Castletroy College beat Glenstal 19 - 16 in the Limerick City Junior Cup Final today. Castletroy score a try in the last 5 mins to win.
Do you know who won the senior cup qualifier? Bandon or Midleton

Midleton College Qualify For Schools Senior Cup
    14 December 2011, 7:18 pm
    By Olan Allen

Midleton College caused a major shock in this Avonmore Supermilk Munster Schools Senior Cup final qualifier with a deserved victory over favourites Bandon Grammar.

Midleton College 14, Bandon Grammar 0.
The game was played in treacherous weather conditions with heavy underfoot conditions and the home side took full advantage to run in two first half converted tries and then held out for a famous victory. The first came after sixteen minutes when a sweeping back line move saw full back Ben Mitchell make the extra man and he ran straight through the Bandon defence to touch down and Captain Ned Hodson added the extras.
Midleton doubled their advantage on twenty seven minutes when after a series of drives by the Midleton pack at the Bandon line, prop Thomas Turkington crashed over and Hodson converted.
With conditions deteriorating neither side could muster another score and Midleton can now look forward to a first round home tie against Ard Scoil Ris in mid January.
Midleton College:Ben Mitchell; Odhran Brennan, Ollie Kane, Ned Hodson (capt), Louis Farnham; Rory Hurley, Alex Simonin; Mark Twomey, Robbie Steele,Thomas Turkington; Adam Pennington, Stephen England; Brian Moore, Andrew Coulton, Adam Coulton.
Bandon Grammar: Kerry Desmond; Eric Kingston, Peter Good, Stephen Good, Jamie Kingston; Darren Sweetnam, Gavin Veeters; Des Strueli, Pat O’Shea, Mark O’Donoghue; Ben Hunter, Bertie Miller; Jerry Robinson, Peter Deane, Richard Kingston.

He was on the u19s this season, subbed in all 3 games for the A team and started in the 3 B team games

Disappointing to see Bandon beaten by Midleton yesterday. Wasn't at the game but judging by the names on the starting line-up, they were missing 2 or 3 players. I was starting last year (in college now) but we always had the worry that the pack wouldn't be as big as the last two years.

One guy, Mighty Ofakor has given up rugby; shame 'cause he's a huge, fast & powerful winger. In 4th year this year so he would have had a few years left.

No doubt though, they'll bounce back and catch the third Mungret Cup in a row! ;)

Think Clements won the qualifier 10 -5 so they'll play Castletroy in the Qualifier.

Below is match report from Junior Cup Qualifier Final played on 20/12/11
    ST. CLEMENT’S COLLEGE JUNIOR RUGBY
On Tuesday 20th December our junior team travelled to Abbeyfeale to play Colaiste Ide agus Iosef in the Junior Cup qualifier. The prize for victory was a mouth-watering clash against Castletroy College and a chance to play in the Junior Cup proper. Our opponents had beaten Newtown college and also won the King Cup so had to be treated with great respect.
The game was played in wintry conditions on a pitch that was surprisingly good for the time of year. Both teams set out their stall early with Abbeyfeale playing the “10 man” game with great effect. We on the other hand tried to play football and more often than not over complicated things. Having the lion’s share of possession and territory a score was sure to follow but the resilient defense of our opponents was causing concern for our players and coaches alike. Eventually after a series of well executed phases Jack Broderick hit a “hard line”, dummied the pass and slid outside his marker for a super score. We then set about increasing the margin but again the West Limerick boys were steadfast in their resistance and indeed were rewarded for their huge efforts when they scored an excellent try from a free kick after strong scrummaging . That left the score at 5-5 and all parents, past students (great to see Evan and Sean) and everyone else settled in for an anxious and fraught final twenty minutes.
This was to signal the emergence of the real St. Clement’s spirit which this team have in plentiful supply. We knuckled down and began a series of drives up the hill was inspiring to witness. Inevitably a mistake would occur given conditions and the siege gun of Abbey’s no. 10 and indeed 12 would launch the play deep into our territory again. Countless times our lads rolled up the sleeves and dug deeper into their reserves. With time running out and extra-time looking more likely one final effort was launched up that hill. After eight phases the eagle eyed Darragh Joyce spotted a chink in the defensive armour and pounced close to the ruck to score. (10-5) this score was both lucky and hard earned but as Arnold Palmer once said “the more I practice the luckier I get”. This was an excellent performance epitomised by a never say die attitude and a huge willingness to work hard. We discovered that through adversity character is shown and that if we stick together we can succeed. The lessons we have learned today will stand to us!

