I registered and payed for the marathon in August with the half marathon (have receipt) and have yet to receive any sign-on e-mail even though all of my friends who entered have.

At this stage should I have received this e-mail??

    Would have thought so,

Check if marathon entry is down against your name here

After reading that story I was thinking it's kind of a lame excuse to be skipping Dublin just because my wife is due.

Still it's nice to be just reading this thread and running with no pressure - looking forward to the taper madness ratcheting up in the next couple of weeks.

4 years ago my missus would not let me run Dublin because her due date was a week later. Not even my suggestion that if she went into labour that day I'd just keep running for an extra half mile into Holles Street would change her mind.

Then again, Loch Ness at the beginning of October was a beautiful marathon!

They have a 6 mile marker outside Donore, can't be right? Usually it's around 8 miles there? I know the route through the park has changed but it surely hasn't cut off 2 miles?

As far as I can make out, the distance through the park hasn't changed, I hope they have a 'Go Team Slow' banner down there ;)

I got my email for number collection on Oct 7th.
Did you see your name on that site?

It's interesting that of about 25 people with my surname, I was the only one with a number for both the marathon and the race series. I'd have expected a much higher overlap.

I only have a number there for the half, even though I ran the 5 mile also, maybe it's because a lot of people paid per race rather than all together for the series.

I got clearance for Berlin so was happy enough to take that. I made the same suggestion as you did but it was met with a glare that buried the idea for good.

From past experience what would be the size of the pace groups? I may need to hide from Meno :-)
And from those who start out with a pace group what % stay the course?

This might give you an idea and this was at Milltown, so still quite a few

    Ah yes, the memories. :)

From what I remember, the guys and gals immediately around us stayed pretty constant until about mile 20 or 22, and then a lot of them seemed to disappear (but we picked up new ones on the way).

I also remember seeing a video of us at the finish and being absolutely blown away by the sheer number of runners with us. At the time, I felt there were maybe 20 runners around us, but on the video it looked like at least 100.

I guess I never really noticed the ones who were behind me. Anyway, you can expect a sizeable group at all times.

Mile marker signs and posters starting to go up. Big placards sitting in the corridor down the club tonight.

They have a 6 mile marker outside Donore, can't be right? Usually it's around 8 miles there? I know the route through the park has changed but it surely hasn't cut off 2 miles?

Just testing the new signs :) outside the Marathon Office.

Ah cool that's what I thought but it was very confusing altogether. Should have put the 20 mile marker there, that'd really have messed with peoples heads. :D

They look good though, no one can say they missed a mile marker now.

Having not run Dublin before, and not really being that familiar with Dublin (and never having really paid attention when driving as to elevation), anyone have a simple synopsis of the course? Looking at the elevation chart provided on dublin marathon website, it seems to be uphill from around 2.5ml to 6mls. Also looks like a sharp hill around 9 mls in with more uphill on mls 12,13 and what looks like another tester aroun mile 20. Are any of these hills worth talking about or would this be considered generally flat?

Also, are there any very exposed areas on the course where there's often a strong prevailing wind in your face?

Exposed areas include Phoenix Park (though this years route will be more sheltered), Sarsfield Road and the section from Fosters Avenue to RTE (Donnybrook). Otherwise, the route is quite sheltered. A day like today would be tough, but we've been lucky the last three years in a row.

Crumlin would be a bit of a drag aswell and if there's any head wind you'll know about it.

No matter what the day is like it will be tough for some of us;):D

The weather app on my phone now has a forecast for the 31st, a westerly wind of 27kph.

Obviously this is going to change but this would give us a headwind in the Phoenix Park. That said, the North Road is more sheltered than Chesterfield Avenue so it shouldn't be too much of an issue!

Isn't Chesterfield road dug up right now for road works?

Yes, it is, we're running along North Road instead.

The one thing I don't want is a windy day. I ran up Crumlin Rd about a week ago into a strong headwind and it's a killer. Don't want to have to face that on the big day,

They have yet to get the forecast right 3 days in advance and you are worrying about a 2 weeks forecast?

If they still predict high winds on Sunday week, that's when I start to get worried, not now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,863 ✭✭✭✭average_runner

I am sure if it is windy the pacers will have wind shields to protect us all.

Heard the 3.30 pacers are really good in protecting their team !!!
