Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

i dont bother with mile markers anymore, because there is always one or two off in races, on monday i just put the garmin on one mile auto lap and adjusted my pace for 26.4 miles instead of 26.2 so instead of 6:51 i just tried to have them come in at 6:49....the only time i checked against the course was at halfway

I didn't take it personally, not even the "F**k off Thomas and keep behind me"

What I said was, 'Fcuk you anyway Thomas' and then when you realised you were a minute up and pulled back, I said 'Back you go and stay there'

See, not as bad as you thought was it?

I like to think my race report is reasonably accurate, and nothing you say contradicts this view. ;)

    Really enjoyed that vid.

I ran 1:32 / 1:30 for a 3:02 finish on Monday - a 6 minute PB so obviously my views about the whole event are fairly positive :)

I've run in Cork and Rotterdam but you can't beat the big event in Dublin for me - the atmosphere is really special and you get to run a fantastic route through the capital city on traffic-free streets. The Phoenix park is also a major bonus - I'm always jealous of Dublin runners whenever I'm up there.

The top 5 positives I saw on Monday were:

    1. The Pacers - the whole pacing gig goes from strength to strength every year. For example, look at how strong the 3:00 group are now compared to even two years ago. I didn't run with the pacers (in fact the challenge was to let them go so as not to jeopardise the 3:05 target) but having seen pacing groups elsewhere there's real quality in DCM - in all the groups

    2. A great atmosphere - everyone contributes to this but the volunteers, officials, stewards and gardai are the basis on which the event is perceived and experienced and they are excellent

    3. The support - I remember an absolute cacophony of noise at Kilmainham, Milltown (seven arches) and crucially at the climb up to Foster's Avenue. Not to mention the wall of noise in the city centre. Thank you.

    4. The course - just hilly enough to be a challenge but flat enough to go for a time if you want to. Also, easy to break up into manageable sections and passing through some of the most beautiful parts of the city. And a great last 5 miles

    5. The finish area - it's great the way Merrion Square and Merrion Street are closed off for the runners and spectators - there was a really good vibe there after the race. Again, a great chance to experience a traffic-free city centre. This could be developed into something bigger.

The only negative I saw was the narrow sections along the Crumlin Road- fairly tight to say the least. It was just about OK when we were going through but must have been tough for the groups with the 3:30 and 4:00 pacers

Boston in April is next for me - where I'll hope to make my first sub 3:00 attempt but I sure hope to be on the startline for DCM 2012

Fantastic result mate, well done. I was shouting out to everyone around Pearse street and I had a feeling I saw you but wasn't sure. I didn't realise you've improved so much. Congratulations and good luck in Boston.

I have to say, as a spectator, I really enjoyed Monday. We had an early start setting up water stations at the club. Handing out gels to mates, water to hundreds of happy runners and ended up shouting encouragment for a couple of hours at pearse st. A great day.

Shame about the runners that DNF'd or Blew up but that's marathons for you and we've all got lots more in us.

I bet everyone is thinking of a Spring marathon now, brilliant.

You need to purchase the iTab for Dublin and then put in the promotional code and it changes your balance to zero

I'm sorry if this is the wrong forum but i've noticed my urine is almost totally red after the race.

I ate 5 gels and drank about 2.5 litres of water (with High 5 hydration tabs)

Could it be the concentrated gels causing the colour ? Didn't have any dehydration issues. I hope it's not blood.

Again, apologies if it's the wrong place to ask.
Sorry to take so long in responding. Have you checked out runners hematuria (or haematuria)(literally mashed blood)? If it is that, it is relatively benign but at its extreme (and I know) can be uncomfortable! Just drink lots afterwards. it's probably well-disappeared by now.

Its been ages since I posted on boards! I finished my first marathon in 4:51:57. Its such a great feeling, did anyone elses legs feel as heavy as cement blocks after the 20 mile mark? I achieved my target of sub 5 hours aswell so Im delira. The weather probably caused a lot less support to be out but what can ya do, a1 race.

Hey Misty, sorry if I missed you at Pearse St ( I was in a wworld of pain at that point and its all a bit vague ) ...I do though remember you roaring your head off just after Chapilizod , giving everyone some much needed light relief....presume you'll be up for a Spring Marathon yourself ....???

ha yeah the voice was nearly gone that night. I thought sub 3 was gone when I saw you there on Pearse street. You were really working and I could see you checking the watch.
Yeah more and more people are signing up for Rotterdam. I'm finding it hard to book it and commit but I probably will. 90% sure I'm doing it ;)

Great stuff Derek. I was 250m from the finish when you were coming in. I thought the sub 3 was gone by that stage though so I decided to keep quiet and not shout at you. Delighted to hear you got it. You had a pair of shades on but nothing could hide that grimace, well done.

He does seem to be prone to bouts of shouting during marathons, running or spectating it seems. :D

Contrary to popular belief, caffeine does not act as a diuretic when consumed in moderation, and does not lead to dehydration or to a water-electrolyte imbalance; current evidence suggests that caffeinated beverages contribute to the body's daily fluid requirements no differently from pure water.

I love coffee and was never comfortable about this. Apparently the effects of coffee is that it causes an increase in the frequency of urination for 2 to 3 hours after consumption but does not result in a net loss of fluids. This is where the diuretic confusion came in.

So taking coffee prior to a marathon could lead to pee stops and stopped time is dead time.
Caffeinated beverages have long gotten a bad rap when it comes to their perceived dehydrating effects. Past studies on this idea only looked at the two or three hours immediately following coffee consumption and yes, they did find that urine frequency increased during that time; as you can attest to yourself. What they failed to take into consideration is the remainder of the day. More accurate studies took a look an entire day of urine production and they have found that the urination pattern shifted to earlier in the day but the overall amount of urine produced remained the same.

That said taking what you are used to still applies as many such as Bill Rodgers said a coffee was a staple prior to his marathons.

    @Krusty

I don't see why you have to take the point so seriously. It is a fact the coffee is a bladder irritant which causes the above. I can reference doctors on the net and an Irish Urologist if you like.

I am curious about the numbers running DCM this year. All the publicity was about > 14,000 runners. As far as I know about 12,000 collected their numbers, 11,600 crossed the start line and about 11,200 crossed the finish line. All these numbers are from a vague memory of an article I read since the marathon but I was wondering is this variation in numbers typical?, especially the 14,000 to 12,000 drop.

Yes, I think so. A lot of people who enter the marathon and forget to train, and a smaller number of people who get injured and can't run.

Well, the 11,200 figure's definitely wrong, just over 11,650 finished: http://dublinmarathon.ie/results.php?search&race=35&placeall=%3E11650

It would be a typical enough drop. In the half-marathon, more than 8500 signed up, 6096 finished. Entry for the 2012 marathon is open already. The chances of someone signing up now and their plans changing sometime in the next year is quite high

There are also still a good few people complaining that they don't appear in the results and there are a few people finished after the timing mats were taken away. I'd say about 12,00 finished and about 2,000 either didn't start or started but didn't finish.

Very true. A friend of mine signed up for the 2011 DCM in November 2010 after speaking with me. I was speaking to him again a few weeks before the event this year and he told he that he didn't get enough training in and had to abandon it yet his name still appeared in the race programme. A lot can happen to/ for a person in 12 months and I don’t think refunds are an option.