Strange to see Sweden even have a team at that level. We'd better win.

    Mid Week Schools Roundup
    18 January 2012, 11:03 pm
    By Olan Allen

Ard Scoil Ris booked their place in the second round of the Avonmore SuperMilk Munster Schools Senior Cup as Cbs booked their place in the finals of the Barry and Kidney Cup.

Midleton College 6, Ard Scoil Ris 13.
Ard Scoil Ris advanced to the next round of the Avonmore Supermilk Munster Schools Senior Cup with a hard earned victory over Midleton College at the Towns Park.Entering the final minutes of this contest an upset looked on the cards with the sides tied 6-6 and Midleton dominating, but Ard Scoil Ris steadied the ship and in injury time their center Robbie Deegan cut through the Midleton defence to touch down under the posts and Robbie Burke converted to setup a meeting with C.B.C. in the next round.
The Limerick side dominated the opening half. Full back Ronan McKenna and out half Burke were posing numerous problems for the Midleton defence where yet again Ben Mitchell as Midleton’s last line of defence was coping with everything that came his way.
Burke was off target with a penalty after 5 minutes for the Limerick side, but made amends with efforts on 15 and 21 minutes to lead 6-0.
Slowly Midleton began to settle into the tie as their pack began to take control in the forward exchanges. Midleton’s skipper Ned Hodson was off target with a penalty on the stroke of half time.
Hodson opened his side’s account three minutes after the break and levelled mid way through the second half as the Midleton forwards were completely in control.
Rory Hurley was off target with a drop goal effort minutes from time for Midleton and then came Ard Scoil’s late rally.

The Cork side led 15-0 at half time with tries from Cillian Monaghan, Barry Egan and Lorcan O’Regan.
Tadhg Arrigan extended the home side’s advantage with a fourth try early in the second half which Olan Hanly converted for a 22-0 lead.
Karl Hanly got in for a try for Crescent. Joe Dowling completed the scoring with another try for Christians.

    Match Report from the Examiner
Agony for Midleton as Deegan snatches late Ardscoil winner
    By Alan Good

    Thursday, January 19, 2012

Ardscoil Rís’ Conor Glynn is tackled by Midleton College’s Andrew Colton.

Midleton College 6 Ardscoil Rís 13

MIDLETON COLLEGE learned a harsh lesson about the fine margins of sport as Ardscoil Rís escaped East Cork with a last-gasp Avonmore Milk Munster Senior Schools Cup qualifier victory yesterday.

Having pulled back a six-point deficit to level it with 15 minutes to go, Midleton smelt blood in the closing minutes.

But Rory Hurley’s drop-goal attempt missed the target, and Ardscoil finally found the gaps in the outside channels they’d threatened to exploit all day, centre Robbie Deegan dummying his way over from 30 metres out in the final minute of normal time.

Ardscoil’s next opponents, CBC Cork, won’t be running scared on the basis of this performance but the Limerick school deserve credit for sticking to their task despite often falling foul of referee Chris Harrington.

They had a superb counter-attacking full-back in Ronan McKenna and authority at 10 from Robbie Burke, while Conor Glynn — who put in stints at blindside flanker and in the front row — led the forward charge.

Their pressure yielded three penalty chances for Burke in the opening 18 minutes. He failed to get hold of the first of those but landed two beauties from tricky angles to give his side a tenuous 6-0 lead.

But Ardscoil’s breakdown work began to let them down thereafter — with a number of promising lineout opportunities spurned too — allowing Midleton to edge their way back into the contest in the second period.

