type course--should you try and run say for example 9min/miles for every mile in order to reach a particular time goal or 830/930ish miles depending on that mile's wind direction etc. Maybe you just run at the same effort and not worry too much about mile splits.
Also do you adjust your target time downwards for a windy day on a circular course rather than risking going out too hard and losing lots of time later.
Having only done DCM8/9/10 which were all dry and not really windy i think a few tips now may help myself and first-timers as there is still some time to change race strategy.

There is nothing magical about running in wind and/or rain. Just use common sense.

Chafing is much more likely when it's raining; use some lubrication, be it fancy sports stuff like bodyglide or plain old vaseline on all strategic spots (groin, underarm, nipples, some people lube their feet as well), or any other cream that you happen to have in the bathroom.

As for wind, try and run at the same effort rather than the same pace. Try tucking behind someone else if the headwind is strong. If you're running with a pace group, they will come in very handy, not just the pacers themselves (who will take the full brunt) but your fellow pacees as well. Or you could team up with other runners and take turns at the front.

As I said, common sense will get you a long way.

As for adjusting your effort: Unless there is a hurricane on Monday, wind will at most have a minute or two impact on your time. If you adjust your target downwards by anything more than that, that's just an excuse.

Rain does not impact target time at all.

I feel exactly the same aparently its normal from what ive read since. I had this image of me bouncing around the place with all this excess energy but i am the total opposite.

Glad to read posts like this - am wondering how I will manage 3/4 miles at lunchtime not to mind 26.2 next week. Am exhausted and feel unable to put one foot in front of the other - also feel like a fraud for entering and find myself wondering frantically how to get out of it

Will just have to trust the advice and see what happens ...............

P.S --this is not a request asking for mental advice such as HTFU etc.

Run by effort. Tuck in behind a group when you are running into the wind and accept their pace (even if it seems a bit slow) as it will save you energy.

On the downwind sections try to get away from groups and open the sails!!

    As for rain: HTFU :D

You'll be full of nervous energy but try to remain calm, your brain is the least glycogen efficient organ in the body! Chat with those around you, everyone will have some amount of nerves.

Race Number: In wet conditions, throw an extra pin or two onto your race number. I think the DCM numbers are built to last (good amount of plastic in the fabric), but a couple of races I've participated in, in the rain my number has all but dissolved in the rain (finished Berlin marathon in 2010 with my number in my hand).

Pace bands: If you use them/make your own, make sure they are completely covered in sellotape to water-proof them, otherwise they will be a soggy mess in no time.

Feet: Moisturize them for a day or two before the race. It'll help to avoid blisters on race day. On race morning, consider applying bodyglide to areas of your feet where you are prone to blisters.

Nipples: Dudes, cover them up! We don't want to see photos of singlets with smiley faces. It's not cool. :)

    Bodyglide: Everywhere!

Eyes: If it's quite wet and windy, I'll be wearing sun-glasses with a clear lense, just to keep the rain and wind out of my eyes.

Afterwards: Warm, dry clothes in your gear bag. You don't want to be cold wandering from pub to pub after the race. :)

Looks like the RTE player is not blocked by geo IP address, so I'll have something to watch in work on Monday morning. :D

I'll be keeping an eye out for those chaps with big balloons.

The good stuff usually is blocked (like champions league, gaa, comedy etc). But the obscure sports like greyhound racing and athletics usually make it onto the rte player international. Generally if there is no international competitor to the rights it makes its way up.

Not sure how you're classing greyhound racing and athletics as being more obscure than GAA internationally. :D

Setanta international shows GAA in the UK and abroad. It's quite popular amongst us expats. So the rte player cant show this as it would be interfering with setanta's monopoly on international gaa coverage. Something like the nationals from Santry or the St. Leger greyhound race would have no international appeal so they are free to show it on the rte player international.

If Channel 5 in the UK decided they wanted to show the DCM too, it would no longer be on the rte player international for the same reason.

Best not to drag this thread in the direction of the DCM on TV thread, we all know where that one headed :)

Some of the newbies amongst you may find this link useful.
It's a series of tips in preparation for the New York Marathon but much of it applies to Dublin also.

What time does the expo open? I just got a mail which says it's 12-6, but the website says 11-6 - anyone know which is correct? Heading in from Swords so I'd like to get it done and dusted as early as possible, don't want to be hanging around outside the RDS for an hour!

What time does the expo open? I just got a mail which says it's 12-6, but the website says 11-6 - anyone know which is correct? Heading in from Swords so I'd like to get it done and dusted as early as possible, don't want to be hanging around outside the RDS for an hour!

Says 11am also in today's Herald

Expo opens at 11am and registration opens at 12. Registration may open slightly earlier if everything is ready to go.