Stuart O’Sullivan and Thomas Turkington carried powerfully while the Colton brothers, Adam and Andrew, did the dirty work close-in as they eked out a pair of penalty opportunities which Munster Schools captain Ned Hodson — who had nudged a previous chance wide just before half-time — converted to level it with 15 minutes to go.

That was the signal for both sides to take more risks in search of a match-winning score. But it was Midleton’s defence who blinked first, standing off Deegan after he’d been sent into space by Burke. His deception skills were on the money and he crossed near the posts with Burke converting.

Ardscoil still had to face a three-minute Midleton onslaught, but their fringe defence and discipline held out in admirable style to advance to a last-eight meeting with CBC at a Cork venue on February 1.

    MIDLETON COLLEGE: B Mitchell; O Brennan, B Moore, N Hodson (capt), C Simpson; R Hurley, A Simonin; M Twomey, R Steele, T Turkington; A Pennington, Adam Colton; Andrew Colton, G Chambers, S O’Sullivan.

Replacements: S England for Chambers (46); L Deane for Andrew Colton (67).

    ARDSCOIL RIS: R McKenna; C Mulqueen; R Deegan, D Kelly, E O’Callaghan; R Burke, J Murray; T Cusack, D O’Shea, L McMahon; P Kearns, C Irwin; C Glynn, D O’Halloran, C Power.

Replacements: P Obande for McMahon (h/t); L Guinane for Cusack (61), F Bradshaw Ryan for Irwin (65).

    Referee: C Harrington (MAR).

Local schools ready for latest cup challenge
    Published on Monday 30 January 2012 10:54

We take a look at the Limerick teams competing in the Munster Schools Senior Cup this year

    CASTLETROY COLLEGE

Management: Mike Story (head coach); Barry Murphy (assistant coach); John Staunton (assistant coach); Brendan Colleran (strength and conditioning); Declan English (manager)
Star man: Conor Bonfil - No 8 who was on the Munster Schools U-18 team. Was involved last year and should really be to the fore this time around
Representative players: Ben Burns (Munster U-18), Conor Bonfil (Munster U-18), Jonathan McDonnell (Munster U-18)
Last season: Drew 10-10 with CBC in the first-round game, but were deemed the ‘losers’ as the Cork side scored the first try. Were beaten 10-3 by Crescent in the quarter-final proper
If they were an Irish celebrity, they’d be: Kenny Egan. Made it big in 2008 but have struggled since for attention. Could come again
Prospects: Their first round game is against St Munchin’s, the only all-Limerick clash. Hard to see them winning that one and, if they lose, their likely opponents are last year’s champions Rockwell. They could push Munchin’s but they’re up against it
Any other business: Peter Clohessy’s son Luke and Sean Cronin’s brother Liam are both involved. They’d a mixed pre-season, beating Ardscoil Ris and St Munchin’s, but then well beaten by Ardscoil and PBC
SQUAD: Brandon Foley Friel*, Mark Kennedy, Stephen Shinners, Tom Kelly*, Liam Cronin, Pat Bermingham, John Hourigan, David Butler, Ben Burns, Conor Bonfil*, Jack Costello, Ger Sheehan, Luke Clohessy*, Sean Moran*, Eoghan Clancy, William Shanahan*, Killian Carroll*, Jonathan McDonnell*, David Grant*, Jack Murphy, Noel Clohessy, Robbie Sweeney, Jack Tiernan, Jack O’Neill, Rhys Joyce, Cian Malone, Mark McCarthy, Darragh Kennedy, Paul Butler
    * Indicates a player involved last year

    ARDSCOIL RIS

Management: Noel Davis (head coach), Martin McPhail and Francis Broderick (team managers), Fergal Lyons (strength and conditioning), Gary Walsh (forwards coach), Kevin Long (school director of rugby)
Star man: Ronan McKenna - outhalf Robbie Burke is a fine player but McKenna, at full-back, is a great operator too
Representative players: Patrick Kearns (Munster U-18), Conor Glynn (Munster U-18)
Last season: Were beaten 15-5 by local rivals Crescent in the opening round before losing 8-3 to eventual champions Rockwell in the quarter-final
If they were an Irish celebrity, they’d be: Amy Huberman. Great in their own right but a lower profile than the main act
Any other business: Have already got a cup win under their belt following last week’s 13-6 win over Midleton College. Have some nice young players breaking through from the junior team that reached last year’s final but rugby is now playing second fiddle to hurling in the school
Prospects: CBC represent a huge obstacle in their first game, especially as that game is in Cork. A likely quarter-final with St Munchin’s will define their season.
Squad: Robbie Burke, Colm Noonan, Patrick Kearns, Craig Irwin, Jack O’Halloran, Jamie Fitzgibbon, Cathal Flanagan, Conor Glynn, Sean Guerin, Luke Guinane, Paul Obande, Barry O’Donnell, Luke Guinane, Colin Ryan, Craig Irwin, Anthony Keane, Dylan Kelly, Jack Stokes, Robbie Deegan, Luke McGrath, Tony Cusack, Joe Murray, Philip McNamara, Frank Bradshaw-Ryan, Peter Reidy, Ronan McKenna, Liam McMahon, Conor Mulqueen, John Stack, Andrew O’Byrne, Evan O’Callaghan, Jack O’Connor, David O’Halloran, Darragh O’Shea, Paul O’Connell, Gavin Farrell, Ciaran Power

    CRESCENT COLLEGE
Management: Tony Trehy, Conan Doyle, Len Dinneen, Niall O’Shea, Amy Judge
Star man: Niall Horan - the prop has played with the Munster U-20s this season and also trained with the Irish U-19s. Captains this Crescent team and has a lot of experience for this level
Representative players: Niall Horan (Munster U-20), Elliott Fitzgerald (Munster U-19), Greg Barry (Munster U-18), Gearoid Lyons (Munster U-18), Greg O’Shea (Munster U-18), Jack Dinneen (Munster U-18)
Last season: Beat Ardscoil Ris 15-5 in the opening round before getting the better of Castletroy, 10-3, in the quarter-final. Beaten 23-12 by PBC in the semi-final
If they were an Irish celebrity, they’d be: Ryan Tubridy. Light on their feet but well able to mix it with the big boys
Prospects: Their opening round game against PBC is a huge game. Win it, and the competition could open up in front of them with a quarter-final against Glenstal and a possible semi-final against St Munchin’s. Lose it and they face a do-or-die game against CBC
Any other business: Having won the last two junior cups and reached last year’s senior semi-final, on paper they’re Limerick’s best prospect. Greg O’Shea and Jack Dinneen are sons of coaches Len Dinneen and Niall O’Shea who won a senior cup with Crescent in 1983. O’Shea is also a talented athlete and ran for Ireland in the European championships last summer
Squad: Greg Barry*, Conor Beatty, Eoin Casserly, Brendan Costello, David Culhane, Diarmaid Dee*, Jack Dinneen*, Elliot Fitzgerald, Timothy Fitzgibbon, James Frawley, Seaghán Gleeson*, Karl Hanley, Niall Horan*, Nigel Kerr, Peter Liston*, Seán McGee, Cathal Monaghan, Ronan O’Doherty*, Dairmaid O’Sullivan, Joseph Purcell, Cian Scott, Cillian Rea, Jay Kavanagh, Mike O’Donnell, Cormac Blake, James Green, Ed Barry, Gearoid Lyons, JJ O Neill, Greg O’Shea

    GLENSTAL ABBEY

Management: Mike Prendergast and James Hickey (coaches), Br Matthew Corkery (manager)
Star man: Luke Bradley - the outhalf is a nice player and was on last year’s team as well. A year older, he’ll be even better this time
Representative players: Ian Kenny (Munster U-18), Ian McCarthy (Munster U-19), Tom Ryan (Munster U-18)
Last season: Were beaten 21-5 by PBC in the opening round. CBC beat them 13-3 in the quarter-finals
If they were an Irish celebrity, they’d be: Michael Noonan. Working with small numbers but battling on bravely nonetheless
Prospects: Play champions Rockwell in the opening round and while the Tipp side aren’t as strong as they were last year, it’s still a big ask for a school with such limited playing numbers. Lose that game, and they’ve a daunting challenge against PBC. Have a good backline and if they get good ball, they could cause problems
Any other business: Ian Kenny, who was with the Munster U-18s this year, is a busy man. He’s also with the Waterford minor hurlers. They won six of their ten pre-season games, including the city league final
Squad: Kevin Lynch*, Luke Bradley*, Michael O’Riordan*, James Igoe, David Higgins*, Cal McCarthy, Ian Kenny, Robert Shanahan*, Ian McCarthy*, James Hanley, Sean Gleeson (captain), James Ryan, Blake Dunne, Andrew Devereaux*, Tom Ryan*, Kieran Grennan, Cormac MacDonagh, Richard O’Hara, Andrew Boland, Rossa Dooley, Eoin Hurley, Conor Hughes, Hugh Connors, Jack Boland, Kevin O’Keeffe

    ST MUNCHIN’S

Management: John Broderick (acting head coach/manager), Andrew Burke (backs coach), Ger Burke (forwards coach)
Star man: Lee Nicholas - Munster U-19 back-row player and team captain. Also involved with last year’s team
Representative players: Evan Ryan (Munster U-19), David Begley (Munster U-17), Luke O’Halloran (Munster U-17), Gavin Ryan (Munster U-19), Steven Collins (Munster U-17), Ben Kilkenny (Munster U-17), Darren Ryan (Munster U-19), Lee Nicholas (Munster U-19), Ryan Tsang (Munster U-19), Cormac O’Donnell (Ireland and Munster U-18), Dan Goggin (Munster U-18), Mark Long (Munster U-17)
Last season: Lost to Rockwell 33-12 before then losing 17-6 to PBC
If they were an Irish celebrity, they’d be: Colin Farrell. Produce quality work every so often. Have a bit of a tough streak too.
Prospects: Have a star-studded squad and a reasonable draw. Beat Castletroy and it should be Ardscoil in the quarter-final. Could well be dark horses for outright glory
Any other business: Impressed in pre-season and have a proven cup-winning coach in John Broderick. The Ryan triplets - Evan, Darren and Gavin - have all played Munster U-19 this season

    CBC 13, St. Munchin’s 3.
A deserved victory for Christian Brothers College in their opening game in the Avonmore Milk Munster Schools Junior Cup at Musgrave Park.
The winners totally dominated the game up front and this laid the foundation for the Cork Schools victory.
Christians got off to a great start with Michael O’Halloran slotting over a penalty from thirty metres inside the opening minute.
David Lynch was dominating out of touch and wing forward Daniel Walsh was putting in an amount of work around the park, as Christians had Munchin’s on the back foot for long periods in the opening half.
Excellent tackling by the Munchin’s defence kept Christian at bay but they eventually breeched the Munchin’s defence on nineteen minutes when following a series of scrums close to the line, scrum half Jamie Murphy got in for a try.
The slippery ball was making things difficult and Christians winger Darren Lee knocked on over the line after a well worked back line move on the stroke of half time.
Christians continued to dominate after the break with full back Killian Doyle knocked on when another try seemed certain.
Slowly Munchin’s worked their way back into the match and hooker Peter Meyer kicked a penalty after forty seven minutes.
Munchin’s lifted their game but the CBC defence held firm and in the final minute a forward drive resulted in Evan Mintern going in for a second Christians try.

Munchins won but ASR played the better rugby. Munchins used their bigger pack off 10 a lot and used their size to their advantage, munchins wont beat glenstal or PBC if theres a repeat of todays performance
Thought munchins ability to maul was very good, but the size of their pack compared to ASR's played a role in that and the likes of the ryan triplets esp gavin were very good

I dont think Ard Scoil played better it was just that Munchins couldn't close out the game when they should have.Ard Scoil didnt step inside the Munchins 22 in the first half.Their forwards had nothing and their backs just kicked the ball away everytime.Munchins let the foot off the gas in the last 15 minutes and they almost paid for it.

Munchins did a lot of forwards trucking the ball up off 9 or 10 esp the ryans who are very big men and they were quite effective, outhalf would launch ball up into the air. theyd try compete in the air. If Ard Scoil had 1 or 2 bigger forwards theyd have won, their lack of sixe in the pack really hampered them against a very big munchins pack

I think Munchins just played what was in front of them. They exposed Ard Scoils weaknesses off the rucks and they could have thrown it out wide if they wanted to aswell. If they get Pres in the next round they will have to be more clinical and more organised than they were today.I hope its Pres. That'll be a great game.

No, it was the same in their 1st game against castletroy. They use the ryan triplets in the pack and kick it into the air or into the corners and chase up in a defensive line. They have a very good lineout and used it to good effect against a small AS pack,
Theyll have to play with more width and more imagination if they want to beat Pres or Glenstal in their next game as esp PBCs pack will be as big as them

Believe me, they have plenty of potential out wide if the forwards game doesn't work out in the next match but with John Broderick coaching they will most likely just improve on the forwards game and resort to the backs only when they're stuck.

not from what ive seen of them, not able to play a backs orientated game. will smash it up and try smash everything in their path and if that doesnt work theyll keep trying to smash the opposition until they get their way

Well they have ability in the backline.Cormac O Donnell at 15 was picked for Ireland U-18 and Dan Goggin at 13 was on the Munster U-18 squad. They just havent needed to use them. What type of game are Glenstal playing this year?

They may well have ability in the backs but to me it doesnt appear like they're ever going to use them for anything other than crashing the ball up or chasing after kicks.
From what ive seen of them theyve just preferred the forwards to truck it up and batter the opposition into losing rather than use their backs even when theirs been plenty of chances to use their backline

the munster schools backline this year was very average, they actually play a similar game to what munchins are doing, textbook coaching

That is a fair point. I was at both matches myself and they did indeed mainly use their pack but it worked extremely well. Why change whats not broken? However I do agree that the backline should be used more often. Who knows how good this team could become with a bit more variety in their game.

From what ive heard and seen i dont think their able to play an expansive game and their coaches this year wont be and havent been coaching them to use an expansive gameplan
Dont think theyll beat either of the cork schools or rockwell even if they begin to play a more expansive gameplan

Munchin's problem in the backs would most likely stem from the lack of any backs coaching. As far as I know, Young Munster's Andrew Burke has stepped in to help out with the backs as, Niall McDermott (Munster U18 head coach) was removed as head/backs coach by player power.

Surprised they didnt have anyone doing any work withtheir backs but its clear from the games theyve played
Good to hear Burke is involved in coaching young players, pity he didnt want to stay in the pro set up with munster. seemed to be a very good player at schools level

Andrew Burke has been coaching the backs since October but because John Broderick is in charge its only natural that they play a forwards game. Ger Burke and Ray Ryan are also helping out.

Muscleshirt i dont agree with that comment at all. . .was at the munchins ard scoil game and have to agree with ormond lad was actually painfull to watch munchins style of play, slowing down quick ruck ball so players could get into position/pods off 9, kicking ball away, paint by numbers rugby!!! Some good players but badly coached. However i was at the munster schools vs ulster schools game in thomond a few months back and was very impressed with munsters style of play, ran the ball at every oppurtunity, lots of width, heads up 15 man rugby excellent for player developement. Breath of fresh air to see a munster schools team taking this approach! How you could possibly think this was similiar to what munchins have been doing this year is beyond me!?

I have a feeling Pbc will win.You usually only get one chance to beat them and Glenstal blew that chanc last week.

Have Glenstal always been strong in Munster ?

think it is a small school similar to Roscrea, further evidence of the rise of the boarding school in irish rugby

As far as I know they havent won any major competitions in recent years apart from the Limerick City Cup this year but they are getting a lot better. They are always in the mix for competitions and teams are starting to give them a lot more respect in recent years because they have come on an awful lot.

Theres only about 200 pupils in glenstal and while they are an A school, theyve never won a Senior Cup and have never made a final either.

most years if they win a game in the senior cup they are doing well.
they generally do better at junior cup level

I was at it.Great game.I thought Glenstal were going to win.Their defence was very good for the most part and even though their forwards were smaller they still kept PBC under control.Pbc scored a great try though.
